Rogue Male....

....the "Dadsnet" section seemed over laddish even to a desensitized soul like myself, so (despite being distinctly male) have stuck my head over this particular parapet!

I've four unruly urchins to myself since the lovely (if fearsome) Mrs F snuffed it two tears ago. I have been a regular of "Widowed" sites, these are now too miserable for my tastes. "Lone Parent" sites seem primarily to discuss the CSA and swapping council houses (not for me, either!) and sites for Dads are either bivouac-in-the-woods-bonding nonsense or for those who wear Superman outfits atop public buildings. Again, not me...

...it was suggested to me that this might be a more suitable place to air my nonsense on the lonely long evenings. Despite being ostensibly for Mums only I can't find anywhere else more suitable!

Is it suitable? Or can anyone direct me to a website for male widowed lone parents of four unruly primary boys?

(I have Googled this with predictable results...)

this is a perfectly good place to be, the whole sites fab, but this is a great place to start

susiecutiebananas · 25/05/2008 21:55

I think you have found the perfect place

full of all sorts this is. You could venture into the dads bit... there are a fair few on here. just be prepared for some heated discussions amongst the seemingly benign stuff... keep a hard hat hat handy by your side, and maintain you wonderful sense of humour so apparent in your first post.!

MN is a very big and sometimes scary place. The 'CHat' threads are often the best to get started in...but hey, don't listen to my advice!!

Welcome.

lou33 · 25/05/2008 21:57

welcome to mn

wrinklytum · 25/05/2008 21:57

Welcome,retired Goth (love the name!!)

Mumsnet is for Parents.

Happy mumsnetting (PS if you like music,as your name suggests, partially, there is a music section, and we have even been known to mention the Whitby Goth Weekend) LOL

4andnotout · 25/05/2008 21:57

Hi retiredgoth
Welcome to mumsnet

madamez · 25/05/2008 21:59

You'll love it here, matey. Not only are there plenty of other goths (active and retired) to be found ,but you can have conversations about schooling, chicken-keeping, bumsex and what to do if zombies happen,. Quite often all on the same thread. Welcome to MN, you'll never want to leave.

stickyj · 25/05/2008 22:00

Well, I just wanted to say that I'm not available (like I'd be ready for a new man anyway) but hello anyway. I don't think Dadsnet is really laddish ('cos they know we're watching them) but welcome anyway. Don't get too discouraged if ladies shoot you down. I've just posted on dadsnet about my dh. I am sorry about your Mrs F, it must be tough being a single Dad and having lads, do you have any female freinds to help, how old are your boys? Have you got help? You look like you're looking for chats, not help for cash/ex-wife bashing etc. TBH you would fit in perfectly on MNet when we need a male opinion (but don't necessarily want to agree with them). Welcome anyway

Yurtgirl · 25/05/2008 22:02

Hello retiredgoth - welcome to MN

retiredgoth · 25/05/2008 22:08

.....ok. So I look for the "Chat" section, and stick my nose into "Music" too...

Though there will be no-one else sad enough to be waiting until midnight to attempt to download the new Wedding Present album from iTunes that is due out on the 26th...

Perhaps I should have chosen "GreyingGeek" as my username thingy....

Thanks for the replies and suggestions!

susiecutiebananas · 25/05/2008 22:20

hey, you never know retiredgoth there might just be someone as sad keen as you wanting to do that...

Oh, also, you can change your name too if you want- as often as you like, only people will start to get to 'know' you by your name so do it soon if you are going to

ChasingSquirrels · 25/05/2008 22:21

welcome to mumsnet, just stick your head over the parapet and dive in!

fymandbean · 25/05/2008 22:25

do you know I think there is always somone on Mumsnet to chat to so just post away

It wouldn't surprise me if there were obscure music fans as well....I found people happy to name my chickens (bought for FIL as a prezzie) and to answer umpteen other wierd and wonderful questions....

MrsWeasley · 25/05/2008 22:25

welcome to the sometimes crazy world of MN.

Word of warning once you post you will be drawn here at all hours! And to discuss everything and anything.

Its a lovely place.

Oh don't tell cod she can't spell, she can she just can't type.

madmuggle · 26/05/2008 10:39

Although if you do wish to say she can't spell we reserve the right to sit and giggle on the sidelines

Welcome

Saturn74 · 26/05/2008 10:42

Welcome to MN, retiredgoth.
This is definitely the place for airing nonsense!

madmuggle · 26/05/2008 10:45

Are just allowed to air the nonsense, or can we wash it and dry it too? Make a right old launderette of it?

Okay, I need more caffeine! Help

Mummy2TandF · 26/05/2008 11:04

retiredgoth - Welcome!! You have joined the dark side ... now I wonder if you can guess who I am? LOL
In fact I know that you "know" two of us on here - MN is a great place and has provided invaluable support and laughs for me, I hope you enjoy it

Stick your nose wherever you like and if someone tells you to go away and take your maleness elsewhere, tell them to piss off.

This site is always being accused of clique behavior, and it's true, so elbow your way into a nice comfy clique as soon as possible and stay there.

Freckle · 26/05/2008 11:16

And there are quite a few of us on here with boys only, so lots of support/sympathy/A&E tales to share.

ANTagony · 26/05/2008 20:12

I've registered with Gingerbread - it tells me it'll take over 28 days for the pack to come through, but its meant to be another good outlet for airing nonsence, rationalising single issues and sharing responsibility for the odd hour or two. Boys should be unruly and allowed to express themselves they have so much energy to burn off.

Tinkerbel6 · 27/05/2008 11:30

cooooeeeeee retired goth waves

how are you finding half term with your boys and the rubbish weather ?

InigoMontoya · 27/05/2008 11:38

Hello RG.

I'm afraid the worst of the laddishness is probably from women!

Lots of good dads on here though, good mums too, good eggs generally.

Kewcumber · 27/05/2008 11:42

yup as others have said this is as good a place as any. Most of the regular dads don't limit their posting to Dadsnet and I strongly suspect that the laddish tone is a deliebrate attempt to wind up us retiring flowers , so don't pay too much attention to it.

You might find local threads helpful or look in the general meet-up section to get to know people locally. SOme areas are more active than others.

fluffyanimal · 27/05/2008 11:42

My dh would probably be geeky enough to stay up till midnight to download the new Wedding Present album, except that he'd fall asleep due to parenting exhaustion before then! And he's not on MN to discuss it with you. But hey. Welcome!
