I've just had a letter to say they have over paid me by £2830!! I don't know why!
But just finished a contract and now claiming JSA I can't survive without child tax allowance and they want me to repay by June. Can anyone advise me what to do?

Update.. for some reason they thought I was earning £8k more than I am!!?so now back into payment. Said to go to citizen advice to do a income and outgoing form to arrange repayments. Couldn't/wouldn't explain how an overpayment though. I will phone back with figures and push them on how they get that figure. Thanks agaSmile

Has your company been bought over/gone through a merger process?

Mine did, and Hmrc. They somehow added my annual salary from my “new” employer to 4 months of salary from my “old” employer prior to our merge date.

The didn’t ask me for money back, but they pretty much cut my TC’s to practically nothing for weeks while they confirmed details with my employer. I had to cancel a planned trip to London with my DS because of it all, as I could no longer afford it on top of my childcare costs that I wasn’t getting much help with. I lost a lot on the trip because I had bought various attraction tickets, train tickets, etc.

They were a bloody nightmare to deal with. They made me feel like an absolute parasite for needing to claim TC’s.

I still receive a small amount from them, but I’m so glad my days of relying heavily on them are over.

No PAYE so no reason to have been over paid I thought.. clearly they are making it up as they go!! But it's us that have the onus to prove otherwise. For many it's an essential income. I wonder if people who have fiddled their tax are left in such poverty while it's looked into?!
