I am just about to take my 5 year old to a restaurant for the evening, just the two of us. I am really excited we both enjoy it so much. I never really see other parents alone with young children at this time, is it something people don't do?

I often do it at lunch, if we go into London for the day, or a shopping mall, and have done it for supper when I ahd builders in and couldn't face the kitchen!!

It si lovely, and dd is getting used to it and loves it and is quite well behaved!!

prettycandles · 14/07/2004 14:51

I've done it at lunchtime, very often. Most of the time the children behave better than at home!

A few times I've phoned dh on his way home from work and told him to meet us at a cafe for supper, because the children/I/all three of us are going round the bend and have to get out of the house NOW! He doesn't like the expense of me eating out with the children at lunchtime, but if it's either spend money and get indigestion or come home to a screaming banshee - oddly enough he never quibbles that.

i did it! i have taken th kids for lunch when out shopping etc before but never out for a meal in the evening. But after reading this thread me, and my dd and ds went out for a curry last night and it was lovely. it really gave me confidence in my new role as a single parent. we had time to sit and have a chat rather than it mainly being the grown ups talking, and we got very spoilt by all the staff!

Blackduck · 15/07/2004 10:02

Dp and I took ds for a curry last night (well he had the nan, starters etc.) He loved it, and we got to have the main in peace as he went to sleep...also you can blame the mess on the table on your 14 month old.....I think next time I'm away dp might slope up there with ds - our local are wonderful...take kids in their stride

My ds and I go out to eat - it used to be Pizza Hut mainly (McDs on a Sat when he is meeting his dad), but took him to Pizza Express 2 weeks ago.

He sat there when he'd eaten his meal and said very seriously "Mummy, this is the BEST day of my life". I don't know where that came from, (and God knows it's not true!) but I think he was just overly impressed to have a glass with his lemonade in, rather than a plastic cup (very grown up) and we had a good old chat too. Extremely enjoyable and we were in there for about 1.5 hours!

Definitely agree that it should be cheaper across the board (or the table) but was very impressed with the "Piccolo Pack" for children - it kept us busy for ages!

I sometimes take dd aged nearly 2 out for dinner if dh is working late

yes ds and i 'go out' in the evening sometimes. it's lovely cos you can give them your undivided attention.

hope you have a lovely time

mummytosteven · 18/07/2004 20:50

Yes - I do that if DH is working late/out on the ale or if I'm feeling too lazy/frazzled to make myself some healthy lunch (tho restaurant in this instance is usually McDonalds/Burger King . Have a great meal. Where you off to?

hana · 18/07/2004 21:02

I've done this too, more so when DH is away or working really late. There's a great pizza place on the highstreet. I love it and so does dd - a real treat for us (though dh does get really jealous!!)

Fizog · 18/07/2004 21:21

I take dd (2) out to restaurants all the time. We both love it, it gives me a break and she thinks sitting in a restaurant behaving eating different sorts of food is absolutely normal.

Great all round... just wish it was cheaper!!

littlemissbossy · 18/07/2004 21:22

Yes, I've done this loads of times. Hope you have a good night

noddy5 · 18/07/2004 21:23

I love it too if it were cheaper I'd do it more.I think it has taught my ds how to behave in a restaurant ,in fact he's better there than at home

juniper68 · 18/07/2004 21:25

hope you enjoy your night

mummytosteven · 18/07/2004 21:25

yeah, the only problem is affording it - now starting to look for which of BK/McD's has a 99p burger offer

posyhairdresser · 18/07/2004 21:49

I take my 4.5 yr old out for lunch to a variety of restaurants, from cheap to expensive, once or twice a week and it's great!

In the evenings we would normally only go with dp - hadn't really thought to do this time with just the 2 of us!

Have a great time!

aloha · 18/07/2004 22:16

I've done it with ds at Cafe Rouge, and often see one parent with a child at Pizza Express. I think it's a lovely, special thing to do.

I do it a fair bit with my two, as does dp when I am not around. Think it depends where you go whether you'll see others with kids - Puzza Express is one of my kids favourites and there are always loads of parents (single and couples) in there with their children.
Hope you have a really lovely time.

mummytosteven · 18/07/2004 22:28

BTW - DS is 4 months old and not on solids yet - I'm not feeding him hamburgers, honest .

fairyfly · 18/07/2004 22:53

That was great, i have fallen in love with my date. Also never does he eat so much, and it was all vegetarian, wanted to go to the pub afterwards but felt i was taking things a little to far.

yes sometimes, to pizza express, it's lovely

Hulababy · 18/07/2004 22:55

Me and my 2yo DD often go out to cafes and restaurants for lunchtime on our own. I really enjoy it. The way she chatters away to me non-stop makes me laugh - she is like a little old lady sometimes

mummytosteven · 18/07/2004 22:58

and your date not drinking wine always helps keep the bill down
