London

Lunch, a mooch and a museum

My ideal way of visiting London is to do it in half day ‘chunks’ by choosing an area, having a wander and having lunch, afternoon tea or coffee and cake (or a pint). Extra points for a museum, a beautiful church, a graveyard or anything literary, historical or geeky.

On our next trip, we’ll have 4 ‘chunks’ to fill.

I’ve booked Trishna in Marylebone for lunch on one of the days, so we can go to the Wallace Collection and the park and Daynt books. Has anyone been to Trishna? Anything else nearby that I might not know about?

Any ideas for other ‘chunks’ including restaurants, cafes or pubs much appreciated.

Done Fortnums a few times now. Must admit I can’t get so excited about the teeny tiny macaroon place. Is it really nice?

I like it but it is quite small so always a risk that there isn't a table. I've not been for tea there (but love going for a posh cocktail experience) but The Goring near Victoria is lovely and has two rooms for afternoon tea. Or for a tea with a view either the OXO Tower or the Shard.

The Goring, Browns and another that I’ve currently forgotten but might be the Langham, are in my possibilities list.

DP would want (to misquote Courtney Love) the one with the most cake.

I love The Goring - really beautiful old school style - I always feel like I'm in an Agatha Christie movie

Slight change of plan. We’re going to stay in Marylebone instead of Greenwich, so could use some pub recommendations!

The Courtald is going to be our option for our last morning, if we can’t secure tickets for the Bowie at V&A East.

The Jackalope on Weymouth Mews is great and off the beaten track a bit

Any further ideas for something to do and/or eat in combination with Brompton Cemetery - either in the same sort of area or an easy tube or bus away? We've done a historical Chelsea walk before, which was lovely - so many blue plaques! Nothing I fancy at the Saatchi gallery. I've looked at maps so much that my brain has stopped being able to understand them!!!

Not the Kensington museums or Hyde park, which we've done loads of times.

An afternoon ‘chunk’ last week was a gorgeous diagonal walk across Hyde Park (stopping at the Serpentine for refreshment) and then an hour in the Moco museum at Marble Arch.

Depending on when you are there the historical instrument museum inside the Royal COllege of Music, If you're there on a Friday lunchtime there's a free concert as well. Also a nice pub in the mews around the corner The Queens Arms or a rather atmospheric bar at The Gore.

Thank you - will look at the Gore and the pub. It will be a Monday and I'm a barbarian when it comes to music anyway, tbh!
