Lunch, a mooch and a museum

My ideal way of visiting London is to do it in half day ‘chunks’ by choosing an area, having a wander and having lunch, afternoon tea or coffee and cake (or a pint). Extra points for a museum, a beautiful church, a graveyard or anything literary, historical or geeky.

On our next trip, we’ll have 4 ‘chunks’ to fill.

I’ve booked Trishna in Marylebone for lunch on one of the days, so we can go to the Wallace Collection and the park and Daynt books. Has anyone been to Trishna? Anything else nearby that I might not know about?

Any ideas for other ‘chunks’ including restaurants, cafes or pubs much appreciated.

Then I'd suggest Southwark Cathedral for coffee, walk to Bermondsey High Street to take in the new Cosprop exhibition at the Fashion Museum and then lunch in one of the restaurants around Borough market (Padella?) THere is also the Crossbones graveyard in Bermondsey.

The Cosprop exhibition has had good reviews - has costumes from Emma, Pridge & Prejudice, Room with a view, Mrs Harris went to Paris etc.

The exhibition sounds very much up my street - now, how to persuade dp?

Looks lovely, but only open on Sundays at the moment, it seems..

That's a shame. Must be winter hours. We went on a weekday earlier this year.

The website says they're doing renovation work.

Ah. I suppose 500-600 year old houses do take a bit of upkeep!

certainlycertain · 28/09/2025 15:18

This is a fun museum
https://museumofthehome.org.uk

I'd recommend that, followed by a wander through east London (Broadway Market is lovely) and lunch at

But skip pudding and go down the street

Home - Museum of the Home

We are the only Museum of the Home in the world, revealing and rethinking the ways we live in order to live better together.

He could do the Belfast or the Tower mechanism museum while you do Cosprop?

Ooh I really like the Museum of the Home and haven't been for ages.

Unfortunately Sune is out, because I can't go anywhere that only publishes sample menus and has very limited veggie options. I'm fussy and need to plan ahead to make sure there will actually be something I can eat.

For your Marylebone day, if you decide against Trishna then there is a lovely French restaurant opposite it - Josephine’s. Brasserie style and sort of place you sink into a banquette. However I have seen you are vegetarian so you’ll want to check the menu first.

I recommend you walk down Marylebone Lane which starts at the end of Blandford St (Trishba st). Lots of nice shops and cafes. At the end you have two of my favourites - VV Rouleaux (ribbons and buttons and lots of little bits and pieces) and Paul Rothe which is the most amazing little deli and traditional old school caff. The best French mustard there!

AuntieDolly · 28/09/2025 16:55

Brunel Museum? Barbican architecture tour?

I'm not pushing you to go somewhere you're not comfortable, but just to say, I'm also a veggie and have never had a problem eating very well at Sune. I had a nettle risotto there in the spring that I still think about

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2025 17:02

@kittybloom A ribbon shop sounds right up my street!

@certainlycertain I can well believe that the food was delicious and I could maybe turn up and love it. The danger with places like that though, is that if there's only one veggie dish available on the day and if it turns out to be tomatoes or aubergine, as is so often the case, I'm screwed!

Brunel Museum? Barbican architecture tour?

I've done and loved the Barbican tour, but not yet done the Brunel museum. We have, however, done a riverside Rotherhithe walk and had lunch at the Mayflower, which I really enjoyed.

Opposite Southwark Cathedral, outside of the Borough Market crowds, is Mallow, a really lovely vegan restaurant. In case you do decide to do that area.

That's a pity. We went there a few years ago on a weekday (very possibly a Monday) and had the incredible good luck to be there just as a party was about to be taken underground, by prior arrangement. As we were the only other people there at that point, the guide (probably someone extremely senior and knowledgeable in the museum management) asked if we could tag along. The other party were amenable to this and we were delighted. What a pair of geniuses Marc and Isambard were.

Wow! I'd love to see the underground bit. It looks incredible in pictures.

Presumably you've done the globe and a boat trip?

One of my favourite mooches is Richmond. Lovely shops, beautiful pearl with great cafes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2025 18:43

Done the boat trips but might well do it again. Amazingly, not yet done the Globe but I'm heartily sick of the crowds along the South Bank, so will probably save it for a winter trip!

If you’re nearby St Marylebone church is worth a look and often has lunchtime recitals.
The Lisson galleries in Lisson St and Bell St are small but great if you like modern art.

Here4the · 28/09/2025 18:53

The globe is fairly ok on a week day. I'd recommend doing the Greenwich Observatory too or one of the other places along the river that way.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2025 18:13

Thanks for these.

I can’t remember if I’ve been in the church in Marylebone or not, so will definitely check it out. I’m only interested in their architecture, rather than the religion or the music tbh!

The John Soanes Museum and a lovely walk to St Paul’s.

Get the boat to Tate Britain and eat in their cafe.

Foundling Museum is sweet. And V&A is amazing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2025 18:48

Done most of these before but thank you. We haven’t been to the Foundling museum so that could be a possibility, as it’s an excuse to go to Gay’s the Word (excellent bookshop in Bloomsbury).

Any recommendations for a light lunch around there?
