Special restaurant in London for a 40th present

I'm so out of the loop with good restaurants in London these days so hoping you can help!

As a joint 40th present, I'd like to treat my brother and sister in law to dinner somewhere (just the two of them, not with me), to a nice meal somewhere special but thats fun or a bit quirky as opposed to just being posh

Looking to spend around £300 inc booze (and they like a drink!)

Central or south west London would be ideal

Or I could do dinner and a night in a hotel and pay a bit more

Any particular type of food they prefer?

(or hate?)

Spottytop1 · 16/08/2017 21:32

The M restaurant is amazing - if you like steak

Charitygirl1 · 16/08/2017 21:32

I think Bocca di Lupo is particularly delicious, buzzy and special. What a lovely present.

Garlicansapphire · 16/08/2017 21:40

Difficult to suggest given I don't know what kinds of food they like. I really like the Wolseley, Yauatcha, Roka.

Maybe the list here will help you get a feel for some of the best options.

Give us an idea of the type of food and I can come up with some suggestions.

MrsWobble3 · 16/08/2017 21:45

If they are adventurous foodies then Archipelago might be worth a look. It's certainly quirky.

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 16/08/2017 21:57

ottolenghi. very special and different.

user1473602935 · 16/08/2017 22:12

Thanks everyone - some great options here. They like all types of food to be honest!

Sexy Fish
Oblix at the Shard
Social Eating House
La Gavroche ( I prefer lunch over dinner there though)

FreedaDonkey · 16/08/2017 22:15

The people recommending places, can you say why they are good please? I'm getting ideas too!

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 16/08/2017 22:16

Ottonlenghi is just a cafe!

Ginfiend · 16/08/2017 22:19

duck & waffle

reluctantlondoner · 16/08/2017 22:23

The Frog!!! There's a new branch opening in Covent Garden very soon. The original one in Shoreditch is very cool, quirky and amazing food!

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 17/08/2017 01:00

Ottolenghi is certainly not just a cafe. I have been twice to the restaurant off Regent Street. Once for my 50th and then for my mothers 80th. It is a an extraordinary explosion of taste. Influenced heavily from Mediterranean ingredients and cooking. A lot of vegetarian choice. We all enjoyed the food enormously. Yes it is expensive but truly worth every bite. I cannot wait to go back. The foodie friends I took for my 50th have been back several times.

I love Dinner by Heston. You should just about squeak under for 300 quid but you wouldn't be able to go mad on the booze.

Tartyflette · 17/08/2017 01:19

This place is considered to be very good but bonkers quirky.

If you like meat the Hawksmoor small chain serves excellent steak, serious cocktails and homemade Rolos (BIG) for dessert. When we ate their on our anniversary they piped a message in chocolate on the plate. Cheesy but sweet.

For good food but not too much cheffy wankery The Greenhouse is a serious reataurant.
NB none of these are cheap!!

Tartyflette · 17/08/2017 01:31

Alyn Williams at the Westbury. (Mayfair) Michelin starred, ate there in February and was impressed.
Alain Ducasse at the Dorch does a good value set lunch. * Michelin
Hélène Darroze at the Connaught. ££££ but superb.

Tartyflette · 17/08/2017 01:39

Yes, I love Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental too, I took my friend there to celebrate a special birthday and she loved it. We even had a tour of one of the kitchens and were shown how they make the celebrated 'meat fruit' , which is delicious, by the way.
I was also very impressed by the hotel bar, where we met before lunch, I ordered drinks , and the manager remembered my name when we came back to the bar for more drinks after our meal..... It was "welcome back Mrs Tartyflette, same again for you, ladies? "
I do like a bit of fawning

NewPantsforaNewYear · 17/08/2017 02:46

Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden and ask for a table in the conservatory.

Modestine · 17/08/2017 03:11

They do fawning at Sketch...very flattering.

Ropsleybunny · 17/08/2017 03:16

Le Gavroche is my favourite restaurant ever!

BigGreenOlives · 17/08/2017 03:22

Childmaintenanceserviceinquiry. You are thinking of NOPI rather than Ottolenghi. Still run by Yotam but a proper restaurant rather than the Ottolenghi cafes.

I think Yauatcha Soho is too noisy & busy for a romantic dinner, I think the City branch would be better but might be too quiet for them,

What are they like personality wise? Do they primarily want good food or a cool environment?

avamiah · 17/08/2017 03:24

I love Hakassan in Mayfair, but you have to love Chinese food. This restaurant in my opinion has it all.Amazing food, great vegetarian options, amazing service and very child friendly.Oh the toilets are absolutely immaculate and for me that says a lot especially in a very busy restaurant in London .
