Anyone go camping locally?

We have just bought a tent. argh

We're starting to look for places to go - just the odd weekend, and nothing too far ar the moment - thinking loch lomond/stirling/north berwick/ayrshire.

Just wondered if anyone else went camping, and fancied a wee meet-up?

Dh, ds (3) and I.

Wild camping or campsite wih showers etc?

www.beinglascampsite.co.uk/ is in an amazing location - have never stayed there but launched canoes from there. Is at North end of Loch Lomond near to the Falls of Falloch. Might be midgey though?

North Berwick might be a better bet midge wise - east coast is better that way...

Sorry couldn't be of more help

try the walled garden near maybole, geordie, very cute and safe for kids. and croy beach nearby so lovely for days out. will keep you posted when we're next heading out...

geordieminx · 15/06/2010 15:08

Have heard good reports of Walled Garden thanks Aitch - also

Heads of Ayr
Blair Athol
Culzean Casltle
Braemar
Brighouse Brae

Just looking for wee places that we can get to after work of a Friday, or first thing Sat morning, to get used to pitching tent, get to grips with everything

Be aware that the rangers may not be overly keen for you to pitch a tent on the manicured lawns of the walled garden , plenty of other places there though.

Aitch · 15/06/2010 18:08

no, there are no rangers, just the owner, who is very keen indeed for you to pitch on his land. he's a lovely guy, it's a good place for that first trip i think, cos there are caravanning seniors who are DESPERATE to get away from their wives and pitch a tent again...

Aitch · 15/06/2010 18:09

(we used to stag at brighouse bay when i was a kid, it was great. am i right in thinking it's gone a bit holiday park since then, though?)

Aitch · 15/06/2010 18:09

stay

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/06/2010 18:21

sorry aitch - I completely misread your earlier post and thought your walled garden was somewhere completely different must get more sleep

Aitch · 15/06/2010 18:25

lol.

geordieminx · 15/06/2010 20:32

Thanks for all of your help

Oh and would you believe I only managed to make it to Waitrose for the first time last week. I wandered round the whole place like this . So many yummy things - 5 different flavours of croutons - 5 I tell you!!

Cashel Bay on Loch Lomond is lovely as is Ardgartan on Loch Long at Arrochar but the midgies are pretty bad at both.

We were going to try the campsite at Culzean Castle in Ayrshire next weekend if the weather forecast is good but may have to try this walled garden instead. Sounds lovely. Maybe see you guys there if you decided to venture out....

geordieminx · 20/06/2010 18:42

We are just back from Heads of Ayr camping park - it was fab - lovely kids park, realy clean, good facilities. Would really recommend it. The weather has been amazing!

OP posts:

is it a bit entertainment-tastic or quite relaxed?

geordieminx · 21/06/2010 18:55

No no, dead relaxed. A wee lounge type place with a bar (I think - we didnt go in), a play park, showers and a laundry room and that was it.

It was soooo peaceful.

There is a haven site (Craig Tara I think) about a mile further into Ayr.

Showers/toilets were immaculate.

and how were the sandflies at the beach? sometimes they're a pita at croy.

geordieminx · 22/06/2010 11:37

Tbh we didnt go to the beach. We went to Heads of Ayr farm (good but ££ and lots of stuff once you in that are extra), went into Ayr, had a drive along electric brae, and found a lovely wee pub with a lovely park inside it.

are these places wild camping or sites?
i'm looking for some wild camp spots that are accesible by public transport- if anyone knows of any i would be extremely grateful.

trying to fill up the summer holidays, we went to rowerdennen last year but needed a lift to get up there. i like the idea of knowing of a good place to go and just spontaneously heading there

runnervt · 22/06/2010 22:04

We recently stayed at Witches Craig earlier in the year. It's just outside Stirling (near the Wallace Monument). It was very friendly and I would go back for a wee weekend trip.

Aitch · 22/06/2010 22:08

KIRMCC will you GET ON my gaidhlig mum thread please? and can you think of anyone i could borrow a p1 blazer from?

Aitch · 22/06/2010 22:09

btw awakenings, walled garden

i can't think of anywhere that's next to a train station, tbh, but you could deffo get a cab to heads of ayr i think.

I'd really like to go camping with the wee one but wouldn't fancy going on my own so if anyone is interested in trying it out for just one night, the Walled Garden Highland games event at the beginning of August sounds fun if anyone fancies going along and camping for the night (assuming its not pouring down!!!)

geordieminx · 26/06/2010 20:24

You could come with us Red!

How old is dd now?
