Hi All

I have just moved to the area and am looking for people to meet and chat/have coffee with whilst the kids go loony

Is anyone around this area?

I have a 3 and 4 year old and one on the way. Happy to meet up at parks/cafes/house etc.

Would ideally love to get a group of us together to regularly meet up?

Hi there,

Setting up a gropu sounds lovely. Shall we start the ball rolling? I'm a mum-to-be so still working full time right now, but happy to help get this off the ground. Keen to speak to mums with experience - good and bad!

I'm also looking after the local pages so will be updating the "what's on" pages here - hopefully this will quickly grow

thisisnotwhoyouthink · 08/04/2010 12:35

Wow! There ARE people in this town Where abouts are you?

I have just moved here so have met hardly anyone! Unfortunately it also means that I dont know where anything is, but I am happy to explore - you will have to recommend places to me!

When are you due? When do you start mat leave?

It will be nice to have someone with kids the same age as my soon to be little one. Especially once I can pack the older two off to school and we can just relax with the newborns! What hospital are you going to?

mrsdelany · 22/05/2010 20:55

Hi auburnlizzy 78,

I'm early September and live v near. Shall we get a date in?

JennyC · 25/05/2010 20:08

Hi, We currently live in London, but are thinking of moving to Letchworth. DD (age 10) might be going to St. Chris next year.
Was hoping someone could give me some thoughts on what it's like to live out there, because I'm kind of panicking at the thought of leaving London!
Many thanks.

auburnlizzy78 · 28/05/2010 18:50

Sounds good mrsdelany. I've got a couple of days off 7th and 8th June if you can do weekdays. If not, the next couple of saturdays are ok too - could meet in a coffee shop in Letchworth if you like? Don't know how this works, but if you're up for it I guess we contact each other via the "contact poster" button???

auburnlizzy78 · 28/05/2010 19:04

JennyC, I'm from South London originally myself, moved up here in 2005 to be near husband's family and pretty happy here.

Good points (personal opinion only!)
Some decent schools if you move to the Lordship area, or Willian/the south side of Hitchin, especially the primaries. Secondaries ok, pretty much in keeping with what you'd expect from the Shires! Depends though on what you're used to in your area of London (have a look at the Ofsted website) and what you think of as a "good" school.

Feels safe, pleasant enough

Nice housing stock, some pretty fancy stuff especially to the south. Unaffordable to most but nice to gawp at

Close to supermarkets (Morrison's, Sainsbury's). Massive Tesco in nearby Baldock.

It's an ok commute into London too (expensive tho). Get a fast train and you'll be in London in half an hour.

Nice, non-chain cinema

Bad points:

I find the lack of decent shops in a town of 30,000 people depressing, but I grew up with access to Croydon and Kingston etc. I think they are starting to redevelop though.

Town centre dead at night, you're not going to find many (any??) decent restaurants (go to Hitchin though, which is much better. Or even Baldock)

Can't really comment on things to do with kids though, am expecting my first one so am kind of ignorant. Hope someone else can fill in the gaps for you. If you've got any specific questions please just ask tho, happy to try and help!

JennyC · 29/05/2010 19:08

Thanks auburnlizzy! I spent the morning up there on Wednesday. Wandered around, had a coffee. Seemed extremely quiet, and the lack of shops was a bit alarming. I think I liked it though. It surprised me that there were no bookstores other than W. H. Smith.

twittergirl · 30/05/2010 00:00

JennyC - I also currently live in London and am thinking of moving to Hitchin or Baldock. We have been to have a look and I was a bit taken aback by how quiet they both were and how few shops they have (especially Baldock!).

On the plus side though we will finally be able to get a decent-sized house for a decent price - something that's impossible in London! Also the schools in both of those towns seem to be very good.

auburnlizzy78 · 30/05/2010 19:39

Think it's best to treat the three towns as one. Between them they've got everything you need.

The nearest big (as in approaching London standards) shopping centre is at Milton Keynes - 30mins or so away by car. Massive Ikea there too if that's your thing. Also Luton has a big shopping mall with all the major names (it's called the Arndale) but I try to avoid Luton unless desperate!

We live to the north of the Letchworth and the schools are def not as good (based on online Ofsted reports) - we will probably end up moving to try and get into the catchment area for the better ones. Or to Hitchin (as I've said above).

JennyC - DH says that there is a large bookstore called David's in Letchworth, and adds that there is a Waterstones in Hitchin on the Market Square.

JennyC · 04/06/2010 22:02

Yes! I've been told about David's, thanks!
I think it's beautiful out there, but it is such a huge, huge change. Twittergirl, I think Baldock looks charming, and so does Hitchin.

Treeesa · 10/06/2010 10:58

Missed this before but JennyC - if you are coming up to Baldock to take a look then make sure you come the weekend after this one (June 19th). There is an Italian market over this weekend so it's more of a busier weekend to come up and have a look.

JennyC · 12/06/2010 22:08

Thanks Treesa.
DH works in the City, and is stressing about what his commute would be like from Letchworth. I think he could get train from Letch to Stevenage and then a faster train to Moorgate?
DD will be going to St. Christopher, so I don't want to be too far from there.
Who knows where we'll end up...

FortunateHamster · 14/06/2010 17:02

Hi all,

I moved to Letchworth a few months ago and would love to get to know other people nearby. I'm due to give birth to my first in a week (but knowing me I'll go over). Lived and worked in Hertford before so it's not too big of a difference though I do miss the restaurants. Wonder if the building work in Letchworth will make new ones move in?

Treeesa · 14/06/2010 21:44

JennyC - assume you mean St Christophers in Letchworth. Has a great reputation btw..

The direct train to Kings Cross should be fine in the mornings.. DH usually goes from Letchworth though has been using Baldock more recently due to some parking issues. Both are on the same line and he usually gets in for just after 8am into Kings Cross. Journey is only 40 minutes.. Does yours need to travel to Moorgate then? If he changes at Stevenage I still think he'd be going into Kings Cross and it's still a 10 minute plus 25 minute journey plus the time between connections and the time from KX to Moorgate..

JennyC · 14/06/2010 23:03

I thought there was somehow a train to Moorgate? I dunno, I'll let him worry about it!
Glad to hear St. Chris has a good reputation. I have a good feeling about it, but one never knows...
How old are your kids?

Hi all

JennyC - I get the 6.39am from Letchworth in the mornings. That stops at Finsbury Park at about 7.05 - loads of people get off and cross the platform to get on the train to Moorgate. So the whole journey is easily do-able inside an hour. Coming back, I don't know what trains there are. It may be more convenient if your husband braves the Northern line to and from Kings Cross. I do that every day to and from Bank. The train takes about 8 mins from Moorgate (god, can you tell I do this journey a lot?!!)

Would love to meet up with any of you, poss easiest when I'm on mat leave from mid August - free every day then!

JennyC · 15/06/2010 20:31

Thanks so much for all your help, Peppa and Lizzy!
I agree that the lack of restaurants in L'worth is odd--it has a sort of abandoned feeling in places. There seems to be a lot going on in terms of clubs (interest, not night)and adult education classes and lectures.
Auburnlizzy, when you say the train is about 8 min. from Moorgate, do you mean the tube from Moorgate to Kings Cross?
DD has a taster day at St. Chris tomorrow, so I'll be up there nosing around!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 15/06/2010 20:38

Hope you don't mind me sticking my beak in - I spent my teenage years in Letchworth and my parents still live there. I usually take the DC to stay for a week in the summer and luxuriate in their massive garden. I'm afraid that as a teenager I didn't really appreciate the quiet leafiness of the place. Went to school in Hitchin.

My dad and brother used to commute to London and there is a non-stop train to Kings X which only takes about 35 mins.

auburnlizzy78 · 17/06/2010 19:08

JennyC - yes, I did mean the tube - northern line - takes roughly 8 mins to go between KC and Moorgate. There are other lines that do the same journey (hammersmith and city, circle, metropolitan) but I think they are slightly less frequent/reliable. (I know this makes me sound like a trainspotter, I am actually quite normal in real life)!

I don't know what it would do to commuting costs though to add on a tube journey every day, rather than sticking to the overground train to Moorgate....?

What did you make of St Chris's?

RhinestoneCowgirl - you're right, my husband said the same (he grew up in Ickleford) - everyone went to Hitchin as Letchworth was pretty much dead!

JennyC · 20/06/2010 20:46

I really like St. Chris's. The schools in N. London are so hideously competitive and uptight, it seemed refreshingly normal. Our neighbor's daughter goes there and they have been happy with it, although the dad does feel it's a bit "sex, drugs & rock n' roll" (his words), but we're going to take a deep breath and go for it.

Thanks for all the info on trains! It's immensely helpful. Funny you mention trainspotting, I was googling train info, and found a website written by a lesbian trainspotter...
