We are taking some friends out to dinner to say thanks for some help we have had from them. Our DS (2.6) will be with us so we want somewhere nice atmosphere, great food but child friendly. Budget is pretty healthy though not extravagant! Also we are veggie so it cant be just meat meat meat! Any ideas?? Thanks!

The Blue Strawberry in Hatfield Peveral is very good and very accomodating of children.

Also The Compasses in Pattiswick.

Mung · 04/02/2009 13:54

The Crown in Stoke by Nayland and the Anchor in Nayland are both nice places to eat and I am pretty sure they would accommodate children...might be worth giving them a ring first.

I would definitely warn you AGAINST The Barn in Great Tey, not child friendly and appalling service.

Mung · 04/02/2009 13:55

Whilst we are on the subject of restaurants...

I am looking for a nice place to go with DH for our wedding anniversary. I will probably opt for the Crown, but if anyone can suggest anything better then I am interested to hear it.

MadameCastafiore · 04/02/2009 13:56

There is a nice one in Coggeshall called Baumanns - not cheap but if you want them I have some Times Eat out for £5 vouchers that cover there that make it really affordable.

Mung · 04/02/2009 13:57

I had seen their web site once before...have you ever been Madame? I'll check out their veggie options on line and if it looks good, I might take you up on the vouchers.

MadameCastafiore · 04/02/2009 14:00

OK that fine with me - let me know and I will drop them round - I have millions of the bloody things!

JentlyDoesIt · 04/02/2009 14:44

Hiya,

Bit of a drive out but the Dolphin at Stisted (on the way to Braintree) is excellent. Really child friendly, from high chairs, to kids menu's and also "proper" kids cutlery.

Prices are good and the food is really nice. There are veggie options too.

It's run by the old bar manager from the Shepherd and Dog from Langham (back in the days when it was a brill pub) and another chap who used to work there.

hereidrawtheline · 04/02/2009 14:48

I meant to say, this is eeny. (remember me? eenybeeny in Coggeshall)

I changed names a while ago. DS has been diagnosed with special needs, he has aspergers so I really only now post on the SN boards. MN politics got a bit too much for me tbh. But I wanted to say hi to you lovely Colchester ladies! Hope you are all well. And thanks for the suggestions!

I went here a while back with DCs and it was really good. Food was great and they catered well for the children.

Glad you are OK hereidrawtheline hope DS is good.

Mung · 04/02/2009 16:01

Just had the Swan in Chappelrecommended too

Mung · 04/02/2009 21:55

Just been told that The Blue Strawberry has opened a sister restaurant in Boreham called the Lion that is meant to be quite nice. They seem to cater for childen quite well.

hereidrawtheline · 04/02/2009 23:06

thanks very much for the links Mung and the suggestions everyone! I have a lot to choose from!

DS is good his DX is very confusing right now there seems to be some disagreement between professionals and my brain literally hurts!

Has anyone been to the Crown in Nayland recently? I went a couple of months ago and it's under new management (the people who used to run the Angel) and its significantly poncier than it used to be - didn't find it child friendly at all! We ended up going to the Angel and that was lovely but we only went for a bar meal so couldn't comment on the restaurant.

Hall Farm in Stratford is fab!

Mung · 05/02/2009 15:09

I went to the Crown about 4 months ago and really liked it. It was an evening thing though and I wouldn't have dreamt taking children.

lucyfer2000 · 05/02/2009 21:06

Hi eeny!! I don't have any more suggestions for you but just wanted to say HI! sounds like you have had a lot going on of late. I hope you are keeping well. Take care xxx

Ooh - forgot to mention Milsoms at Dedham.

MadameCastafiore · 11/03/2009 14:06

The Angel in Kelvedon is nice.

Our running club has our social there and all us fit (ha ha) runners eat the yummy steak (with chips to die for) and drink copious amounts of red wine each month - well you got to have something to keep those legs going!

Having been to the Swan in Felstead I would say that it is on par as the swan is just like the Compasses.

TiggyR · 11/03/2009 14:15

I've often driven past the Angel at Kelvedon and wondered what it's like. And keep meaning to try the George and Dragon.

MadameCastafiore · 11/03/2009 14:17

George and Dragon is not at all child friendly though!

Mung · 11/03/2009 14:18

Thanks for all the info TiggyR. I have heard good things about the Angel in Kelvedon. The George and Dragon was pretty good, the woman that runs it is a little odd, but its comical to watch her in action.

TiggyR · 11/03/2009 15:40

Jyst noticed your bit about your wedding anniversary - obviously if you know the area you are familiar with the Milsoms chain? You could always push the boat out and go to Le Talbooth, or Maison Talbooth. I noticed the other day that the Crown has started doing 'romantic' bed and breakfasts!
