Any mums fancy meeting up in central Oxford for a coffee in the New Year?

I live outside Oxford with my dh/dcs, am in my 30s and would like to meet up with mums for the occasional chat/coffee in central Oxford either with or without dcs. Mine are currently at school & pre-school so have a certain flexibility.

Hi ran, I'm in central Oxford so count me in . I have a 1 year DS who isn't in nursery so he would have to come along - and I'm also expecting another on the 22nd Jan so things in the New Year may be a bit unpredictable!

rantothehills · 29/12/2008 10:08

Hi Loosey, you've got your hands rather full by the sounds of it! Where do you normally go with yr ds? We like the Covered market, Blackwell's cafe. Have you been in Ox long?

Happy new year! Hands not so full now but i bet they will be in a couple of weeks! You probably know what I'm letting myself in for...

I mainly tend to take ds to baby places when we're out in town together as he can get very bored stuck in the buggy - there are a couple in the town centre you probably know like Sparklers and Rainbow House. Otherwise I do go to other cafes when need a cake fix - I particularly like Quod due to loads of space for pram/highchairs and that they have given us free ice cream in the past!

We've been here about 3 years now and I really love it. It's a great place to be with babies/ toddlers as there is so much going on. You?

skidaddle · 07/01/2009 10:35

Hi,

I would love to meet up - moving to Oxford on 17th Jan although that might be cutting it a bit fine for you Loosey! I have 2 DCs: DD is 3 and DS is 1. Would love to find out about child-friendly cafes/toddler groups etc

rantothehills · 07/01/2009 10:53

hi both - Thursdays good for me, lunchtime or afternoon. Let me know if this would suit.

Loosey, don't know Sparklers but have walked past Rainbow House on my way to the shops or Nortons for a coffee, never been in though but looks good. One thing I'd like to try is Teapot Tinies music group at the theatre, have you ever been?

Skidaddle, check out

  • loads of stuff on, inc this kids' page, even got meditation for toddlers

Thanks ran, that link is fantastic. Thursdays are good for me.

Have just looked up the Rainbow Room and teapot tinies - seems like teapot tinies isn't on at the moment (although I might have searched wrong)? Would love to try it though, exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

The Rainbow room looks lovely. Shall we try there? Maybe have lunch?

Is anyone free on Thursday 22nd Jan?

rantothehills · 08/01/2009 08:37

Great. Youngest dc is at pre-sch on Thursdays as I go into Ox so would be child-free but is with me on Mon mornings. Not sure what RH has on each day. Could meet on 22nd though but would be just me.

ran - it would be nice for our DC to meet but I work on Mondays so shall we meet on Thurs?

Is anyone else coming? Thinking LooseyC might have had her baby!

Jazzicat?

Anyone else? Roll up roll up!

LooseyC · 08/01/2009 20:16

Hello - nothing happening so far here so got a feeling it may well be Feb when this baby turns up! Maybe best though if you guys make plans and I'll be there if I can.

Rainbow House is only open Wed-Fri and it's not exactly luxurious being in a church hall but good value and a nice place to have lunch without worrying about little terrors annoying people or getting bored as there are loads of toys.

Sparklers is my favourite group in town - it's in St Ebbs church hall (behind Sainsbury in the Westgate Centre) on Weds and costs £1 for which you get coffee, tea and I normally have about 3 slices of cake at the moment... Loads for babies and toddlers to do and really popular.

I went to a good little music class at the Playhouse in Oxford on Monday mornings - is that the one you mean? It was for babies and toddlers but can't remember what it was called. I think it starts again next week so I'll go along if I can waddle there!

FfreckleFface · 08/01/2009 21:19

Hiya. I live out in Benson, but getting into Oxford is no problem at all. Have a 10mo daughter, who loves getting out and about meeting other babies. Thurs 22nd would be good for us.

skidaddle · 08/01/2009 22:27

hi Ffreckle and Loosey!

Shall we say Rainbow House on Thursday 22nd at 1pm? Maybe we should meet outside or else we will have no idea which mums we are IYKWIM?

Loosey - love the sound of both those groups - maybe we could meet at one of those next time (if you are not mid-labour/have a tiny newborn to cope with!)

LooseyC · 10/01/2009 21:17

Hello - 22nd is my due date!

Count me in at the moment though as it would be good to have something arranged to occupy my mind if the baby decides not to be on time - though I may not be in a terribly good mood! Think RH closes at 2pm so should be enough time for lunch.

There are really tons of things to do in Oxford skidaddle. For the sake of DS I hope to be back going to them soon afterwards or he will be going cabin crazy, so hopefully see you at some of them. That is if I can get up/ sit down/ put down the baby/ chocolate etc..

skidaddle · 12/01/2009 13:40

excellent loosey - don't they say you should always organise to do something nice on your due date so that you don't fixate on the lack of baby!

This is probably my last day of internet access (before movong to oxford) so i will be waiting at the door of Rainbow House at 1pm on 22nd and hope to see you all there!

Jazzicatz · 12/01/2009 13:56

Good luck with the move Skidaddle

skidaddle · 12/01/2009 15:51

thanks Jazzi - aren't you on that writing up your thesis thread as well? Are you free on 22nd? We could swap PhD nightmare stories!

hewlettsdaughter · 12/01/2009 16:22

skidaddle - and anyone else - re child-friendly places to go in the centre of town, I like the cafe at the bottom of Modern Art Oxford. If you have a pushchair you can get down there in the special lift (although there's not loads of room to manouvre round the tables once you're down there).

Jazzicatz · 12/01/2009 17:07

I am skidaddle - would be good to talk PhD!!

Kellsmc · 12/01/2009 19:39

Hello - can I come too? I live 15 mins from Oxford, have dd 3 and ds 1, although both at nursery on Thursdays. I've been living in and around Oxford for a couple of years but commute to London for work so, to my shame, know very little of it. When I'm in town with dcs we spend most of the time at G&D's eating ice cream (whatever the weather).

LooseyC · 12/01/2009 20:50

Kellsmc - G&D's - Mmmmm! I like the after eight mint variety. I commuted to London before DS came along and knew my route to train station but not much else! Oxford is fab though. I've got so used to not commuting now goodness knows how I'll motivate myself to do it again...

See you all on the 22nd - maybe!

skidaddle · 13/01/2009 10:34

Oh brilliant - there are loads of us now!

See you there

hewlettsdaughter · 13/01/2009 20:12

Have a good time! (I will be working on 22nd).

Just in case anyone decides to try the cafe at MOA after I mentioned it, I have remembered that the lift only takes you from the entrance up to the ground floor of the bulding - if you want to go down to the cafe in the basement you have to negotiate a few steps. It is nice once you are down there though

rantothehills · 14/01/2009 22:24

hi all - wow, it's grown!

Hope to make it on 22nd though won't have youngest dc with me. If not, would be on for meeting up with him one Mon morning for the playhouse music thing.

Loosey how are you doing, any signs yet? (bet you're sick of being asked!)
Skidaddle -hope move goes well.

LooseyC · 16/01/2009 20:50

Hi there - no nothing yet, not surprising I guess but wish it was over with... Have had a few people ask so far but think enquiries will start in earnest next week!

By the way, the Playhouse music starts again this Monday coming (19th Jan) and it is teapot tinies (costs £5, but is for an hour). I'm going to go along hopefully - so if anyone else is I'm sure you'll spot me as I'm as big as several houses!

rantothehills · 17/01/2009 20:52

Great, might try and make Mon's class as well, hopefully see you there, loosey

OP posts:
LooseyC · 18/01/2009 20:28

Good stuff!

On Thurs 22nd I will probably be there before 1pm as I'm going to a baby group in the morning and there is no point going back home in between really. So I'm aiming to get there 12pm ish and let have DS have a play before getting some lunch. Still think I will definitely be there as my recent hot curry and pineapple have had no effect!
