Hello everyone!

I have been wanting to get a bit more cultural for ages now. Having children seems to mean that doing lovely things like reading books and watching interesting films get left by the wayside.

I really wanted to join a bookclub when i moved over this way. The nearest one to me is in Great Horkesley but i am a little scared of it because they seem to have a lot of Anne Widdecombe on the list!!! (She may be great - i don't know - but it did scare me a bit!!). Anyway, you all know the saga, you choose a book, read it, meet up in a month or so time and talk about and drink a glass of wine...

The other thing that i would love to do - but is a bit less done, is to find people to go to the cinema with (a film club??!!). My partner is not keen on going to the cinema and besides it leads to lots of baby sitting issues. Thought it would be a really good idea to have a bunch of girls or guys (but why not mums??) who would like to see decent films (democratic decision!) approximately once every three or four weeks?

Meet up, watch film, have a chat, maybe a drink before or after...

Anyone up for it? or is just me...

Hey! I would be up for a book club. Maybe not a film club for me because my DH would be so jealous, you know he doesnt do anything like that with his friends. But I love reading! I live in Coggeshall and I dont really have any friends here so am pretty lonely. Would love to meet other Mums!

pooter · 22/04/2008 23:31

ooh yes please! I love reading but i seem to be only getting parenting books at the minute - im a tad obsessed with my boy!! I would definitely be up for a book club, but not film, for the same reasons as eeny.

Do you know how to start one lucyfer? Who chooses the books - do we all read it simultaneously? Hang on - stupid question of course we do otherwise we couldnt talk about them!! Do we have intellecual conversations about them afterwards?

Anyway - count me in!

eenybeeny · 23/04/2008 14:10

yay! Oh and I am obsessed with parenting books too! And now that we are trying for our second baby I am re-reading all my baby books! I do read a lot of other stuff though as well mainly history. Maybe we could take turns picking a book? Or see if somewhere like Waterstones have suggestions?

lucyfer2000 · 23/04/2008 22:43

Hey, well i guess we would just meet up somewhere (either someones house or perhaps a pub for the first time) and write a list of books which we are interested in. Then we pick the first one and away we go! I shall do some book club research and find out more tips ...

I'll put the book club message on the book club thread of mumsnet as well as this local one and see what response we get. Apparently six to seven people is the premium number!

shall keep in touch

count me in! we can meet at my house if you want. Its small but I have a big fireplace

anyway we are moving to a bigger house soon well as soon as we can find one. Where are some other good places to live around here? Coggeshall is really nice but its hard to find nice rental houses and also its very expensive. anyway, slight change of subject there! sorry!

Twinkie1 · 24/04/2008 12:44

Hi Guys

WOuld be happy to join and you are moe than welcome to come here - will just have to relegate DH to the toy room or maybe sling him in the garden when it is sunny!

Mung · 24/04/2008 14:18

I am definitely keen to do the film club. You could all come here for that, but would need to tidy up our 'cinema room' as it also functions as a junk room.

As for the books...I'd come for the chat and the glass of wine (was that mentioned or was it just a figment of my imagination) as I read so slowly and tend to fall asleep after one page.

Eenybeeny...you should come along when we meet up next.

Twinkie1 · 24/04/2008 16:19

Ha ha - Mung that is how I have been at the moment so maybe the film club is better - I could drive the girls from this end up to you.

I only like chic lit and forensicy science murder mysterys if I come to the book club can I duck out of the serious reading?

eenybeeny · 24/04/2008 17:21

well we can do both! my DH said he wouldnt be TOO jealous if I was in a film club. Mung I will definitely try to come along when you meet up next, I'd love that! Any idea when that will be? In the meantime you all have an open invitation to Coggeshall!

Dynamicnanny · 24/04/2008 18:38

Count me in for both

lucyfer2000 · 25/04/2008 20:58

Hi guys!

It's great that everyone is so keen in giving something a go. Perhaps we could incorporate the two?? I think the best idea would be to keep it very relaxed, lets face it - no one has got heaps and heaps of time for reading, so i think a new book every two months would be enough.

Avid readers can always read something extra in between and slower readers will be encouraged to finish something for a change (I count myself in the latter these day! - but i really WANT to read more!)

Maybe we could watch a film in between???

I've put a link on the book cluby pages of mumsnet as well, just in case anyone else in the area is interested, but i think we probably have enough to have a go at it just with us. maybe we could even get some other local friends who aren't mums interested too!

Lets all have a think about what we might like to read and then meet up to discuss what to do and when to do it. I suggested a pub originally just because it is neutral territory, but i don't mind meeting in someones house if everyone is up for that. People are more than welcome to come to our house as well (i can send Mr Lucyfer2000 off to play squash!).

I guess one night next week would be good, failing that it would be after the bank holiday?

by the way pooter, i don't know what the environmental acadamy is -but may look it up! I am also a sell out i'm afraid... did an environmental science degree with great intentions of saving the world - but am now just a failed hippy, working for a consultancy that generally helps developers. oh well, hey ho!! perhaps we can compare notes when we meet!

OP posts:
eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 00:27

at least you have a degree!! That is something to be proud of! I am a waitress part time as I can only work nights now so I do 2 or 3 nights a week. I'm working on a novel but I dont think my writing is quite up to scratch I dont know we will see.

I am so excited to read a book and see a film I might not otherwise see! If we meet anywhere other than my house I would probably need a lift as I dont drive so sorry to be a pita!

pooter · 28/04/2008 17:43

Anyone up for seeing the new Mike Leigh - HAppy go lucky? Its not likely that my DH will be jealous of me going to see that, and its had good reviews.

Not sure when id be able to go though - have to get a sitter as DH is v late home from london.

eenybeeny · 28/04/2008 20:18

ooh whats it about? I would probably be up for it!

lucyfer2000 · 28/04/2008 21:12

I saw the preview for Happy go Lucky at cinema last time I went (don't be fooled - that was the first time in about 12 months!!) I thought that it looked really sweet and funny and i would definitely be up for going to see it. Definitely definitely not one for my blokey bloke!! (quite busy this week, but let me know when you are thinking of going and i will try to come along).

Annoyingly, I am really busy with weddings (not my own!!) and wierd work hours for the next couple of weeks. So, it looks like the week beginning 12 May is going to best for me, to start up this book/film club thing. Does anyone have any preferences for a night? Any night in that week is fine with me, although Monday would mean we definitely have to meet at my house because DP plays football (or 5 a side, or some wierdness).

Why don't we all just meet up and discuss it, much easier than random emails. We could all have a book/film in mind.

Eeny - i'm sure we can get you to who so evers house we choose. If we come to mine, i'm happy to give you a lift home if you can make it here.

eenybeeny · 28/04/2008 22:46

thanks Lucyfer! I can do most evenings I normally work sunday nights and then one weeknight - I will keep you posted! I will try to pin my stupid boss down on a proper schedule.

Happy Go Lucky sounds great! I agree we should all meet up and sort it out its so hard co-ordinating everyone's schedules!

lucyfer2000 · 01/05/2008 22:32

Ok well who fancies meeting up Week beginning 12 May. It would be great to have a chat with the kiddies sleeping. Gorgeous little monkeys that they are - but it is so hard to finish a thought, let alone a conversation when they are chitter chattering away.

Since i seem to be the instigator of this thing, i think it is probably right that i should host the first one (even though hosting something fills me with terror and memories of my 12th birthday party when everyone went down with the flu!!).

Tuesday or Wednesday (13th or 14th) are probably better for me - what is good with others? Will send man off to the squash club - as said before... Sure i can manage wine, tea, orange juice and the odd nibble or two!!?? x

OP posts:
eenybeeny · 02/05/2008 09:09

lucyfer that sounds like a plan to me! I need to find out what my work schedule is for that week and also try to get a lift but you can count me in! Dont worry you will do great hostessing!

eenybeeny · 03/05/2008 23:05

Got my schedule for next week. I am working Tues and Fri nights. Let me know! x

Mung · 04/05/2008 21:08

Evenings are a little difficult for me, as I teach. Hope you girls have a great time.

lucyfer2000 · 10/05/2008 20:23

It seems that news of my hostessing skills has preceded me once more!! that, and for some reason everyone thought we could do it in the day. NO WAY my kids would stand for that!!

Hey Eeny, seeing as you are still interested how do you fancy going to see that (or another) film on your night off instead??

Anyone else who sees the thread can come along too that way - still interested pooter?

OP posts:
pooter · 10/05/2008 22:43

ooh yes please! DH has wednesday off this week - is that ok for you two?

Theres no way i could do it in the daytime either - ds gets riled if i dont shower him with attention 24/7.

Ive just looked at the odeon colchester, and the film i wanted to see (Happy go lucky) isnt showing!!!! that disappeared quickly.

looks like we could see one of 3 chickflicks,

  1. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
What´s the plot?

Being heartbroken has never been so funny!

?Forgetting Sarah Marshall? is the story of Peter, a struggling musician desperately in love with Sarah. Everything is going well until Sarah dumps him so in an attempt to forget her, he goes on holiday, only to find her there with her new beau!

From the creators of ?40 Year Old Virgin?, ?Forgetting Sarah Marshall? stars Jason Segel as Peter, Russel Brand as Brit rocker Aldous and Paul Rudd (Friends).

  1. Made of Honour
What´s the plot?

Tom has everything, well nearly everything.

?Made of Honour? is the story of Tom (Patrick Dempsey ? Grey?s Anatomy), a successful, sexy, ladies man. His best friend is Hannah and they have the perfect relationship, she is after all the only constant in his life. But when Hannah goes away for six weeks, Tom realises how much he misses Hannah and decides to propose to her when she returns, but Hannah has a surprise of her own.

If you enjoyed ?My Best Friends Wedding? you?ll love ?Made of Honour?.

  1. What Happens in Vegas

What happens in Vegas?, stays in Vegas!

?What happens in Vegas? is the story of Jack (Kutcher) and Joy (Diaz) - two people down on their luck who meet in Vegas, and following a night of debauchery, end up married! Whilst deciding to get a divorce, a shared gambling chip ends up netting one of them $3 million dollars. The newlyweds devise ever-escalating schemes to undermine each other and get their hands on the money - only to find themselves falling in love amid the mutual backstabbing.

If you liked ?Little Miss Sunshine? you?ll love ?What happens in Vegas?.

I have to say - number two sounds truly dreadful. Im leaning towards 3, because i DID love little miss sunshine - and as ive mentioned before, Ashton and his webbed toes is very pretty!

What to you think? Were you hoping to go and see something a little more edifying???

lucyfer2000 · 12/05/2008 20:45

Hi Pooter Wednesday is ok for me. Personally i would quite like to see the film with Russel Brand because for some strange reason i find him funny and would quite like to see how well he acts!! open to persuasion however!

I also wouldn't mind driving to Braintree if it made it easier for Eeny. We could pick her up on the way? Are you following the thread eeny?? don't want you to feel like you are stranded in Coggeshall with no transport! Maybe Happy go lucky is still on at braintree??

OP posts:
eenybeeny · 12/05/2008 23:13

oh thanks girls I appreciate not being forgotten!! I am happy to see anything - a night out with you will be lovely I am not fussy! I must say I loved Little Miss Sunshine (even started a thread abotut it!) but I like Russell Brand as well (No, Not in a sexual way, DH if you are reading this!) hehe

You just let me know. I really appreciate a lift if you can give me one and I am easy to please with movies!!
