Hi all, Dh and I try and get out for a meal every month (last time was May!!!!) but we are looking for good places to go. I noticed that the local listings do not seem to have many eating locations. Anyone got any good recommendations and can you add them to the map. Cheers

Hiya, assume you're talking sans enfants.
The Blue Island caff on Above Bar does authentic Greek mezes on Fri and Sat nights if you book. You will be totally stuffed and have to ask for a doggy bag though (less than £15 a head). George's Greek restaurant is good value too but not as romantic.
I'm told the Indian (well, Keralan) over the KFC on Above Bar, opposite La Tavernetta, is the best in town but haven't tried it myself.

Kachina Chinese restaurant in Shirley is v nice, the buffet is excellent value. Also Puccini's Italian in Shirley too. Both are on Shirley High Street.

NappyValley · 03/09/2007 14:02

Thanks guys haven't tried any of those.

My mum surprised us on Friday with the offer of babysitting for a few hours, and despite both being heavy with summer colds we went to Blue Keys Hotel in Northlands Road. It was delicious and the live music was great.

the Keralan place is gorgeous especially if you're veggie.

Kachina in Shirley is the best chinese around I reckon

Joe Dafloe's opposite the Mayflower is nice too - for a special evening out

Tommy · 04/09/2007 11:17

ooh - nearly forgot - Dock o'the Bay at Stag Gates (top of dual carriageway bit of the Avenue) is lovely

billysitch · 04/09/2007 11:19

yup had heard that too about dock o the bay, must try it, off out this friday night with OH so think it could be on the list of maybes! Thanks for that tommy

billysitch · 04/09/2007 11:20

Oh ment to say that Miguels off Commercial Road is a fantastic fish and spanish resturant, mind you a bit biased, a friend owns it.

billysitch · 04/09/2007 11:21

MEANT - obviously, doh dictionary someone!

billysitch · 04/09/2007 11:22

Had a gorgeous meal at the Olive Tree on Oxford Street the other day, with DH and the in-laws. Pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. They specialise in fresh fish dishes, if that floats your boat.

geekInPigtails · 13/09/2007 16:43

ooo, and I also like the Bouzy Rouge, which is in a basement near the bargate - I think you stand just north of the bargate, face south, and on your left you'll see an opening between two shops (can't remember which sorry!) with a sign above. You go through the opening and down some steps. Slightly unusual because it's sort of themed on Alice in Wonderland, but really amazing food and lovely dark romantic atmosphere.

NappyValley · 20/09/2007 21:38

Thanks guys what a great list. DH loves his fish so will have to find Miguels.

Must say we have tried Bouzy Rouge and got to are that it is fun and has a special feel with its nooks and crannies, but we were very underwelmed by the food - nice enough but we did not think the food was good value for money.

Dock o the Bay is good and have eaten there several times. It is much nicer now it is smoke free, and used to have mums-only nights out there. BUT have to say food is nice but again did not make me think wow that is excellent.

Olive Tree - haven't been therefor about 3 years but always thought it was quite good.

Maybe we are just too fussy!! Or maybe we have got fussier since the chance of a night out has got slimmer!!

BillyStich glad I have found someone that matches my typing skills!

There's a restaurant in Chandlers Ford called Kings Court which I've always wanted to try. Apparently it's unintentionally hilarious, completely stuck in the 1960s from decor to menu - Maryland chicken, black forest gateau etc.
Also, Colley's supper rooms in Swaythling is a fun experience. Very good food but strange - Pat Butcher wallpaper, waitresses in Victorian dress, giant versions of the puddings get brought round for you to choose.
You have to book both of these.

NappyValley · 30/09/2007 20:46

Good point- I haven't been to Colleys since Ds was born. Great place to go with friends.

whoops · 30/09/2007 20:48

I've driven past Colleys loads of times and always wondered what it was like inside!
I went to Pilgrim's House for a chinese meal last night I've been there a few times and not been disappointed

MamaMaiasaura · 30/09/2007 21:13

Love the pilgrims house too.

Another very good one is the Old Forge in Otterbourne.

Put off Colleys because of area (not a snob, honest) as rented a flat in high road years ago and loads of trouble there.

whoops · 30/09/2007 21:16

I'd heard the old Forge was good too!
I'm supposed to be finding somewhere for our Christmas lunch too - must phone round places tomorrow!!

MamaMaiasaura · 30/09/2007 21:20

The Old Forge is very good although a little pricey you get what you pay for. USed ot like the Fox and Hounds near fair oak dont knwo what it is like now.

whoops · 30/09/2007 21:25

I go to the Fox & Hounds every week for lunch with a friend and we can't complain about it! But we do only ever have a jacket potato!!

Cherrypie32 · 01/10/2007 12:48

I love The Bugle in Hamble, always take visiting friends there. Always good value 'gastro-pub' type food and pretty surroundings. Went to the Thai Cafe nr Oxford Street a couple weeks ago. I believe it moved from up by the Mayflower? Nice but very expensive - set menu was £25 per head. Think you used to be able to take your own alcohol but not anymore which may have made a difference.

MamaMaiasaura · 01/10/2007 15:19

oo Oxford Street is a fab place to eat, olive tree, the indian there (name escapes me) and the london hotel.

MummyBrownlow · 12/11/2007 15:03

Hi, I'm new to MumsNet and live in Highfield. I've been to Cenos a few times, mostly at lunchtime when I've skived off work. I did go to a charity function there ones in the evening and the food was fabulous. I might be slightly biased though coz a friend owns it. Would recommend it though and not as busy as it should be because it is a bit off the beaten track.

JM and I never get out in the evenings unfortunately but need to start again I think!

NappyValley · 12/11/2007 19:49

Oh yes Cenos has been good.

Girls must say we are doing really well here. Are all of these wonderful places you have all mentions on the map?? I suppose I should really check and add them if they are not!!!

We still have not managed to get out, BUT have promised to get back into the routine of once a month in December!!
