Hi, I am relocating my family from Devon to Winsford, Cheshire in the New Year and would love to hear people's views on my big move.I have read mixed reviews with some being dreadful?!?I have 2 young boys and would love to hear about local schools and youth activities. Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas!!

OP posts:
pieceofpurplesky · 27/12/2016 12:33

Both Winsford and Runcorn were new towns built to accommodate overspill from Manchester and Liverpool.
The outskirts of Winsford have, to be fair, some OK areas but Winsford itself has nothing to offer.
There are some lovely new estates in and around Northwich with access to much better schools. What are you looking for - budget/rooms etc. Let's see if we can find you a house!

Isn't 'Over' named so as it's the Overspill from Liverpool. Sure we did that at school

Want2bSupermum · 28/12/2016 07:16

Over is normally the higher elevation with the opposite being Lower. Under is used to denote other side of a waterway.

I think Crewe is a hangover of the potteries plus there has been a couple of generations now that breed a lot compared to rest of the country.

CheshireEditor · 28/12/2016 11:49

Thanks for your post OP.

You hear it straight from the horses mouth on this site! The good, bad and the ugly. It's true the reputation of Winsford is not great and it is one of the poorest places in the county. However, like all places there are some good and bad bits.

Have you been for a visit? Only you can decide if the place is right for you and your family. Others have made some suggestions about other locations nearby such as Northwich, Hartford, Sandbach etc So whilst you are here it would be worth having a good look around to get a bigger picture.

Let us know how you are getting on.

CheshireEditor · 28/12/2016 11:56

'Breed a lot compared to the rest of the country' and 'the dregs of Manchester and Liverpool' Yikes Shock

I have to ask on behalf of out Cheshire Mumsnetters who live in Winsford and we have lots, do you have the stats/facts to back this up?

Booxtwo · 28/12/2016 13:21

I sincerely think a number of people need to get down off their soap boxes. There are good and bad parts to EVERY town including the likes of Knutsford and Wilmslow. "Even the kids don't like living in the town" - find me a teenager that is happy with anything and your comment may carry some merit.
Northwich is absolutely no better what so ever! You people make it sound like the bronx!! Like it's completely unsafe. It's Winsford, not Hollyoaks!! :)
I went to the academy. I was a straight A student across the board. My brothers, sisters and I have all been raised in Winsford and all five of us have become professionals, two with their own successful businesses, all of us with further education and now with gorgeous families of our own. Our children are being raised in Winsford. They are the most polite, well behaved, pleasant children you could meet.
Winsford has a bad reputation. But to be frank, it carries no less a55holes than any other town. I'd rather live here than amongst the likes of the arrogant, narcissistic people commenting on this post.

Voicesinmyear · 28/12/2016 14:15

I'd rather live here than amongst the likes of the arrogant, narcissistic people commenting on this post. not all of us Boox, I've repeatedly said I know sweet fa about Winsford so can't comment.

I think the fact that you went to the school, live there now and will be sending your children speaks volumes. Not one person in my class at high school where I grew up sent their children to that school.

Voicesinmyear · 28/12/2016 14:18

And Ed I was more upset about this bit I think Crewe is a hangover of the potteries. Like most places there are some rough places yet, but there are also sone very nice areas and if you include the surrounding villages some super wealthy areas, including a few people on the Times Rich List.

pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2016 16:10

Boox I am as equally qualified to comment on Winsford as you. You are in the minority and I teach children from Winsford who have the attitude that they do not like it. I am not arrogant or narcissistic but I have worked and taught children from the area for 20 years - so I can comment with a lot of experience that you and your family are in the minority - most of my Winsford friends would do anything rather than send their kids to the Academy.

dawntigga · 28/12/2016 16:25

I live there. If you have young children I HIGHLY recommend High Street Primary School, it's large but the head knows the name of every child there and the teachers are fantastic. It encourages the children and because of the size is able to afford extra teachers for cohorts that need them, reducing class sizes.
Winsford has issues, but so does everywhere. It really depends where you are in the town. Knights Grange is fine.
Some people on here are going to strangle themselves with their judging pants.
It's population is becoming more diverse which is an excellent thing imnsho.
Benefits are being close enough to Northwich for Barons Quay without having to put up with the dreadful one way system to often. The market has a great veg stall, cheese stall and the precinct (whilst awful I admit, think 60's precinct) has pretty much everything you need including an actual butchers.
There's a good pool and gym at the Brio.
There is no nightlife, I'd recommend going to DeeBees once so you know why you should never go again. The Red Lion is pleasant and the food is reasonably priced. If you go on a Friday you get to see the karaoke guy do a shit ton of streets in Winsford to the tune of Reet Petit 😁
There will be an uplift and gentrification generated by the new build estates due to be built and Barons Quay.
We have our eccentrics, Johnny Depp woman and Elvis woman spring to mind.
DM me we'll meet up for a coffee and I'll show you round.
Also, thanks to some of you for reminding me why I'm not on here that much anymore.

Sorry Voicesinmyear, didn't read that to be negative, I don't know the area that well and always thought The Potteries a nice place to live and I still think that.

The OP asked what people thought and people have said! I think that until the OP comes and sees for herself it will hard to make up her mind.

I live in Knutsford and 'people think' we are all minted and drive round in a Rolls! So not true.

pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2016 16:40

You really need to come and have a look before you make any decisions. Look at surrounding areas .. similar prices? Better area and schools

rayray9726 · 28/12/2016 20:43

So the keyboard warriors were out, on Christmas day too - thought they would have had better things to do! The majority of these posts dont actually help the OP, I will try and do that!

Ive lived on the outskirts of Winsford for over five years. Prior to this I lived in the Knights Grange area and actually grew up five minutes walk from Lytham Drive.

When we moved house 5 years ago we looked at many surrounding areas and came to the conclusion that Winsford was the best value for money coupled with acceptable local amenities. There are numerous gym's, a large leisure centre (which is being revamped in 2017, although completely fine how it is) and plenty of green space. There are numerous primary schools, and agree with a previous poster regarding High Street CP School. Whilst its a large primary school it has excellent leadership and teaches the children a solid set of morals. Class sizes are generally also smaller than average. It also embraces the arts, so is all encompassing for those children that flourish at art and crafts but not maths and science! I don't know anyone that sends their child out of the town for primary education. There are also numerous day nurseries, my personal choice was Littler Grange as it has great outside space and the staff are excellent. Both of my girls have been there, the same people run Kiddiecare day nursery which we use for school holiday clubs etc.

There are numerous supermarkets and you can travel to Northwich for M&S Food/Waitrose or Nantwich for M&S Food with the added bonus of a huge Sainsburys. Nantwich is my preferred option as it is easier to get to and far easier to park. The town centre is also pretty but note that it has as many charity shops as any other town centre in the UK, including Northwich, Crewe, Sandbach, Hartford and any other areas that people have mentioned; I'm sure Devon too!

The era of the town centre has died, they dont work anymore. Work is actually starting on Winsford town centre early in 2017 with part of it being demolished, this work will continue throughout the year but we await final plans.

You are five minutes from The Hollies which is an amazing farm shop with butchers (although its the same Butcher that runs the shop in the town centre) and grocers, if you want local fruit and veg. They also have a nice restaurant. Two minutes from The Hollies is Cabbage Hall (part of the Pesto chain) which is also great dining.

I rarely visit Northwich, whilst the Baron's Quay development is good for the area (although I haven't visited TBH) the town centre is nearly as empty as Winsford. The traffic is also a nightmare, and I just hate traffic. Crewe has a bit more choice in terms of retail chains BUT again, the traffic is dire and everywhere you go you get stuck in a traffic jam (i used to work there). It quicker and easier to drive into Chester! Thats another bonus, you are close enough to visit regularly without paying the premium of City living. Also good commuter links for Chester/Liverpool/Manchester - although Manchester has a lot of roadworks at the moment and can be problematic. If you have to commute down to London its only 1:40 on the fast train from Crewe so even that's made easy. If you are on the 7am train like me, then you can get to the station in 20 minutes from Winsford.

The local main hospital is Leighton which is on the outskirts of Crewe, nowhere near the traffic :) I've had reason to visit a lot and have always had a good experience. But again, with hospitals there are good and bad stories about them all, I can only vouch for my experiences.

Lytham Drive is perfectly fine, in fact we considered purchasing one of the houses when they were originally being built 15 years ago! There was a bit of a bidding war for them! You are 5 minutes walk from the Whitegate way which provides amazing walks and countryside; if you follow the paths correctly you can get all the way to Delamere Forest, which again is an amazing green space for walking and cycling. I'm not sure you would get that so close, anywhere else. You are also five minutes from the golf course and open fields which have a covenant on them and cannot be built on for a long time. Teams from all over Cheshire play there on a weekend both junior and adult teams. Not sure how active you are but there are a few local cycle clubs and running clubs that meet regularly.

In terms of High School, there is now only one choice - the Academy. Not sure how old (or indeed if you do) have children, I think schooling is a personal choice. I can tell you that a parent I know sent her child out of the town to a High School in Northwich and she was bullied terribly, with little intervention or support from the school. She moved her daughter to the Academy in Year 8 and never regretted it. Her daughter got 12 A grade GCSE's was a school ambassador and chair of the student council. They rebuilt her damaged confidence and she flourished - she is now studying her A-Levels at a great sixth form in Northwich called Sir John Dene's. I'm sure people could tell you a contradictory story but these exist for every school in every area. Your best option is to simply visit them and go with your gut instinct. If you dont like the academy then there are other options; being St Nicholas RC, Hartford, Sandbach and Tarporley (which is ten minutes away and also has some great places to dine).

My sister worked as a Child Protection Officer for Cheshire East (the other half of Cheshire where Knutsford, Wilmslow etc are located), and I can guarantee that there were some horror stories - no more or less than any other area of the County.

Are there issues with parts of Winsford........yes, but they are generally contained to certain areas and don't spread throughout the rest of the town. I feel perfectly safe walking my dog in the dark down country lanes. In fact, I don't remember the last time I heard of crime from any of my friends or colleagues. My neighbours relocated from an affluent area in the midlands around 15 years ago and have nothing bad to say, in fact they moved here from Northwich as they liked the increased green space. The lady at the end of our lane moved into her house two years ago having relocated from the South for her husbands work, again she loves it.

When we were looking to move five years ago we were considering local villages called Whitegate/Sandiway but after consideration decided it was purely for snob value; we would still have to travel into Winsford (or Northwich) to do our shopping, visit the doctor or the dentist so there really wasn't much point to paying a premium for a smaller house. Now if our pot was unlimited that would be a different story - I would want a farm house with some land :)

I do hope this helps you a little more than some of the other posts, if you have any more specific questions do let me know!

xx

Booxtwo · 28/12/2016 21:05

Bravo rayray!!

moogle87 · 28/12/2016 22:28

Personally I would avoid Winsford & the vast majority of Crewe.

I worked in one of the Winsford schools before it became the Academy & it wasn't good (that's putting it very nicely!) I wouldn't choose for my children to go there. Although it might have improved since becoming an Academy (from what I know, it hasn't though.)

Middlewich & Northwich are good places to look at in Cheshire.

Sandbach is too, but the house prices are much higher & in my opinion, the slightly better schools & slightly nearer location to Manchester isn't worth the additional cost. But then it really depends on what your priorities are.
You really need a car to get around in Middlewich & you need to be prepared to drive to go to things like a cinema, large supermarket etc.
That being said, if I had to choose between Middlewich & Sandbach I would choose Middlewich, but then I grew up there. It has also been in the news as one of the best places to live in the UK:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-28918709

Northwich has just had a lot of money spent on improving the town centre. I would live there. Most of the schools are good, although there are a few areas that I would personally avoid.

moogle87 · 28/12/2016 22:30

Just one additional quick note....

If you choose to live in Winsford I know that some people will send their children to Middlewich High & I know that Leftwich High also used to accept children from Winsford as well. I worked at Leftwich & went to school in Middlewich.

I'm not sure what the criteria is though.

blackpoolassy · 28/12/2016 22:36

Word of caution re: st nick's. Getting a really bad Rep at the moment with multiple past teachers saying do not send your kids there. Although recent change of headship may turn that around

Voicesinmyear · 29/12/2016 10:08

I live in Knutsford and 'people think' we are all minted and drive round in a Rolls! So not true.. You mean you're not and you don't Ed? I'm totally shocked Grin

rayray9726 · 29/12/2016 11:02

Please let the OP know about the areas you like or would avoid and with reasons; they don't need everyone's opinion; these will always be contradictory, because we all have different opinions.

Note about Middlewich, the traffic is awful in peak times. There have been talks about a bypass but this is now not happening because of HS2. And it's in both directions, trying to get to the motorway and from the motorway becomes a right pain! No idea re: the primary schools in Middlewich and not sure on green space, parks etc. I know there is a school bus from Winsford to Middlewich High but by the sounds of it you are a good few years off high schools and in that time things can change considerably. You don't need to decide anything about that right now.

There are plenty of activities/clubs for young girls and boys. Football, karate, skate park, I'm sure there are more but I have two girls so it's all about gymnastics and dancing, and there is plenty of that! There is also an indoor play area and an indoor trampoline park which is new.

No, there isn't a cinema or bowling alley or any of the other things that bigger towns may have but you have to weigh up the pros and cons. If we are going to the cinema or bowling it's an 'event' so tend to go to Cheshire Oaks, Chester (30 mins away) or even the Trafford Centre which is about 45 mins.

Sorry I can't be more 'boy' informed :)

CheshireEditor · 29/12/2016 11:32

I wish Voicesinmyear, I wouldn't have a Rolls though, I'd settle for any car with working heating at the moment!

Great post rayray9726 - do you mind if I pop it on our Facebook page?

dawntigga - please din't let a few keyboard warriors put you off, loads of great stuff, info, things to do and advice on these pages!

moogle87 · 30/12/2016 00:00

I agree, the traffic in Middlewich can be horrendous. But not all of Middlewich.
As a previous poster has said, the traffic issues are if you are going out of the town towards the M6 or coming off the M6 & heading towards the town.
Having said that, there are plenty of country lanes around there that will take you around the traffic & to the other side of Middlewich. You just need to know where you are going.
As far as I know the Middlewich primary schools have a good reputation. My BIL sends his kids to Cledford Primary & is very happy with it.

pieceofpurplesky · 30/12/2016 10:44

Cheshire I am not a keyboard warrior - just expressing an opinion through a lot of experience. As the OP asked.

Voicesinmyear · 30/12/2016 13:21

I suppose Ed if you were minted and you were a true supporter of all things Cheshire, it would have to be a Bentley rather than a Rolls anyway Smile.

I'll swap you no heating for a car which has decided today that it will go into gear but only when the engine is switched off...
