Moving From USA to Sheffield England need advice and help?

I'm trying to decide if I should stay in the USA or move to Sheffield England.
My daughter is 12 and she ice Skates, so I will need a good coach for her, great school and a place to rent. Any help?? Advice???

There are other places slightly further afield but this is the best place in Sheffield. They do open sessions and classes. There is also Ponds Forge leisure centre with all sorts of sports and activities and an Olympic sized swimming pool. Sheffield is very sporty.

What is it that's made you pick Sheffield? Do you have family here?

My daughter also has asthma and I heard that Sheffield children hospital is good and they be will seeing her there once I'm in the UK.

No I don't have any family there, but I heard Sheffield has one of the best ice skating rinks in the UK.

Do they do private lesson there? What about schools?

They do all sorts of lessons, you can do classes and I think there are a few tutors around too (although I'm not 100% sure if what's what anymore, it's been a while since I was fully in the know)

As for schools I don't know a huge deal sorry, but I think there a couple of threads on here where people have mentioned schools if you can find the threads.

Sheffield is one of, I not the most, green city in the UK so it's great for asthma and the children's hospital I've heard is brilliant. I live closer to another hospital though so havent experienced that one. I have asthma myself and it's gotten tonnes better living since living here.

Transport links are really good with trains to everywhere and there's a good bus and tram system around the city too.

I don't know much about the Sports side of things, but I can tell you that Sheffield is a great place to live. But shhhh don't tell everyone. It has lots of green space and parks and is on the edge of the Peak District. Property rental is much more affordable here than in the south of England.

People here are very friendly too.

One of my friends has a daughter with asthma and multiple allergies, she's at the Children's Hospital a lot and has always been very pleased with their care.

Transport links are very good to other parts if the country.

Is it just for the Ice Skating? That's a big move. What do you do for work?

No not just for ice skating, I'm am a UK citizen, but never lived there so I want to try it before I'm too old :) ! Also my other children live in Ireland, so I will be near to them. I'm hoping to get a part-time job. My husband is a painter/ contractor. Keep us in your prayers.

We rented for a while in Mosborough which is really nice, but too expensive for us to buy though! We're now in Aston where buying is better but not sure about rental.

Avoid Manor Top, Gleadless and Darnall if I were you though, there's plenty nice people who live there and it's cheaper but there are anti-social/crime issues in parts.

Parts of S6 are very nice. Loxley and the top of Stannington and also Worrall, Oughtibridge put you in catchment for Bradfield School which has a great reputation.

Is 7th grade 12/13?

Best secondaries in Sheffield are Tapton, Silverdale and High Storrs.
Just be aware that house prices are very high in these areas. These are all in S10 and S11.

I also think King Ecberts(s17) and Bradfield are Ok

May I suggest, of your DD has asthma, you might want to look at living up a hill (we have many). We're in Greenhill and on a few days a year you can see the fog/smog hanging low over the city centre and valleys. I think the Tinsley / M1 part of town in particular suffers poor air quality.

I was going to say if your DD has Asthma then look for somewhere to live at the top of a hill.

Why Sheffield? Can you get jobs there? Do you have a right to live/work in the UK? Does your husband?

If your DD is 7th grade, that is year 6 probably in the UK. If she is 11 before 31st August then she would be in year 7 which is the first year of secondary. If she is 11 after 1st September then she would be in year 6, the last year of Primary.

Just moved from Sheffield and miss it terribly, I lived in Meersbrook and it's the most awesome (quite hippyish) community strong place I've lived.

We are UK citizens. Yes she's 12. What does hippyish mean? What about crosspool area? I thought Sheffield would be a great place to live and I hear the Sheffield Children hospital there is good that's Why I chose Sheffield.

Should I chose somewhere else? Have any of you lived in the US?

Does anyone have children who ice skates?

I was also thinking Coventry or Nottingham at one point???

Are there gangs problems in Shefffield!

Nottingham has a good ice rink and a great ice skating training programme. I know of a few people who have moved to the area purely so their DC can train with the coaches there.

Forgot to mention it's training for competitive purposes. Nottingham is great place to live and there's some lovely little villages/towns not too far away that are great to live in.

Nottingham is often considered the "home" of ice skating in England, although Sheffield did host the European Figure Skating Championships in 2012

Hippyish means there's festivals and vegan shops and bike riders and unicycles and happy shiny people.

I never saw a gang there.

Nottingham is quite a vibrant city but certain areas are notorious, like so many other UK cities. Surrounding areas are nice though and lots of redevelopment which could be useful for your dh work. Look toward the South and East of the city centre - Southwell, Bingham, Ruddington, West Bridgeford. Are you looking at state or private schools? QMC and University City Hospital are regional centres of excellence in many fields.

Sheffield is much nicer than Nottingham, with less social problems.

Notre Dame is one of the best schools in the country.

For houses look at Dore, Totley in the south or bradfield and oughtibridge to the north. Bradfield school did have a good reputation, but they've reopened the sixth form and its sucking up a lot of cash.

It's very very safe, there is practically no crime at all. Safe to walk anywhere at night. It's semi rural, we get foxes.

Nice community and excellent schools. Dd plays out on the street. It's a very very family orientated area.

And it has no gangs, unless you count the gangs of children.
