We have teamed up with JCB Explore to offer local Mumsnetters the chance to win a Child's JCB Mini Trac Tipping Dumper. Built to last (and withstand the rough and tumble of indoor and outdoor play), this ride-on will help develop your little one's coordination and encourage them - hopefully - to play outside.

This bright, realistic, foot-to-floor JCB Mini Trac Tipping Dumper is indeed a perfect ride-on for your little builder. It has a tipping bucket that helps your little one to transport their toys (or even sand, earth, pebbles or leaves, if they're being adventurous) around. Better still, it shares several working features with real vehicles - making it the ultimate first set of wheels! This Dumper also has knee indentation for scooting and a steering wheel with a squeaky horn.

JCB believes in constructive play: "we want to inspire children in their play, encourage them to use their imagination, and where possible, engage them in physical activity. We also want children to explore the world around them and find adventure in their own home and garden."

To be in with a chance of winning a JCB Mini Trac Tipping Dumper ride-on, please comment (on the thread below) on your own memories of outdoor play as a child. (Please note you do need to be a registered Mumsnetter to enter. If you're not already one, why not join us here? It's quick and very simple.)

The competition closes on 14 June 2015 (midday). The winner will chosen at random and notified shortly thereafter. The prize cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash or refunded.

The JCB Mini Trac Tipping Dumper is suitable for Ages 2+.
Its dimensions are: H 41cm, W30cm, D63cm. It weighs 4.6Kg.
It retails at £65 and can be purchased from Amazon, Argos, Asda and Toytastic.

Or why not check out www.JCBExplore.com a new resource website designed for both kids and their grown-ups!

We'd get rugs and sheets and make camps in the garden, you could keep us entertained all day with that and then we wouldn't want to come in at night time!

We used to play with a bit of elastic for hours on end, jumping in and out of it and singing rhymes. Can't remember what it was called but you had a person standing either end with the elastic round their ankles to make a rectangle shape then a third person would jump in and out doing nifty moves!!!! All cheap and cheerful and very low tech, oh happy days!!!

Loved "playing out" as a child. We only came in (unless we were told otherwise) when it got too dark. Lived on a quiet street (then) and had plenty of friends who lived close by. Great times.

We used to play two balls and although I could manage the balls I couldn't remember the rhymes we used to use.

Sassyone19 · 13/06/2015 21:51

Used to be out on bike all the timex

penelopa024 · 13/06/2015 22:46

I used to love playing hopscotch - but not the traditional english one but the german Himmel und Hölle

frennie1 · 13/06/2015 23:23

We used to be out riding our bikes all day or making mud pies in the garden with old pots and pans, dishes etc :)

Making mud pies in the garden, then throwing them at the house wall

We spent a lot of time playing sports of all kinds, climbing trees, running through the woods to the Abbey Ruins, collecting chestnuts in autumn, and inventing games that all the kids up the street joined in with. We loved it when we got Swingball and used to hold mini championships! I liked my boxing gloves; my sister didn't! I the summer my mum would even bring 'indoor games' like Scrabble, Monopoly and Cluedo outside into the garden and lay out a blanket, bring cold drinks and sandwiches and make it a lot of fun. Playing conkers, hide & seek, tag etc were also popular.

Thank you for your entries - we've very much enjoyed reading thro' your memories of outdoor play - noting there's not much mention of digital enhancement to it Wink.

Thank you so much for this!

My DS (aged 3) absolutely loves his Mini Trac Tipping Dumper. As soon as it dawned on him it was his, he leapt on it and rode gleefully around the garden.

The tipper bucket is the best thing about it, and makes this a vehicle he can play with really creatively. So far, he has transported his beloved puppy (see picture); much sand from the sandpit; a handful of pea pods for supper harvested from his pea-den; and lots of rocks and sticks. Then DS used it to stand on so he could try to climb a tree Hmm.

Happily, the JCB is properly tough and can cope with the rigours of hefting small boulders and boys around the garden without its wheels splaying under the weight.

It took about half an hour to put together, and you do need a hammer and screwdriver. I struggled with the wheels, as you need to hammer plastic hubs into the axel with considerable force, and ended up waiting for DH to come home Blush to do it for me so I could have a second opinion.

The only drawback is that it is definitely a little boy's toy. The age guidance is for 2-4 year olds, and DS is a big three year old, but can't quite zoom around at the speed he'd like because his legs are already too long. However, I do know of several toddlers who would love to get their hands on this next summer... Smile
