Anyone else enrolling their child for P1 next week?

I knew that Glasgow school enrollment was in January but sort of assumed I'd get a letter or something...anyway, I checked the council website just there and apparently it's next week.

Do you have to make an appointment or do you just drop in to see the school secretary or something Confused? I'm not bothered about seeing round the school as it'll be closing and ds will be going to the new Hillhead Primary in the summer.

At least that's what I'm assuming (see, there's those assumptions again). I need to phone them don't I...

yes phone them and they'll tell you everything you need to know

suzikettles · 10/01/2011 20:58

Thanks ssd - will phone tomorrow.

oh my ds will be starting there aswell- i phoned up the educational dept and they said you just enrol them in the local school and it will be an automatic transfer over to hillhead when it opens

i asked about open days for hillhead but the woman i spoke to wasn't sure and she said that the head teacher should know:)

suzikettles · 11/01/2011 18:27

kirmcc - I phoned our (current) catchment school and they told me that Hillhead is doing the enrollment for all the schools which will be moving to the new site.

Hillhead's enrollment times are next Tuesday am from 1.30 until 3 (I think - I didn't write it down because I won't be able to manage that day) and next Thursday from 9.30 - 12.

You need to bring ds's birth cert and a utility bill to prove address.

I'm really excited at ds starting at a brand new school as I went to a new build in P2 and I remember how special it felt having everything so fresh being the first classes in the building Smile

Oh DD2 will be starting too!

kirmcc · 11/01/2011 18:37

hmm well i'm glad i posted on here then :)

and the finding the birth certificate isn't going too well- however i did find dds one that i needed 3 years ago and had to buy a replacement for!

i'm dreading him starting- hes not wanting to go and will know no one as hes in the gaelic nursery- changed my mind about gaelic education:)- it took him weeks to adjust to nursery so i'll be the hysterical mother on his first day there :)

weegiemum · 11/01/2011 18:39

kirmcc I didn't realise you had changed minds about GM? Is your dd moving too? We've been really happy with the school, its a shame it hasn't worked for you.

kirmcc · 11/01/2011 18:43

dd is out already:) i went to see the local school and took her out gme the next day, she was really unhappy there despote what the teachers seemed to think:)

CommanderDrool · 11/01/2011 18:44

Dd1 is there already. The P1 teachers are very experienced. The kids seem to love the headteacher. He has lots of interesting toys in his office apparently!

kirmcc · 11/01/2011 18:44
  • despite not despote- think i need to take my contacts out lol
suzikettles · 11/01/2011 18:52

Yes I think it's going to be a good school.

I'm feeling a bit wobbly about ds going - for purely sentimental reasons - but I think he's ok about it. One of his nursery friends is going too and it sounds like they have a good scheme of visits etc before they start.

Also have started making a mental list of things ds needs to be able to do before August.

Wiping his own bottom properly is top of it .

Am I the only one from the southside then? Dd is starting at the new shiny (not quite complete yet) school at the end of our road. She is really looking forward to it. I on the otherhand am trying to work out what we do for before/ after school and holiday childcare :)

weegiemum · 11/01/2011 18:58

nulgirl I'm southside but my kids travel to the Gaelic school. Are you talking about Tinto? Looks nice!

darleneconnor · 11/01/2011 18:59

Is that Tinto?

Bideyin · 11/01/2011 18:59

Is that Tinto nuigirl?

kirmcc · 11/01/2011 19:00

yep thats on my list aswell:)

where did you find out about the visits? i'm worried that he'll miss out on them

suzikettles · 11/01/2011 19:02

Oh I hear you nulgirl. I've just booked off all my annual leave for next year based on school holidays and as our A/L year runs Apr-Mar I've not had to take Easter & Summer hols into account.

Most of the Glasgow schools seem to have some sort of before/after school club associated with them from what I can see.

I'm also hoping that ds and his grandparents in Edinburgh will enjoy spending rather more time together than they're used to in the future (like a week at Easter and the Summer maybe..)

Good job I am not trying to be all mysterious then. Yes it is Tinto. My dd is at Shawbridge nursery which we love but will be even better when we can open our front door and see the school. Unfortunately most of her good friends are going to langside or shawlands.

suzikettles · 11/01/2011 19:07

kirmcc re: the visits, I'm just going by the Hillhead Primary Handbook which I found on the council website. Will look for it for you.

It was last year's but I'm assuming that there will be a similar thing happening this year.

Bideyin · 11/01/2011 19:07

My goodness you must live very near me. We are actually in Tinto catchment but ds2 goes to Langside (p1). Was really keen on Tinto until I went to register him and heard 2 separate teachers shouting really really loudly at kids.

suzikettles · 11/01/2011 19:08

Here it is

I presume as the Hillhead HM is moving to the new school (that's right isn't it CD?) that most of the procedures will be similar.

OP posts:
nulgirl · 11/01/2011 19:18

Ooh bideyin. That's not encouraging about Tinto. I have always been very happy with Shawbridge even though it looks like something straight out of a warzone and has a very deprived catchment area. I haven't looked anywhere else as I was very keen to go to the local school. Dd is quite placid and well behaved (at nursery anyway) so I figured she would be fine anywhere.

Not being nosy but where do you live (roughly) in relation to the school?

CommanderDrool · 11/01/2011 19:18

Yes. Just phone Hillhead Primary and they will give you all the info. We will have to make a placing request so fingers crossed DD2 gets in.

They are finalising the new school uniform and school crest. All very exciting. DD1 wants a shirt/tie/blazer combo as she thinks the Glasgow Academy students are very smart Hmm

Bideyin · 11/01/2011 19:18

Although I'm not sure that we made the right decision? ds2 loves school but it is very very 'rigid' in it's approach.
