...
Wieder flattern durch die Lüfte
Süße, wohlbekannte Düfte
Streifen ahnungsvoll das Land
Veilchen träumen schon,
Wollen balde kommen
Horch, von fern ein leiser Harfenton!
Frühling, ja du bist's!
Dich hab ich vernommen!

Morning, wet and windy here too. Dd will probably be ill if she gets soaked like yesterday again.

I ended up getting a load of different marzipan eggs for home, they all like marzipan so that's done with! Speaking of food - isn't it strange how chinese isn't the same in UK an dGermany? Here when you order sweet and sour it tastes totalyl different to UK. They also don't seem to have water chestnuts over here ot atleast not in the restaurants we've tried. That's my favourite chinese vegetable, they have plenty of bamboo shoots and chinese mushrooms but no water chestnuts. In France Chinese food tasted different again.

hupa · 24/03/2009 09:29

Morning everyone - wow this thread moves quickly at the moment. We had a couple of centimetres of snow this morning, but it´s all gone now.

abroadandmisunderstood - you know we´re all dying to hear how it went on Friday. What did you do in the end? Was there a piano in the hall?

I`ve found that aswell with the Chinese food admylin. Mind you I´m not too keen on Chinese, but would love to have an Indian take away close by.

abroadandmisunderstood · 24/03/2009 09:37

Oh it was a distasterous night. I baked 25 scones and got all glammed up.

Walked the half hour there and found the building shut, dark, noone there. I rang the doorbells, looked for a sign to say it was cancelled...nothing.

I then went around every school hall and church in the town centre but no sign. I checked the leaflet about the evening and I definitely had the right day.

So, after almost an hour in the cold dark night, I went to the local garage (only place open), bought a bottle of wine and a pack of crisps. WEnt home and cried in front of DH, who didn't know how to react at all, then went upstairs and watched a dreadful Billie Piper mystery on TV.

hupa · 24/03/2009 09:41

That´s awful. All that effort for nothing. Have you found out since why it didn´t take place? I hope you´ve consolled yourself since then, by eating your way through the scones.

Gracelo · 24/03/2009 09:43

Chinese isn't the same in the US or NZ as in GB either. The most striking difference was Thai food for me. I loved it in NZ and there were some fabulous Thai restaurants in Portland but I'm more than meh about the UK or German Thai restaurants that I know.
I doubt there will be an Indian or Chinese take away in the Rhoen, Canella. You might have to go to Wuerzburg for any more exotic ingredients if you want to make it yourself. I have bought microwavable poppadoms in Germany before. I can ask my cousin if there is a good place in the Rhoen for Asian food or ingredients but she is probably more knowledgable when it comes to all things "oeko" and wholemeal.
I have seen water chestnuts in supermarkets in Wuerzburg, so I would think you get them everywhere. Does Hanover not have a big market hall? I remember my brother talking about some place where he goes often for lunch that has all kinds of international ingredients and food stalls.
Taipo, there is some nice Scottish food, there certainly is fantastic produce, especially meat and sea food but many restaurants are a real let down. We are in a very touristy area and there is barely a restaurant one could recommend without any reservations about it. And the next time a waiter serves me a drink holding the glass on the rim I will actually complain, maybe...

abroadandmisunderstood · 24/03/2009 09:45

I attempted to eat all the scones (as the two boys are allergic to strawberries) but felt guilty after the first 8 (they were mini bitesize ones). The cream had started to go off too, so into the bin they went.

I don't know what happened and haven't seen the one lady I know who would be able to tell me. I bet I had to apply to go - fill in a few forms!!

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 09:55

Hi there everyone.

What a letdown aam. How strange. Wonder what happened. Have been waiting with baited breath to hear about your exploits. Can you not have an English conversation class one morning a week at your place? That might be a nice way to meet some new people. I've seen things like that advertised in libraries and cafes etc.

What is caro? Am I missing something? We're real foodies on this thread, aren't we? What I enjoy in Germany is the Thai food. Plenty of really good Thai restaurants but after dd threw up a trail right through one from our table to the bathroom, I have reluctantly given that up. Too spicey for her I think

taipo · 24/03/2009 09:55

Oh, sorry to hear that abroadandmisunderstood. What a let down after you'd psyched yourself up to go there.

Gracelo, definitely complain - that's pretty revolting when you think about it. I'm useless at complaining though, much too English for my own good.

I'm not overly keen on Chinese food although I do miss going to eat dim sum at lunchtime in Hong Kong. What I really miss is a good curry. We went to an Indian restaurant in our town recently and I ordered a lamb curry which I asked to made 'mittelscharf', not wanting to blow my head off. What I got was basically a lamb stew which had no detectable curry spices in it. After we'd eaten the Indian chef came over and started telling us how he can't eat spicy food anymore - after 20 years in Germany it doesn't agree with him any more!

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 09:56

ha ha ha crossed posts on the Thai food Gracelo!

taipo · 24/03/2009 10:01

ZZZen, Caro is basically a coffee substitute made with barley and chicory (I think). It doesn't really taste anything like coffee but I like it as I'm not a big coffee drinker anyway.

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 10:04

thanks taipo not sure about barley and chicory, doesn't sound appealing but then I might just try it. i do want to kick the coffee habit.

taipo · 24/03/2009 10:05

Actually I really like German food if it's done well. Usually it's the sauce that is a let down at many restaurants, often very gloupy and salty and most probably straight from a packet.

admylin · 24/03/2009 10:05

I'm the only one not craving for a curry by the sound of it! We have curry every day in this house, well I do one to last 2 or 3 days - 2 if we eat it and 3 if it's just h eating it. I've just cooked lamb biryani so that's the cooking done with for the next 2 days. I hate standing in the kitchen slaving over the cooker for it all to be eaten within 5 minutes so I do it in batches instead!

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 10:06

my dad makes a mean curry actually but it simmers away for a couple of days I think

I've never tried

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 10:08

I like Lebanese food actually but haven't eaten any for SO long. My mum had a great friend from Lebanon who'd cook up amazing food. i think she was stuck in her kitchen from morning till night really. She put a huge amount of effort into making a whole pile of different things and it was all absolutely delicious

ZZZen · 24/03/2009 10:08

I seem to use the word "actually" an awful lot

taipo · 24/03/2009 10:11

ZZZen, so do I

Oo yes, I love Lebanese food too. In fact, any Mediterranean food.

abroadandmisunderstood · 24/03/2009 10:13

oh I miss good curry restaurants too. I would LOVE to have an Indian takeaway in our town. I tend to make curries myself (I am half Sri Lankan so spices and curries are in my blood). In fact just talking about them make me crave them.

admylin · 24/03/2009 10:28

Sri lankan curry spice is HOT! H had a colleague in south Germany and he brought us some Sri lankan curry spice - honestly half a teaspoon in a pan of curry made it too hot for us!

Gracelo · 24/03/2009 10:39

I get quite irritated by the term "Asia Kueche" that you read all the time in German magazines. Has none of the authors ever looked at a map to see how big and diverse Asia is? I can't stand how in those recipes they put some coriander or ginger or coconut cream in and call it "Asia cooking". On a German parenting site in the cooking and baking board someone asked for Chinese recipes and all the suggestions contained curry powder or coconut. I got close to posting a rant on that thread. I'm not sure why I get quite so worked up about this though
We got Caro at home when we were too young to have proper coffee. I liked it but I havn't had it for decades now.

I'm filling in the school uniform (or unicorn as dd called it, she will be so disappointed) order for dd who starts school in August. How many of everything do I need? I have no experience with school uniforms. Will 5 T-shirts do? And what's the difference between "jog pants" and "exercise pants"?

canella · 24/03/2009 10:41

oh all this talk of food is making my mouth water!!will have to make visitors come with a supply of things i'm craving!!
havent been to wuerzburg yet gracelo - my dh seems to have worked a lot since i got here - last sat was the first day he'd had totally off!! but he's off this weekend so it might be worth a trip!!
Just been to the shops and stopped at the playpark on the way home - i know i need to get used to the cold but it was snowing after 5 mins so i made them come home!!! but now the suns cracking the flags!! what is this weeks weather all about!!
i'm off to dream about curry again

admylin · 24/03/2009 10:46

My dd would love to have the primary school uniform her cousins have. They have a polo shirt and a sweatshirt and she loves it as it's so soft (her words)! How much do you think it all comes to in the end?

I remember seeing a list for secondary, even down to the dark coloured knickers for sport, tennis skirt and hockey boots with studs on, blazer with school emblem on - must cost a fortune when you have to get it all in one blow.

admylin · 24/03/2009 10:48

I know this is probably just another of my 'issues' but tell me what you think of this habit that h has

Gracelo · 24/03/2009 10:53

I have a choice of T-shirts (4.25), Polo shirts (5.25) sweat shirt (with logo, 8.50) fleece (11.95) all in either white or blue, jog pants (8.00) and exercise pants in micro fibre (10.50), also wooly hat or Baseball cap.
I'm not sure about sizes either, sizes are 3-4, 5-6 or 7-8. She'll be 5 in September but she is surprisingly petite for someone with a 6 foot mother.

admylin · 24/03/2009 11:08

it's just started snowing here, porr dd it couldn't get any worse than this to be having a week at Freiluftschule.
