Where's Cali? Is she still entertaining?

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 02:52

I think she said that her company was there for 2 weeks.

I forgot, I thought of her today. We were at Borders, and they had a book called I (heart) geeks, the instruction manual. It made me laugh.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 03:01

Not really paying attention so I can't remember who was starting a garden/lot but Last year was our first year here and although I planted a lot from seed, I got great results from the plants from Walmart that come in peat pots that you plant straight in the ground. I also found that the things that were available in pots gave a good indication of what actually grew well in your area. Also corn only grows well when you plant a group together not random seeds put in my flower beds by my ds.

SuperBunny · 17/01/2009 03:04

My corn didn't grow at all. And I live in the midwest - all you get round here is corn.

OP posts:
dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 03:23

Yes, I planted a group really close together and the middle plants gave us some corn; The ones round the outside seem to protect them and they don't grow so high. That's the same with the ones in the fields here where the ones round the edge are shorter. I did decide it would be easier to pinch a few from the fields around our home though.
Tomatoes worked really well in the midwest as did my peppers, chilies and peas. I'm going to grow leeks this year as they are not always easy to find. Salad was a no-brainer obviously. We tried melons and squash but I think I didn't water them enough. I loved how well my bedding plants grew compared with waterlogged Scotland. I'm thinking of growing some lobelia (blue) and Alysum (white) in the shape of the Scottish flag in our front "Yard" this summer. Is that Weird?

SuperBunny · 17/01/2009 03:27

No, it's lovely! My leeks were great. I'll definitely grow them again.

Thanks everyone, feel bit better reading your comments - superbunny, agree there are far worse drivers over here from what I have seen!

Dodgy - all set for the birth? Ermmmmm

Parents arriving on 26th, hoping baby will hang on in there til they arrive so dont have to panic about who looks after 2yo DS.

dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 03:39

Hope baby hangs on until then.

On a different note, a two year age gap is beyond lovely.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 03:39

Did you start them inside? what time of year? I paid a fortune for them because dd wanted them with CHristmas dinner.

Would any of you do a pole dancing class? It's supposed to be a great workout. I thought I was too old but she has a student who is 61 so I would hope I could do what she can. Do you know the strangest part of the whole story? I met the lady at church!

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 03:46

Ok I need to explain that. I was replying to SBs comment about leeks not ALs comments about babies!!!
My two babies are two years and 8 months apart - they get on great and at least you don't have to carry two people!

kickassangel · 17/01/2009 04:05

about to post & run - dh is hassling me to go to bed. do you think i should try growing a bed in the pattern of the union jack perhaps a tad too obvious. i have a south facing slope with a road going past, so lots of people would see it!

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 04:12

Try my lobelia and alysum with some begonias!!
I fly my Scotland flag with pride (I never dreamed of flying a flag in Scotland but everyone has their flag out here!)so why not do the flowers. it makes it easier to give directions to all the friends you are going to meet!@!!!
{The first time our babysitter came round I told her that we had a Scottish flag out side and she went to our neighbour who has a Steelers flag outside - ffs}

SB - dh is talking about a weekend in Chicago for his birthday in March. If you are free, do you fancy a coffee?

dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 04:20

At the rate she's going, SB is going to be the most popular one on this thread, since she will have met a lot of the people on it.

I got a kitchen scale today. I named it Frank, and I love it. I didn't need it to cook anything, but keep turning it on and weighing things in pounds and then kilos.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 04:31

I would be lost without my kitchen scales but mainly because I do a lot of Nigella which I think is actually a homesick thing (what's more British than Nigella?).
My daughter had a math(s) assignment where she had to bring in a recipe that used volumes such as cups etc and the only recipe I could find that didn't have grams etc was for a cocktail. I think it explains the school's attitude to me {hmm}.

Have you tried Nigella's recipe for involtini? THE best vegetarian meal I have ever cooked!

Frank is a great name for it. My Kitchenaid mixer I got for my birthday is called Marjory.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 04:32

My bathroon scales are a bit too frank.

dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 04:43

Dodgy.

I really haven't been able to name my Kitchen Aid. I worship it, but have to much reverence to name it. I do call my food processor Ah-nuld, after the Governator, because it is so powerful. It really looks more like a Sid, though.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 04:50

I left my good food processor in the uk and I have a poor relation at the moment. It does the basics but tbh I don't even take it out unless I really need it as i can usually do it better by hand. Of course this means dh thinks that that means a good food processor is not needed.
Im going to buy one with my pole dancing money - see new job. ^

dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 04:53

Tell your DH I said he's wrong.

I saw your pole dancing thing. I don't think I'd have the guts, as the graceful gene has totally bypassed my family altogether. Unfortunately, that includes both my children, also.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 05:03

Im too scared to do the pole dancing. Im doing some kind of yoga/aerobics thing with her but reading about all the exciting things other people do. I don't envy them one bit but its like gossip girl on acid.

My dd does dancing and is actually very good -she is doing national comps this year - but she still falls over her feet regularly.

nooka · 17/01/2009 05:05

My Kenwood sits in the corner and gets used very rarely, as I haven't gotten around to buying a step-up transformer for it. I've never considered giving it a name. That's dh's department. I have to admit I thought it was a geek thing! All our computers have names (which I get mixed up), and it was a struggle to avoid the car and my truck ending up with names too.

dodgykeeper · 17/01/2009 05:14

I don't name my computers unless you count "You BASx*%$" My car is like one of my children so although it doesn't have a name, I talk to it all the time - "OOOoohhh don't do that now!!!!!!!"
Marjory says he has issues with her and my coffee maker, Carl.

dooneygirl · 17/01/2009 05:15

I don't name my computer, because it is just a computer, but I'm afraid my naming things only proves it is a geek thing.

nooka · 17/01/2009 06:04

Lol. I am probably insufficiently imaginative . I tend to be quite happy with my truck, my PC, the iMac etc. I find that I don't tend to personalise things much. I do occasionally try, but when I was clearing my office of five years I found that although I had brought in pictures of the children at some point - I think I'd read that not having pictures meant you were psychotic or something - they were years out of date and I hadn't noticed! They were nice pictures at least

never occurred to me to name appliances! i brought over my magimix, dyson & bread maker. just couldn't live without them & too expensive/not available in the states. we have one step-up transformer big enough to make the beasts wrok, it also does the treadmill, so i can either make bread, chop veg, vacuum, or go on treadmill. hmm, treadmill doesn't seem to get much use!
vacuuming is a real pita, having to carry the big grey box around with it, but i love my dyson too much to go without.
