Now what does the phrase "my bad" mean? It seems so truncated. My bad what I always think!

jabberwocky · 17/02/2009 01:13

"my bad" = "my mistake not yours"

I am here! Well, in DC with dh and dcs. Having a lovely time despite the cold . Just back from catching up with old friends whose dd was my ds1's best buddy in a previous life. Now they are 12 and 11 and will barely give each other the time of day.

SuperBunny · 17/02/2009 03:39

Winter? Rofl

Talk of rain and Toad in the Hole made me a bit homesick. Please tell me in great detail about your supper. Was there lashings of gravy?

Welcome, tangarine. How is DC? Go to the zoo!

alipiggie · 17/02/2009 03:54

Second SB ROFL. Come over to Colorado CF. Then you'll know what Winter's really like. Actually though today it was more springlike. SB I hate to tell you but I made Yorkshire Pud yesterday with onion gravy too. Slurped it down we did. Other than a very moving/sad memorial service attended on Thursday and a day off on Friday life's been busy round of playdates and fun in this house. I need the rest of the week in work to recover.

nooka · 17/02/2009 04:54

I can't remember the last time it rained here! We are still surrounded by snow and ice. dh and I had a curry today. It's been over a year! It wasn't quite right, but nice all the same

Wait! Cali, you had mash without gravy?

When's Anorak going to Boston? Is it the end of this month or next? Is she ok?

peasoup · 17/02/2009 15:45

Hi, I am not living in the U.S., but I have done in the past, as a child, and I REALLY want to again. Wondered if you lot had any advice for me on how to achieve this.
Both DH and I are self employed and both of us do the kind of thing that we could set up wherever we were as long as there were folks with cash, so to speak. I do stuff to interiors, specialist high end, luxury end of the interiors market.
As we're both self employed, are there visas to allow us to work Stateside? I thought there might be the ability for foreigners to work self employed there as we are not taking anyone's job off them by being there, IYKWM.
I thought I had heard if you had a certain amount of money in the bank then they would allow you in to set up your own business, but not sure where I read that, or if I just dreamed it . If we sold up here we might have enough wonga to qualify.
We just really fancy living elsewhere before DS starts school when we may then end up stuck in one place. He's 3. We were living abroad before he came along, so we are used to upping sticks and starting in a foreign land. Also i lived in the US as a kid and have friends I visit quite a bit near San Fransisco, in Santa Cruz. I do like that area, though I'm open to trying others if the opportunities are there. I had a friend who did similar stuff to me in san Fransisco so it looks like there's a market for it there. She has since moved back to the UK, so I could step into her shoes maybe! (she managed to work there as she was married to an American) Any info or advice gratefully received.

SuperBunny · 17/02/2009 18:19

Yuck from me too

Peasoup, I hate to piss on your bonfire but it sounds unlikely to me. Visas are not easy to come by but perhaps you are right - the American embassy has info and there might be something for self-employed people.

scienceteacher · 17/02/2009 18:43

Do you have a million dollars to invest in the US, peasoup?

Look at the visa categories on www.usembassy.org.uk

peasoup · 17/02/2009 22:32

LOL at pissing on my bonfire SuperBun! I haven't even built it yet, so don't worry about pissing on it. These are my first tentative enquiries. Lots of good info on that US embassy website thanks Science Teach
No, I don't have a million dollars, but there's lots of info about allowing you in on a temporary basis to run a business (2 to 5 years). They sound like they'd be more into it if you were gonna employ Americans which we will. Anyway, I'll have fun looking into it and dreaming, and meantime might do a trip out to Fact Find. So I may end up asking you lot about good stuff to do with a three year old in the Bay area.

peasoup · 17/02/2009 22:35

BTW sorry for having interrupted the "gravy" discussion

Hello!
Been awol for a while and then totally thrown by the changes on the site - doesn't take much these days. Congrats AL - hope you and the little laddie are still doing well.
ds had a 100 day party at school today - is this normal? They seem to have lots of parties; Valentines was just on Friday FFS. Every child had to give a valentine to every other child in the class which I suppose is fair enough, but my ds debated with me all week about how lying was wrong but he still had to give a card saying "you're a great friend!" to a boy who called him "poohead" on the bus. After much discussion, we found one that said "you're quite something!" which we both felt redressed the balance somewhat.
BTW the cocacola ham is really goooood! I love Nigella.

tangarine · 18/02/2009 00:50

Hi Superbunny, thanks for the welcome.

We had a fab day at the Newseum today - dh is going to take dcs to the zoo tomorrow or Thursday as I'm off to NYC for a couple of days to stay with the colleague I'm replacing in [scared face] less than 6 weeks.

peasoup - I'm about to move out to New York. Dh already lives in DC. We both work for an international organisation, and this was the closest we could get to 2 jobs in the same place at the same time. I'm afraid I don't know much about the visa situation as ours have been organised via our employers, but I have been told that the downturn is hitting quite hard in NYC. Was talking to someone yesterday who is in PR, most of whose clients have put things on hold, as well as a lawyer who is also feeling the pinch as his clients only call him when they really need him, whereas before the downturn they called him even if they didn't really need him just to be on the safe side. I think you'd need to research your potential market carefully.

100 Day parties are the norm here. Ds2 got to do an amazing 100 pixo picture. And before you groan - he did them all himself, then came home with a 100 different snacky things in a ziplock bag. Was a great day. Valentine's party much more fun. DS2 got 15 cards from the same girl - should I worry do you think .

Hope everyone's keeping well. Trip to Dr today with DS1 - croupy cough, but nothing major. Healthy in fact yeah. But another day at home for mum sigh.

SuperBunny · 18/02/2009 05:15

Dodgy! Hello lol @ 'you're quite something' Perfect!

I remember Cali's DS with 100 stones.

Which Newseum were you at, tangerine?

I am pleased to announce that Dinner is getting into Dinosaurs. This is good because it is something I can get excited about. Lego bores me after a couple of minutes but real animals are fascinating.

Hmmm...maybe I should just be dreaming of a VERY long holiday in the States, rather than working. I'm going to look into the ins and outs of it though. I wonder if I got a commission to do work on a particlular house, would I be allowed to come in and work on that one project (I've got a client in London who also has a house in California) Just dying to get a bit of a change going on; been in London three years now. Thanks for all your advice, gloomy as it is

tangarine · 18/02/2009 14:06

Newseum in DC, Superbunny. I think it's quite recently reopened.

Watching the snow out of the window and hoping that the Arcela will still be running - am used to British trains stopping at the slightest excuse.
