It's 15 degrees! We went to the park without coats. Everyone was there - it's almost as if everyone has come out of hibernation.

It's snowing here! And they actually managed to send the kids to school!

kickassangel · 10/02/2009 22:36

warm here as well. nearly all the snow gone & been out with dd to the park today!!
this, however, is meant to be the 'january thaw' with colder weather due again next week, and thunderstorms tomorrow.
oh well, we had one day of sunshine!

SuperBunny · 11/02/2009 01:06

I took DS and his friends to the park this afternoon. He sat in the sandbox and played with three 2nd grade girls. When I moved away to help another child, one of the girls said to Dinner, "You can't play here, it's only for black kids" and

I sat back down next to DS and the girl said to me, "Is this your son? because you need to talk to him - he's talking about segregation" He's 3 ffs, he has no idea what that is. To him, children are children - he doesn't care what they look like or how old they are - all children are potential playmates. He said, "She says I can't play here because it's only for black kids" so I told him (and the others) that it was nonsense and they could all play wherever they liked. The girl looked away and her friends yelled, "She said it, not us! We're innocent!" I asked her name and I know what school she goes to. Would it be wrong to contact the school about it? She was there as part of an after school program. I am so pissed off that this is DS's first experience of racial differences. He's never even mentioned that some people look different to him. Grr

I made the Nigella cola ham today. It didn't taste like I expected, but was really good. I can't wait to make other dinners with the leftover ham. Colin told me how much he liked it 2 times, and told me I could make it again. He even had seconds, even though it meant he might not have room for the cheesecake I made for dessert.

I realize that doesn't fit in with the racism post. Did you know Portland is the 4th "whitest" city in the US? And it is even more so for the 'burbs. I have no experience with that whatsoever.

dooney

Ds1 says that we are orange Made me wonder about the self tanner I used one summer

SuperBunny · 11/02/2009 03:04

The thing is, we live in a very multicultural neighbourhood but the schools do not reflect that. Anyway, will contact the school. Thanks for the input. I still feel outraged.

Jabber (or anyone else) - do you know anything about Spiral Scouts?

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 11/02/2009 13:57

I've heard of Rainbow Scouts. Is it the same thing?

jabberwocky · 13/02/2009 23:00
SuperBunny · 14/02/2009 03:35

Spiral Scouts is like normal scouts but is not gender specific and is based on Earth reverent/ Pagan principles so activities tend to be based on the seasons, taking care of the environment etc but it doesn't teach religion. I am helping set up a group here but wondered if anyone knew anything about it as I know very little

jabberwocky · 14/02/2009 04:04

oh, maybe it's spiral scouts I've heard of then. Sounds really nice. I think they had a branch (?) in TN

dooneygirl · 14/02/2009 04:46

Hi. I have nothing meaningful to say. Just keeping this on my threads I'm on list.

nooka · 14/02/2009 04:54

My ds has just started Cubs, and I was a bit worried about the religion thing. However they seem to mostly play games that they aren't allowed at school (DodgeBall) and have demonstrations. Last week they went sledging, which apparently counted as the Winter badge (I didn't see any plant, bird or star identification going on - just lots of slightly crazy floodlit sledding )

SuperBunny · 14/02/2009 05:01

I want a badge for sledding!

Are the new babies ok? And their mums?

Lol. I've got to sew it on his new sash now. Maybe I'll get him to do it, and then he can have a sewing badge too this weekend we have to make a "Kub kar" out of a block of wood, some wooden wheels and four nails. I have no tools anymore (gave them all away when we left the UK), and they seem to expect a very expert finish (although all to be done by ds ) so I guess I'll be visiting the neighbours!

I hope the new parents and babies are well too

SuperBunny · 14/02/2009 16:49

Sounds interesting, Nooka. Apparently our local Home Depot does children's workshops on Saturday mornings, where they make boats and cars and rockets and things out of a few bits of wood and some nails. It looks like fun.
