looking through this list, are there any places where people think 'wow, wish i could live there?'

nyc & boston tempt me. i may be going to a friend's wedding in trinidad later this year.

SuperBunny · 10/01/2009 03:27

"Where seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day"

They have obviously not been to Chicago!

Fab song, thanks for the link. And for not knowing it before.

Oregon! But only because I've been there and loved it.

I lived midway between Boston and NYC but probably wouldn't chose to live in either place (unless I had plenty of money).

I'd honestly pick Chicago. Good thing, I suppose.

i've heard chicago is nice. we're planning to visit there once winter's over, i think it's about 4 hours from us?

how much snow have you got? we've only got about 2" atm, but mor due overnight. the worst is meant to be s of i94, we're about a mile n of it, so hoping to get a decent amount & go sledding 2moro. the novelty still hasn't warn off yet

kickassangel · 10/01/2009 03:34

btw, i once spent a term at college near albany, ny. loved boston when i visited, but yes, you'd have to have a lot of money to be able to really enjoy it.

SuperBunny · 10/01/2009 03:41

Chicago is great! Dooney can give you a less biased opinion. Definitely wait til the weather is better. I'm not sure how far it is - about 4 hrs sounds right.

We have about 6", I guess. We went sledding today but the snow was too powdery and the front of the sled kept getting stuck. It's too powdery for snowmen and snowballs too so we just rolled in it and made snow angels

Have fun with your sleds!

When I was younger, I would have killed to live in NYC. Now, if I were rich, I'd pick Boston. But I'm not, so I'd actually pick Chicago, because there were some nice suburbs there that weren't much more expensive than here. I seem to like space and land in my old age, and living in a big city proper doesn't appeal to me at all.

Oregon seems like an odd pick, but the more I think about it, it is a really good place to live. If I could move my family somewhere else, I think I'd enjoy it more. Not that I really see that much of them.

I made fresh pasta today. It was really good. Like really, really good.

nooka · 10/01/2009 05:05

Although we were very sad to leave NYC, I wouldn't choose to move back there. We really wanted to live in Maine when we visited there (the trigger, although long delayed of our current adventure), but I don't think we would have been able to get good enough jobs there, as both me and dh are a bit corporate. We did like Chicago. Landscape wise we liked Northwest Pen.

dooneygirl · 10/01/2009 05:11

I agree with you on that nooka, it is beautiful. And so unexpected, too. At least for me.

We really liked Maine/NH when we were back there last year, too. I could tell I'd have a hard time fitting in if we lived in Maine, too.

SuperBunny · 10/01/2009 17:01

&@#@*# snow

I've never been to Maine. I shoulda.

Aha - found you all!

What's everyone doing today?

We're shortly off on an afternoon run of birthday parties and then a sleepover for dd. Sleepovers are a relatively new thing, and it always feels odd when she is away for the night. But, I'm going out to supper with friends, so should be fun.

bran · 10/01/2009 17:29

Can I ask a silly question please (you can be patronising if you like, I don't mind ). What state does MadameDeathStare live in? I can only think of Alaska for AL, but that's not in the South.

madwomanintheattic · 10/01/2009 17:30

I'm moving to AB CA in august - i'll pop back then lol x

nooka · 10/01/2009 18:16

I think AL is Alabama. Alaska is AK

mananny · 10/01/2009 18:24

Boston is Fabulous. But very expensive. I am panicking about rent and school and keeping myself alive for the next 4 years here.

bran · 10/01/2009 19:07

Of course it's Alabama. Thanks for not sneering.

anorak · 10/01/2009 19:14

Hello all!

We're chilling today. Tonight I am going to a comedy show with DH.

nooka · 10/01/2009 19:22

Why should I sneer? I don't know why the US uses a scheme with only two letters, some of the initials are not exactly intuitive, and there are loads of states that share the same first letter (nine beginning with M for example). We stayed in this rather odd B&B recently, listed as "child friendly" (what this meant was they were happy for children to stay there, not that they were friendly!). They had a range of games in the shared living room, either very very educational, or bible based. We attempted to play some sort of bingo to match states to their initials, and all failed miserably!

kickassangel · 10/01/2009 19:22

DOONEY what flour did you use to make pasta? we just got a pasta machine & it says to use oo grade durum wheat. yeah, right. without walking all the way to italy that's not gonna happen. so, what flour did you use?

kickassangel · 10/01/2009 19:24

do you all get the ads for 'which university did you garduate from?' with all the states listed. dh & i went through them the other night. we forgot about indiana. however, i stil get some of the a, m & w ones confused unless i have them all listed.

just to put this in context, my degree (20 years ago) was in american studies, so really i should know

jabberwocky · 10/01/2009 20:24

lol, people are always putting AK for Arkansas instead of AR. It was sooo much easier with the old abbreviations. Arkansas was Ark, Texas was Tex, etc. I think California was even Calif. All that changed back in the '70's with the new zip code system.

nooka · 10/01/2009 22:10

jabberwocky, so this is the modern way huh? That does seem silly. Three letters gives much more scope when you have 50 states.
