Thanks Gabster for the inspiration for the thread!

Add your resolutions here & I can slip alongside and pretend I'll make some too.
Still too fragile - my sleep patterns go haywire when I'm home, stay up till 1 or 2am, then awake at 5am (6 here, usual flipping school time) then I come back & keep crashing on the sofa at 10pm and wake up at 4 bright & breezy.

We have snow, very pretty and h is off till Weds so am pushing him out for Streupflicht, bartered it for a fry-up with real English bacon, hmmmmmm.
Forecast is for -12C to -14C tonight - and when the children go back to school on Thursday. Yikes.

welcome cheeky chocky!

Nah can't handle that mild and Koffeinfrei stuff, tastes like dishwater (not that I'm in the habit of drinking that yet!)

I tried Koffeinfrei but it was so runny and tasteless , it didn't do the trick. I drink Lavazza. I drink it very strong and maybe 6 (or more if I'm ironing) a day so I really have to break the habit.

I am also going to take up yoga again - starting sometime I find the energy. Had a go at a couple of simple basic asanas and had a heart attack to see how stiff I have become. And soon I will be called BreZZZel, I will be so think and twisty.

Wait and see girls, wait and see...

ZZZen · 28/01/2009 11:49

I will be THIN , thin thin thin

and not thinK

It seems so impossible, my fingers refuse to type it even

admylin · 28/01/2009 11:49

Mmmm, Lavazza is nice too! In the USA I was so surprised to be served thin watery coffee everywhere. I always thought of them having thick black coffee somehow.

admylin · 28/01/2009 11:53

The key is to only buy apples and carrots and not let any chocolate or crisps in the house.

Sigh, dd begged and begged me to buy ice-cream (but 2 different sorts) and cream and raspberry sauce for today as I've had them on a healthy mission while I've been ill, lots of pears, grapes, apples etc and she was just in need of cream and sweet stuff! Ds has requested a chocolate cake - he doesn't eat much anyway so I can't refuse. Now I've got all those temptations in the house.

MmeLindt · 28/01/2009 11:56

We have a Nespresso machine and I like the decaff stuff, I cannot tell the difference.

LOL at BreZZZel

ZZZen · 28/01/2009 12:11

I like fruit, generally eat a lot of it but it doesn't fill you up, does it, the way say potatoes or bread would. I need something more substantial.

Actually I like those little Fincrisps but I always plonk a thick layer of butter and some Danish blue cheese or brie on them which I think defeats the purpose

admylin · 28/01/2009 12:16

My neighbour is doing a diet at the moment where she can eat anything at breakfast and lunch time but in the evening she can only eat certain fruit and veg and meat but no carbs at all, carrots and sweetcorn are also out for some reason. At the weekend she came down as the dc were eating together (her dsd was on a visit) and the dc had hot dogs and pasta salad but she brought a big plate of tuna fish, chopped tomatoes, radish and yoghurt dressing. Looked quite filling.

ZZZen · 28/01/2009 12:22

tbh I think it doesn't matter too much what you eat so long as it isn't junk and you eat less of it than you think you actually need. I think most of us just got into the habit of over-eating.

Well we will see, I aim to be 7 kilos lighter by Easter. Let's see if it happens!

ZZZen · 28/01/2009 12:26

Finks is very quiet, isn't she? Does she have school holidays already? When do yours start admylin?

Gipfeli · 29/01/2009 10:12

Hello all,

I wonder if I might hijack your thread for a minute to ask what the words "dribble" (as in what babies do, rather than football skills) and "fidget" (as in what small boys do in Kindergarten instead of paying attention!) are in German.

And if you happen to know what they might be called by the Swiss that would be even better

Thank you

admylin · 29/01/2009 10:33

to dribble is sabbern

to fidget is zappeln

not sure about the double b and p though

ZZZen · 29/01/2009 11:11

Hi Gipfeli, it's an open thread and everyone is welcome

So WILKOMMEN, I agree with admylin but don't know what mysterious things the Swiss do to those verbs. LIZS might know, didn't she live in the German speaking part of Switzerland for a while?

admylin · 29/01/2009 11:20

If they use those verbs they probably pronounce them differently to German! I can never understand Swiss-German on the Swiss channel.

MmeLindt · 29/01/2009 11:46

Hi Gipfeli, nice to see you here. I agree with Admylin but also have no idea of the Swiss-German.

Lisz might know, or perhaps Gorionine, but then she is from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, not sure if she speaks Schwiss-German.

I am taking DS to the Natural History Museum this afternoon with his school. DD was there last week and loved it.

Still fasting, will probably do today and tomorrow and start eating again at the weekend. I will have to go slow for the first few days anyway. No fondue for me

Gipfeli · 29/01/2009 11:51

Thank you.

I shall use those, when I speak about ds and all will be fine as I know I will be understood. And because I've used those I will then get "Standardsprache" rather than Schwyzerdütsch in reply, so I may have a chance of understanding it.

[Actually I shall probably get in a reply in English but there we go]

taipo · 29/01/2009 12:16

Hi Gipfeli. Hope things went OK at KG for you. I barely understand a word of Swiss German when they're in full flow.

V. impressed at your fasting ML. Do you feel weak and dizzy at all or more invigorated? A colleague of dh's fasts for a week each year. I think it's quite intriguing but I don't think I'd have the willpower to make it past the first few hours

ZZZen · 29/01/2009 13:31

THey will understand you I'm sure Gipfeli. I can see you now miming out dribble and fidget just to make sure...

Let us know how you got on

I'm very impressed at her fasting taipo. I'm sure it is very purging. I am seriously considering it but must deal with the coffein addiction first.

ErnestTheBavarian · 29/01/2009 14:18

The thing is, gipfeli, you need to say it in high German not swiss german, or they'll assume you can speak swiss german & then you'll be in trouble... best to establish communication in high german or english.

I was 8 years in ch & did learn some swissgerman, 2 dss were fluent, but still v. difficult to learn &now my german is smattered with ch intruders so I reckon sound strange

taipo · 29/01/2009 14:53

How are the caffeine withdrawal symptoms today ZZZen?

I've never been much of a coffee drinker, although I like a proper espresso every now and again. Can't stand German filter coffee so whenever we go to MIL I drink Caro instead. Last time I relented and said I'd have a coffee. MIL was over the moon (I think she actually hugged me!) - it would seem you're not a proper Hausfrau if people won't drink your coffee

Gipfeli · 29/01/2009 14:59

Oh you're absolutely right Ernest. I make a determined effort to stick to the high German and have no truck with all the "schoni wochenendi" business that goes on round here.

ds keeps correcting me though, especially when I count properly

MmeLindt · 29/01/2009 17:22

Ernest
I am just imagining the looks you get when you come away with Swiss-German words where you are. I don't really understand it, I get the gyst of it but that is all.

I have good days and bad days with the fasting, mainly good so far. I will probably stop tomorrow though as I think that I have had enough. I have lost 4kg and am feeling chuffed with myself that I hung on so long.

I think I will wait until tomorrow morning to decide.

hupa · 29/01/2009 17:36

Mme Lindt - congratulations 4kg is loads. You´ve definetley got more will power than me. When is the wedding? - I´m sure you´ve said, but I´ve forgotten.

Dh lived in Zurich for a year before we were married and I really couldn´t understand a word his 2 flat mates said. Mind you he could only understand about 80% and he´s German.

Ernest - did your dh find any possible locations for your return? Hopefully you´ve got a few ideas that you can research more thoroughly.

I´m addicted to coffee. I used to be really good and only drink decaf, but since living in Germany I need a few cups of the real stuff to get me through the day.

MmeLindt · 30/01/2009 06:54

Oooooh, MN is all different this morning. I am scared to venture onto Active Conversations, I am sure there is much frothing at the mouth and wailing going on.

I am eating a lovely breakfast of melon, supposed to be apple for Fastenbrechen but the DC must have eaten the last apples yesterday. Had one wee slice and am full. The fastenwoche was worth it though, I lost 4.6kg

I had a bit of a meltdown yesterday. DS is really doing my head in at the moment. He just does not listen to a thing that anyone says. The teacher who does the lunchtime club and also supply teaching said that he is like that in school too. We have a parents' evening soon so I will see what his normal teacher thinks. I have to arrange a translator to come with us though as his teacher does not speak English.

I am going to email one of DH's colleagues to ask if she will come with us.

Going to go shopping today and buy all sorts of yummy (but healthy!) food.

DD is putting bobbles in the dog's hair. We bathed her this morning and she is looking rather spiffy. Poor dog, she is now going to the "dogdresser"

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/01/2009 07:52

ML, well done on your very impressive weight loss. Tell me more about your detox. I know you named it, but what exatly is it and where did you get it? I wanna copy you.

Agree with you - daren't venture forward on the no-prior-warning-scary-new-look-mumsnet.

gah, the swiss german thing is an insiduous beast. I make so many mistakes in German cos of it, but they're not obviously 'swiss' so people just thik I'm thick I think. eg in CH they never use ß always just ss, so I never know where there 'should be one, as I've never used it, or I say 'velofahren' aaas Inever hear 'Radfahren till I moved here - a lot of swissgerman words are French, or German words, that a German wouldn't use in that context - I've only ever used 'Ferien' so always get strange looks as I should say 'Urlaub' . Oh and Gleichfalls, I always, every time say 'Gliechfalls'. I'll never get my head to undo the CH damage. A lot of it is still undiscovered

Hupa - dh went to UK last weekend and liked some of the places we'd (blindly) picked out. I'm going over for a jolly to check them out next weekend, just me and dd - a whole weekend just me and baby and no housework or responsibilities But considering we started off with a map of SE England, we've managed to narrow it down to about 3 sq miles with lots of internet browsing and some v. useful mumsnetters, so v. pleased

how is everyone this am

admylin · 30/01/2009 08:06

I think they must still be working on the new-mn layout! I tried to customise it as it says you can but it didn't change much.

I thought about trying the mmelindt method of dieting too but then decided I'm slowly getting used to my size and if I ever went back to my pre-dc size I would feel too skinny. I suppose 1 dress size down would be OK but not the end of the world if I stay the way I am. I know aswell, if I lost weight I'd go back to be flat-chested and relying on push-up bras with padding in!
