I just finished the old thread by accident

OP posts:
SuperBunny · 12/09/2008 18:29

I feel quite angry about it too

dooneygirl · 12/09/2008 19:42

I'd like to ask all of you to channel your thoughts for a quick second, and please send vibes in the direction of Southern Oregon to help the In-laws remember that it is DH's birthday today. Please.

As you were.

i hope the mayor in Galveston gets sacked.

you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger eejit.

she didn't order the evacuation until way too late.

there's another guy on khou.com who is in crystal beach with his wife, has refused to leave and said they'd just learn to swim .

am so worried about my sister and the girls i want to retch.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2008 19:47

it is looking VERY bad out there and the storm is actually still about 10 hours away.

dooneygirl · 12/09/2008 19:49

Today. That sounds great, but I'm guessing that it wouldn't be that anonymous, because there's not really that many people who could have inspired it.

That, and the fact that I doubt if either one of them has had a text in their life, and am not sure as to what their reaction would be, TBH.

SuperBunny · 12/09/2008 19:53

Sending vibes, Dooney.

I don't understand these people. I know you think things will never happen to you but you'd think people would remember Katrina. People died It's not the time to not be afraid and to learn to swim I'm so sorry your family are not reassuring you expat. I hope MN Texans are ok.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2008 19:55

oh, they've still got a bunch of numpties standing near the seawall in galveston, waiting to get hit by planks of wood and whatever else gets churned up until the police round them up.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2008 19:56

darwinawardcandidates

dooneygirl · 12/09/2008 20:14

Sorry, I took Colin to school and missed your posts, Expat. I have no words for those people.

You know, it just dawned on me that my sister moved to Texas after getting married, and I think she's in the suburbs of Houston.

alarkaspree · 12/09/2008 21:09

oh expat, how scary for you. I hope your sister will be okay.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2008 21:14

i'd like to throttle this so-called mayor.

she waited till too late to get these folks out.

there are now people who are trapped and can no longer be rescued.

dooneygirl · 12/09/2008 21:28

They've been feeding KHOU on one of the cable news channels, and am at the weather already, and at the mayor saying they would find a way to get people who needed to get to the ER there, even if the streets were closed. Her plan involved dump trucks and "streets we know about".

expatinscotland · 12/09/2008 21:33

and 'we'll be able to help you more after the storm's passed and the city drains.'

i'll bet!

YOUR CITY IS GOING TO BE UNDERWATER, LADY!

SuperBunny · 13/09/2008 00:53

They just showed it on the news again. There are enormous waves and people driving. Not many, only 1 or 2 but, WHY? If you were going to drive somewhere, why do it now? There was enough warning. But perhaps better now than later.

Earlybird · 13/09/2008 03:10

My goodness expat, how terrifying. I heard them say on the weather channel that probably 2/3 of the Galveston population have not evacuated, and that they are now expected by officials to 'ride it out' at home (but maybe that is what most of them want to do anyway?). Please share news of your sister with us as it comes in. Will you be able to sleep tonight?

Everyone 'round here has rushed to fill their cars with petrol today in anticipation of rising prices and shortages. Most places are limiting customers to 10 gallon purchases, and there is some serious price gouging going on.

I realised an hour or so ago that I feel anxious about almost everything atm - this scary and life threatening/life changing storm, a looming presidential election with two candidates I don't want (and each implying the other will be disastrous for the country if elected), the stock market implosion that is decimating retirement funds/college savings plans/investment portfolios (on paper, I've lost alot of money and it may not bounce back if/when the economy recovers), etc etc etc.

It's all heavy going and scary with no lightness or fun. Maybe I need to switch off CNN, go have a glass of wine and soak in the tub....and be grateful that dd and I are healthy and safe.

dooneygirl · 13/09/2008 03:59

I know what you mean about retirement funds/college savings. We're getting hammered too. It really bothered me, but then I guess you just be thankful that you have both those to lose, because so many people we know don't have either, and they're our age or older.

Now if you could find a way for me to stop worrying about global warming. . . .

Thanks for your vibes. They didn't work for FIL and SMIL, but DH's aunt called to wish him a happy birthday (she also called to tell me she had cancer, so she had a lot on her mind) and he's on the phone with his cousin (from a different aunt) that remembered. I was really upset last year, because his mom always remembered, and it was his first birthday without her, and I'm still upset, but not as bad. It wouldn't be so bad, but they always remember mine, and have gotten me presents every year. I know it bothers me much more than him, thought. Like his aunt said, I haven't had that many and they're a big deal to me, and his family just has never been about them.

dooneygirl · 13/09/2008 04:01

though

SuperBunny · 13/09/2008 04:45

That's a good point - the good thing about having nothing is that you have nothing to lose. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Sorry for all the anxiousness. I am also concerned about many many things. Who knew life would be such a worry? It makes me appreciate just how lucky DS is to fret about why there are no more red lego blocks and which feet to put his shoes on. Of course, to him, these are major concerns. Little does he know...

dooneygirl · 13/09/2008 15:52

I see that Ike is supposed to be headed toward Arkansas. Thinking of you, Jabber. I know it got downgraded once it turned inland, but I'm sure anything that big still is something to be watched.

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 15:57

the worst is yet to come from it because it will spawn tornadoes .

SuperBunny · 13/09/2008 16:02

We have flashflood and Tornado warnings.Again. It's rained non-stop for 36 hours, which is really never does. How are your family, expat?

expatinscotland · 13/09/2008 16:03

no word. i can't get through.

Crikey, this weather is terrible. It is still raining. BF's house is flooded. And tomorrow it's meant to get worse (as Ike makes it's way up here). Yet, I am lucky. So lucky.

Hoping your family are safe, expat, and that they make contact soon
