I just finished the old thread by accident

OP posts:

I am sure it isn't easy. Not all lounging around reading. But certainly sounds interesting.

dooneygirl · 28/08/2008 03:18

It must vary by state to state, then, Ali. Here in Oregon, you can only do it for religious reasons. And they don't just blindly accept it, either. Someone at the old preschool I hated (always have to get that in there) that Colin went to tried to use the religious excuse, and someone from the appropriate agency, whoever that was, grilled her about what her religion was, religious beliefs, etc. It became apparent that she had no clue what she was talking about when it came to religion, and her child had to get a pile of shots before they could go to school.

Today was Caitlin's birthday, and she's been singing Happy Birthday to herself all day long. She's told anyone we've come within a few feet of that it is her birfday and she's "tree" today.

I was contemplating the cake making thing today, too. I figured next year I'll get on the ball and go buy the figures they want for their cakes and make them, and it should be cheaper. But the figures alone cost 1/2 the price of what I paid for the cake, and to make a really good cake, it would probably be more than the cost. DH agreed, but said at least it would taste a lot better. Their cakes were much prettier than I could ever have come close to, but boxed cake mix would probably have tasted better.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAITLIN

Sounds like she had a lovely day

Yes, the cake thing is not really cost effective, but I get a smug satisfaction from it

SuperBunny · 28/08/2008 03:47

Dooney, I just had a nosey at your profile. What lovely children

alipiggie · 28/08/2008 04:05

Happy Birthday Caitlin - yeah.

I had an abrasion on my cornea and a severe infection - think Quatermass Experiment - that was my eye . Boack. All better now - hunky Eye Dr told me so.

Glad I live in CO then - thank goodness for exemptions on Personal Grounds - although we're all up-to-date now.

dooneygirl · 28/08/2008 18:18

I got on here to tell you last night how happy the cake picture made her, Cali, but I hit the post message button and the site was down. She clapped her hands and said 3, like me.

SB, I am much more nosey, and looked at your profile long ago, and have to say my, what lovely clouds you have.

Off to Chuck E Cheese!!!! Then home to pack to leave tomorrow for Southern Oregon.

I need to move my pics over to my new name

Califrau - last cake question... when you made the Lego, did you just use the ready to roll fondant icing? Should I be making it? Or using something else?

alarkaspree · 28/08/2008 21:29

I haven't yet resolved the health check dilemma but I have another question...

Is a hot dog from an NY street vendor better or worse than a Greggs sausage roll?

Vax exemptions vary wildly state by state. when we were in TN it was very difficult but just a matter of filling in forms in AR. You should be able to google your state.

Oh, and try the county health dept for school physical.

Cali, yes, I meant for the little lego blocks for the cupcakes. I'm not going to do a big one. Just cupcakes with fondant lego bricks. I'll make the frosting because I always do. Much easier and probably cheaper to buy a can though. So, squide [[http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E30CF4A-475A-BAC0-5F79E9BD5798B946&fid=3E32F5D4-4 75A-BAC0-5ACDEF3C679B08EE this] colour it and poke it into the icecube tray? and leave for a while?

There is a homeschool school here. I don't understand it - if you are homeschooling, why would you send them to a school?

Hotdogs, probably on a par with Greggs, I'm afraid. At least in chicago they come with pickles and sauerkraut and onions so you can pass it off as vegetables.

Just ate another piece of Caitlin's birthday cake. So definitely going to make my own next year. Yuck. I will just have to learn to make pretty food. She even left the cake part of her cake, and only ate the frosting today.

We spent 4 hours at Chuck E. Cheese. All I can say is I really don't like other people's children. I was helping Caitlin play a game, and decided to take a turn myself, and hit the jackpot. So instead of low-end cheap tat, the kids got high-end cheap tat, because even with the jackpot, we still weren't close to getting anything "good".

dooneygirl · 29/08/2008 02:13

I just realized what a total dodohead I am. I cannot believe I was so off in where Bermuda is. I got picked to be on my 9th grade Geography team to compete in the Geography Bee, too, because I was pretty good at it, since I had an odd fascination with maps. I'll stop worrying about you and Gustav, then, Anorak.

Color me and

SuperBunny · 29/08/2008 02:16

Ugh, other people's children, yuck. Especially somewhere like Chuck e cheese. I'm sure all MNers have delightful offspring

I don't remember what tat we got when we were there. I think DS was young enough that I gave our tickets away. .

I'll have to do a poo inspection then!

Think ready-coloured is the way to go.

Thanks for your help.

anorak · 29/08/2008 14:51

Thank you for worrying about me dooneygirl! you're not the only one who gets confused about where Bermuda is - loads of people think it's in the Caribbean. In fact it's around 700 miles away from anywhere else.

We are expecting some light showers and winds from the outer area of tropical storm Hanna at the moment but Gustav is too far away to affect us. We have a whole channel on TV just for the weather forecast with cartoon maps of all the tropical storms and their expected trajectories, it's good fun, and they play soothing background music on it too. My DH watches it for hours

catcath · 29/08/2008 17:37

Hi - can I join you? I have two DD's 5 and 3 and we moved over here in June for DH's work. Lived close to NYC for the first month which was great - an extended holiday! We are now in New Jersey and real life has begun - feel like I've been filling in forms ever since! It's overwhelming isn't it? - the amount that has to be done. Loving it though! And yes - DD's have started getting their extra jabs...

SuperBunny · 29/08/2008 19:10

Hi CatCath, Welcome

I need to get my atlas out and check where Bermuda is too. I used to be good at Geography. When we did the University Pub quiz here, I always got the geography ones right. I was the only one, out of a team of 5 Americans + me who could name the capitals of each state.
