Hi,
We would like to move France, DH got in position that we can live anywhere in EU, so decided France will be the most suitable choice.
DH thinks Bordeux area, where he is got friend. I dont speak French, but Dh got basic. We got dd 2.8y and ds 4m.
Have looked old threads, will go France and look for property. We think renting for the first a few months is good idea.
Hope to hear from other mnetters, got loads to ask.
Happy new year,

Whereabouts are you Scouserabroad?

scouserabroad · 10/01/2008 21:55

I'm near Sarzeau, it's about 30km from Vannes. What about you?

jenpet · 10/01/2008 22:46

Yes, I know Sarzeau quite well as we have friends with a mobile home down there, it's really pretty, some great beaches down there. We are in a village called Le Gorvello. If you head back up the Presqui'ile de Rhuys, we are the next village the other side of Surzur. It's a small world. If you're over this way, the kettle is always on!

nappyaddict · 11/01/2008 12:59

sorry to hijack this thread but are there any french speakers about?

i need to know what

"oui il y a le chassis avec , par contre je ne comprends rien à la question c est en anglais et je ne suis pas forte du tout en anglais"

means.

Othersideofthechannel · 11/01/2008 13:02

Yes, the chassis/frame is included on the other hand I don't understand the question at all. It's in English and I am not very good at English.

Othersideofthechannel · 11/01/2008 13:03

Must admit I am mystified as to what that actually means!

nappyaddict · 11/01/2008 13:12

how do i say are you able to post to england and would you sell it without the car seat?

scouserabroad · 11/01/2008 13:27

Est que vous pourriez l'expédier en Angleterre et est que vous voudriez bien le vendre sans le siège auto?

scouserabroad · 11/01/2008 13:32

hi jenpet, tis a small world! I've been to le Gorvello once, when I'd just moved here, and was sightseeing! It was so lovely, like a postcard village Sarzeau is nice too, but didn't go to the beach much this year as I was too pregnant

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2008 13:39

"oui il y a le chassis avec , par contre je ne comprends rien à la question c est en anglais et je ne suis pas forte du tout en anglais"

Yes, the metal frame comes with it. However, I don't understand the question. It is in English, and my English is not good at all."

And just a little modification to scouserabroad's sentence:

"Est-ce que vous pourriez l'expédier en Angleterre et est-ce que vous voudriez bien le vendre sans le siège auto?"

hi all reading this thread with interest as we are hoping to move abroad next year. i am leaning towards portugal (algarve) but dh wants to try france because house prices are cheaper. the plan is to rent out our house here in uk and go and rent abroad for a year or so.

we holidayed in france last year (berville sur mer in normandy, boring, nothing to do and accommodation terrible which didnt help) visited honfleur (gorgeous but very busy) and also giverney to visit monets garden.
my overall impression was that it is a very beautiful country but i found a lot of the french people quite rude and unhelpful (sorry if that offends anyone). going into a restaraunt was a nightmare because all the menu's were in french and waiters werent very helpful, we lived on ham & cheese most of the week!

anyway dh wants to go to southern france this year and visit eurodisney with our dd 3.9yrs

should we decide to move to france, what are employment opportunities like??

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2008 14:16

glitter - You can get away with not speaking French in the bigger cities like Paris, if you are working for an international company. However, in the smaller towns you will need French skills to find work.

If you really wish to move here and work, it might be an idea to start learning French now.

Trust me, it is MUCH easier to learn French than Portuguese. DH talks Portuguese with his family and after years of marriage, I can say maybe 5 words in Portuguese. In comparison, I was fluent in French in 6 months.

scouserabroad · 11/01/2008 14:24

cotedazur of course I knew that lol

I have never lived in Paris so don't know what it's like there but I can't imagine trying to work in France without speaking French. There is quite high unemployment in France, but how easily you find work depends on your experience / qualifications etc.

BTW employees at french jobcentres (ANPE) tend not to be very helpful. I know that's generalising, but...

nappyaddict · 11/01/2008 20:35

sorry to hijack again but what is french for carrycot?

nappyaddict · 11/01/2008 20:36

and hood?

castille · 11/01/2008 20:43

Carrycot is nacelle
Hood is capote

castille · 11/01/2008 20:47

Glitter - not surprising menus were in French in France, surely

You'd be highly unlikely to find work without fluent French, I'm afraid. Unemployment is high compared to the UK and salaries are generally lower. Lots of Brits have moved here then gone back after a couple of years through lack of work/money.

Rhubarb · 11/01/2008 20:49

ggg - can you email me? I got your text and wanted to respond by email but it keeps bouncing back to me.

Pardon moi.

Tinker · 11/01/2008 21:02

"going into a restaraunt was a nightmare because all the menu's were in french"

Rhubarb · 11/01/2008 21:04

marina · 11/01/2008 21:08

at all these lovely locations
Spent a fab holiday in the Cantal some years ago (near Vic sur Cere above Aurillac), have fond memories of the red cows "Salers de rien mais c'est vache" and am still pining for Brouage after a wonderful holiday in Marennes/La Tremblade last year
Bonne chance a tous

Rhubarb · 11/01/2008 21:10

I love you Marina!

marina · 11/01/2008 21:10

Je t'aime moi aussi rhubarbe

Rhubarb · 11/01/2008 21:11

tu est fantastique!

ib · 11/01/2008 21:20

I'm living in Provence but will be leaving France in the next 3 years as don't want to send ds to school here - I don't like the French system and there are no international or otherwise suitable schools near me.

I would think with children your age the existence of a school you would be willing to send them to would be a pretty major consideration when choosing a location, have you thought about that at all?
