EU residents, will you send your DC to UK universities? For science based courses in particular

We had a talk with DD’s school, she is in the equivalent of year 12 so will need to evaluate uni options soon. UK universities as a foreign student is going to cost from €25-40K per year depending on course, pretty much on a par with US Ivy League. DD is an EU citizen and can go to uni in the EU for a lot less - most courses are around €2K a year in fees. Lots of courses are taught in English if DD doesn’t want to stay in her home country, or she can study in Dublin.

The other issue is, will UK university qualifications have any value, now that equivalence is lost? She wants to do something quite specialised which has its specific qualification but if it’s not going to be recognised outside the UK then it would be a bit pointless and create extra cost and hassle for accessing postgrad courses in the EU.

Has anyone had recent experience, or wondering the same?

I'm interested to know what science courses your DD can find in the EU. I studied Biology at Edinburgh back in the day, and all my experience of university organisation is UK-based. DS (currently 15) is interested in studying Zoology or Biology, but we are really struggling to find these kind of general science degrees in France (where we live). I have a friend whose daughter went to Southampton to do Marine Biology - once reason was because she couldn't find a similar degree in France, it seems that science is much more vocational than in the UK. I'd be interested to hear anyones experiences in this respect.

I did look at courses in Prague, and I think there were the same in Bulgaria, offered in Italian as well as English. I guess I’m just wondering re the quality of the courses and options for moving on to second stage (with the clinical experience). Would she get on to a course in, say, Ireland RCSI with the first 3 years completed in Prague, Sofia or the NL? I know some Italian universities are a bit sniffy about them, not so much NL I guess.

We have another talk at school before the Easter holidays about applications for medicine and the various entry requirements. We’ll see what they say about Eastern Europe.

In the meantime I’ve been looking into fees and student financing, at this point mainly for living costs as in most cases the fees are low and eminently doable, but living costs in Northern Europe, for example, are pretty high. I’ve not found much on maintenance grants in the EU unless via Erasmus and nothing in Italy unless very low income. Only scholarships it seems. Will need to dig more.

My ds is in Ireland and dd will follow this year. Three thousand euros in fees. He is having the time of his life.

Yes I saw Ireland was only €3K odd for medicine, free for some other degrees. I’m trying to nudge DD in that direction. Although living in Dublin is €€€€. 😬

And the quality of the universities is excellent (RCSI, Trinity etc) so we won’t feel like we’re making do.
