Anyone else? Or are your DC already in school? What's it like for them?

Primary DC starting half classes for two days and then full school. Separate break times, that's all I know.

Already back, mainland China.
Grade 3 and below, not back yet.

ShanghaiDiva · 10/05/2020 13:39

Social distancing, compulsory to wear a mask, twice daily temp checks, temp check at home before leaving for school, no parents on campus, no after school activities/clubs.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/05/2020 13:42

Yep - both mine are back tomorrow, one in Y2, one in Y7 in NSW. But it's only one day a week, they've split the school population so that (for the primary) only 1/4 go in on each of Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri. Weds no one except the kids who've been going the whole time are in (they're also in the rest of the time).
Our primary school is trying to maintain social distancing within the classes, god knows how they're planning to deal with break times, and all parents are totally discouraged from entering the school premises unless absolutely necessary.

High school - DS1 will be driven rather than taking the train there, but he will get the school bus back in the afternoon. It's a complicated set up. I don't mind him going on the school bus, which is only for school kids, but he's not going on the germ-tube that is the train.

I'm a bit anxious how it will work, but REALLY looking forward to a day off homeschooling the Y2 child (SO reluctant, he is!)

Pipandmum · 10/05/2020 13:42

No. Online remote learning all day for my daughter at her private school currently. She's desperate to get back in the classroom as she can't do any of the practical work and she has major exams (England so GCSEs which really determine her next step). Hoping she will go back June 1, along with a couple other year groups that have exams coming up but other years may be later so there can at least be a nominal nod to social distancing.

HoldMyLobster · 10/05/2020 15:29

I'm in the US and ours won't go back till Sept now, but I'm really interested to read what others are doing.

They've compressed our summer term, so ours actually finish online learning for the year on June 12 and will have a nearly 12-week summer holiday.

They're ramping up testing and contact tracing so I'm hopeful that by Sept school will be able to reopen somewhat normally.

doradoo · 10/05/2020 15:35

I'm in NRW Germany - DD who's in the last year of primary was back on Friday - there were six kids in the class, she has 4 more days of school scheduled before our summer holidays start on 26.6.

Both DSs at Gymnasium have four days planned too - only for maths, German and English- everything else being done at home.

I've had enough of homeschooling just want the school year done.

doradoo · 10/05/2020 15:37

Meant to add, all the classes are split into smaller groups to allow for social distancing and although we have to wear masks in shops and on public transport, they don't need to in school.

Haypyrexic · 10/05/2020 15:44

No social distancing within the class, although they will keep the kids separate at break. Unsure how they're going to keep them apart at home time, 6 classes of 20-25 kids, one staircase which all the children will need to come down.
We've been told not to accompany children to school.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/05/2020 16:06

Doradoo - we're only in Term 2 of our 4 term school year! we've just starter week 3 of a 10 week term, so we've still got 32 more days of homeschooling before the next holiday - unless we move to PHase 2 before the end of this term, in which case kids will be back 2 days a week instead of just 1.

Trenisenne · 10/05/2020 19:31

Yeap, we are back tomorrow, but on half days (perhaps the same place as you!). Mixed feelings, to be honest, and I worry about the teachers. But, I think it will do the children good to see their friends and working at home and school at home is killing me....

sunbunnydownunder · 11/05/2020 00:58

We are in WA and our schools are back, This is the 3rd week back my kids 2nd I kept off the 1st. The high school is at over 80% back. Parents aren't allowed onto school grounds and they have staggered pick up. Extra cleaning etc.

monkeywrench · 11/05/2020 13:09

In BW Germany. Just found out my 4th class DD who was supposed to go back on the 18th May, now won't be as her teacher is in a risk group as are most of the teachers in her school. No idea what I am going to do now, self employed, work outside the house and can't whilst both kids are home and homeschooling. DS should go back on 15 June but week in week at home basis ( 6. Class)

Haypyrexic · 11/05/2020 13:12

Most people I know with Kl.4 kids (~10 year olds) and even some of DD's Kl.2 friends (7-8 year olds) have been left alone for the morning/ afternoon and expected to get on with their work Shock

Bavaria - DC1 (would be year 10 equivalent) was back today but only 2 days per week (they're in in half classes, 2 days per week each, core subjects only, masks on the bus there - we live a long way from school - and moving around the school but not in class, fixed seating plan, tachers moving between classes instead of children moving to teachers). It was an anticlimax as one core subject teacher is in a high risk group and they were just chucked out of school during the lessons assigned to that teacher. She said she gets more done from home via MS Teams. Also said the stairwells and corridors were packed despite only 1/6th of the total student population being in.

DC2 (would be UK year 7 equivalent) should be back next week theoretically but no concrete information.

DC3 (low priority primary year, not the final year) might go back late June... His teacher is setting 8 tasks per day plus optional extra work for the over engaged - as far as I can tell absolutely all the children are doing all the 8 tasks and most some of the extra (class full of infuriatingly overly engaged sahp of only children, think DC3 is the only child with more than one sibling and one of only a handfull with two working parents... sorry I mean the class is full of the children of those parents, I think...), and even scraping through the set tasks requires a degree of supervision which makes it impossible to WFH between 8am and 12:30 :( I'm completely confident they don't do this much when actually at school...

monkeywrench · 11/05/2020 18:05

I can leave mine alone together for short periods (9 and 11) but any longer and they fight. The older one can stay alone for longer periods but the younger one doesn't like to be left alone, so I am a bit screwed really. Plus the older will do NO school work if I am not here to corral him. Nightmare! I have just discovered that of the 3 4. Kl is DD's school 1 is going back, and have had another email from the head asking for some calm I guess as many parents are angrily complaining to her. I guess she has her hands tied a bit. 🤷🏽‍♀️

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 12/05/2020 14:26

I can leave my kids alone together in any combination, I'm really lucky in that way. The problem is that my youngest is a dreamer with possible dyslexia, or something... (we had two assessment appointments at the Sozial Pediatric Zentrum before the shut down interupted them, and then a telephone appointment during which he did a diktat effectively, which I scanned and sent off, but since then radio silence...). He's so bright though, in his way, so incredibly perceptive and razor sharp in some ways, but utterly unable to focus (not ADHD as he's not hyperactive and he is a "good" sweet child, but maybe ADD...) so I just cannot neglect his schooling or he'll fall through the net and end up at Mittleschule, which I suspect he's too sensitive to cope with!

DC2 is also a coaster and if I don't check on him will half arse things, although he also means well.

DC1 is a perfectionist and will go too far the other way!

Both DC1 and DC2 have offered to homeschool DC3 but they shouldn't have to. DC1 would probably make quite a good job of it, but DC2 and 3 are too close in age and DC2 can't spell or remeber which Vergangenheit is which either

monkeywrench · 12/05/2020 16:39

Just had a call from our Elternbeirat, they have a meeting tomorrow with the head. Apparently DD's class and her parallel class are the only 2 in the school not going back in some form or another!! There is a third 4.kl who is going back a few days a week, plus all the other 3 years are in some way or another. Puts a bit if a different slant on the anger of some parents. Even if DD was just in 1 day a week for a couple of hours it would be something. This is her last term in the school before she goes to the Gymnasium.

sunbunnydownunder · 13/05/2020 02:43

Just aside note my eldest was always pulled up on his lack of concentration but they always said no to ADHD because he wasn't hyper or hard to manage. Turns out he is probably ADD afterall and has Non attentive ADD.

DamnYankee · 13/05/2020 03:19

Mixed feelings, to be honest, and I worry about the teachers. But, I think it will do the children good to see their friends and working at home and school at home is killing me....

Speech pathologist professional, here! Can't wait to be back!
Maybe send gift certs. to the liquor shops? You know...errrr. To kill germs?
Honestly can't wait to see my caseload again...

Haypyrexic · 13/05/2020 07:06

First day with the whole school going in/out at the same time today.

There no distancing between children but children have to stay 2m from staff.

DD will be having no PE lessons any more Hmm they will be going into the tick infested forest for walks instead. Apparently it will be too tricky with using equipment. Not sure why they can't do traditional sports or even football on the sports field! Seems a bit negligent considering kids have been restricted in what they can do recently.

OP posts:
Haypyrexic · 13/05/2020 07:24

Oh and they've been told no fighting and they're not allowed to hug each other!

OP posts:
AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 13/05/2020 12:00

Football isn''t allowed for anybody though (except the Bundeslega for some reason) becasue it's a contact sport. They could do athletics, but not football.

The football field in our village, which was previously not legally accessable because it is reached by walking along a path alongside a playground, has been separately taped off with hazard tape since the playground reopened last Wednesday.

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 13/05/2020 12:01

Sorry about the oddly transposed letters and punctuation marks in the post above!

Haypyrexic · 13/05/2020 12:07

You are allowed to play tennis football!
A.k.a. Football without tackling, keeping distance and passing/intercepting. The Kl.5 we're playing it yesterday with the teacher standing 2m from the pitch.

OP posts:
AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 13/05/2020 12:19

eingeschränktes Fußball-Training in Kleingruppen (maximal fünf Personen inklusive Trainer/Betreuer) but not school football!
