Line drying laundry in the Middle East

I was hanging out washing today here in London and marvelling at how quickly it dried (about 27 today).

I've been wondering about places where is regularly 50. What do you do? Hang it out at night and bring it in very early? It would be too hot to do the pegging out in the daytime surely?

I have no good reason for asking just wondered!

greengreensofa

me too Grin

hanging washing out is my favourite "chore" I absolutely love line dried washing. My neighbours think I am mad.

timeforakinderworld · 23/07/2019 10:14

steppemum - this reminds me of my mum making me go out and bring in frozen shirts off the line. We used to love bringing them in all frozen hard!

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2019 10:14

I want one of those pulley washing lines not because it is hot just cos Im lazy Grin

I line dried all my clothes through Canadian winters and learned

  1. wear sunglasses especially if you have a white house - snow is very bright
  2. sort out all the wet washing before you go out
  3. lay everything out in the basket the way up you want to hang it
  4. wear gloves
  5. even if it comes in frozen solid it still seems to have gone through some sort of drying, which made it finish off quicker inside and still smell of the outdoors
Just in case you ever find yourselves in need of drying washing in -10--35 temperatures I do miss Canadian washing lines but not the winters...

My MIL lives in a very hot country. She pegs washing out at night and it's dry by mid morning

OdeYellerBelly · 23/07/2019 10:20

Yes @Mrsjayy! Canadian washing lines are the pulley type. I've often thought about trying to set one up here (UK) but you need a very high washing line pole.

stellavisionandunderstanding · 23/07/2019 10:53

We live in Doha and it's so hot outside, even walking to your car is hard work, and dusty that it's best to dry it inside.

GreengreenSofa · 23/07/2019 12:54

OP, with a predicted temperature of 101 /38 in London on Thursday, you could try line drying and report back?

Wrongdissection · 23/07/2019 13:04

I hung out DD’s sheets/duvet cover this morning and it was all dry within half an hour. The kids were less impressed than I was 😂

ThighsRelief · 23/07/2019 14:22

Green i will! I have the 2nd load on the line now Wink

Nothing to add but I love this thread, thank you. Laundry and especially pegging out washing is something I really enjoy!

Laundry habits from around the globe.

What next? Photographs of the inside of your fridge?

Bonus points for drinks dispenser, now that's posh!

Lightweights!

In Shetland - average summer temperature 14 - I can get washing dried in an hour if it doesn't blow away

ThighsRelief · 23/07/2019 21:08

Olly swap you for London heat!

We lived in Oz, and the clothes were dry within the hour. We lived in Perth so the Fremantle doctor helped in the afternoons.

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 23/07/2019 21:18

Three loads of washing dried here today, I'm in the SE and it was 30+ today. I'm very professional d of my achievements but no one else seems very interested HmmGrin

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 23/07/2019 21:19

Proud of

I know I'm old now as I look out of the window and think "ooh, it's going to be a good drying day" and feel ridiculously satisfied with life.

Hollyhobbi · 23/07/2019 21:31

I live in Ireland! It's the highlight of my mother's day if she gets a line of washing dried. She got a new washing machine this morning and could not wait to use it so she could catch up with the washing while there's 'good drying out'!! Last summer was brilliant. Towels and jeans dried in a day!

hsegfiugseskufh · 23/07/2019 21:32

soulrunner i am the same but i am only 23 Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/07/2019 01:19

Well, there you go, habibihabibi - it's a 'thing' Smile

And of course I know I can go out in the day and hang out or bring in my washing, but I do feel very smug bringing it in without melting. It can feel so hot that even my dogs will avoid going outside if they don't have to which is definitely not what they do in spring and autumn.

Nice post Greengreensofa Smile

ThighsRelief · 25/07/2019 01:44

3 loads in and out in London today! I don't have any washing left which is a shame as it's going to bake tomorrow.

thighs my fridge has a water dispenser on it. Not a plumbed in one, you have to fill the reservoir. So I fill it with cheap white wine from a box. (Probably not very hygienic but I clean it through often)

In answer to the other question, not particularly humid. But yes to people complaining about the dust. I’ve learned something from this thread though. Well over 10 years of living here and never figured out why my clothes fade. I’m an idiot Blush

SlipperOrchid · 25/07/2019 01:51

You can get jeans dry in an hour when it's above 35

Do people who remark on 'great drying weather' really wear jeans when its over 35?

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/07/2019 02:17

ThighsRelief - any curtains need a freshen up??

MardasSnails - what a great idea! When I first moved to a hot place I left my washing on the line for a weekend and came back to find it had faded around the pegs, leaving darker rectangles. I still do it sometimes though (lazy).
