Easter eggs in the US

chemenger · 06/04/2019 22:58

Am I not looking in the right places or does the US not do large chocolate Easter eggs? I’m only just recovering from them not really doing chocolate advent calendars,.

Is it bad to be glad about the lack of Easter eggs in the US?!! I'm going to US for Easter to visit friends and I've bought them big Easter eggs to take with me.. I now know they will definitely like them! GrinGrin

Kescilly · 07/04/2019 12:00

I’m kind of surprised by how disappointed people are! I suppose it’s just about what you’ve grown up with, but I find the giant Easter eggs a bit pointless.

TansyViola · 07/04/2019 12:55

They're good for punching

chemenger · 07/04/2019 13:26

They are pointless, I suppose, but dd has had an Easter egg every year for the last 17, kind of sad to break that tradition. They are a big part of our U.K. Easter (pretty much the only thing that marks Easter actually)

So disappointed to find that Bilbies are not available outside Australia.

I’m slightly hampered in my search by living in the centre of Boston and not having a car (how unamerican) so out of town places are no good. I’ve never been to Walmart, for example.

OP posts:
OutOntheTilez · 07/04/2019 13:45

Walmart has large chocolate Reese’s peanut butter-filled eggs about the size of an ostrich egg. DS1 and DS2 each get one every year, and I buy one for myself, hide it, and eat it on the sly because they'll find it and devour it if given the chance.

They also come as smaller, peanut butter crème eggs. But if you’re looking for large, solid chocolate or hollow chocolate eggs, no, I don’t think so. You’ll find hollow and solid chocolate Easter bunnies all over the place.

Gingerivy · 07/04/2019 13:52

Most families I knew growing up in the US had the same type of Easter sweets that we did: an Easter basket with the plastic (or paper crinkly) grass in it, with jelly beans, little chocolate eggs, and a chocolate bunny. Some do the peeps too, although they are frighteningly sweet. I was thrilled when we moved to the UK and saw that it's just a simple large chocolate egg. My God, so much less faffing about!!! Grin

So sorry I can't really advise on where to get a large chocolate egg though. Hope you find what you need!

dreichuplands · 07/04/2019 14:23

World market and Godiva both sell eggs in central Chicago. Do you have those stores?

lljkk · 07/04/2019 15:33

I don't live in USA any more... but the shocking 95% = packaging chock eggs that you get in UK are pretty bizarre to me. So ruddy wasteful & unimaginative; pointedly ostentatious, too in age of Social Media. The brag fests on here about 'how many eggs' did you get are distasteful.

We tended to have lots of small sweets along with time-consuming sweets, chock (& real hard boiled) egg hunts. Hidden by parents & taking up most of Easter Sunday morning. Decorating the real eggs was very fun & creative (night before). Could take hours (as well as hiding them, and eating them). My kids have always clamoured for hunts (until this year, mostly teenagers & too lazy now).

chemenger · 07/04/2019 21:00

Godiva online don’t have large eggs, only small ones and some very dubious filled ones. They do seem to have adopted the apparent British habit of over packaging quite effectively though. No World Market in Boston.

OP posts:
dreichuplands · 07/04/2019 21:18

Do you have a Godiva shop? They have a wider range.

dreichuplands · 07/04/2019 21:25

Norsdstrom and nieman Marcus both have charbonnel et walker eggs, there are pricey though.

pallisers · 07/04/2019 21:35

@chemenger If you are in Boston go to Kikis Market in Brighton (Faneuil Street) and you will find all the easter eggs your heart desires. Also advent calendars in season and tons of other british/irish sweets/chocolate/crisps/drinks/packets of sauces/mint sauce etc. They do Irish/English back bacon and sausages too. PM me if you want directions. If you are in the centre of Boston, you could easily find a bus there or uber there and back.

The Irish Butcher shop and the Greenhills Bakery on Adams Street in Dorchester (again should be on a bus line) would also have them.

SenecaFalls · 07/04/2019 21:40

How large are we talking about here? I was in Walmart today and saw what, as a veteran of many American Easters, I would consider some pretty large eggs. So the size of a person's head? Football? How big?

TansyViola · 07/04/2019 22:13

I think op means about this big with a TV changer for scale. The packaging is cardboard and foil these days rather than plastic.

chemenger · 07/04/2019 22:44

We do have a Godiva shop, I shall have a look there.

SenecaFalls · 08/04/2019 00:36

Thanks, Tansy. The ones I saw today were not that big, but maybe 3/4 to 1/2 that size.

chemenger · 08/04/2019 12:29

Thanks Pallisers, I will explore!

chemenger · 08/04/2019 20:48

I've taken the easy way out and ordered from Hotel Chocolat, since I know what they are like. Thanks for all your advice and ideas. I might still take a look in the Godiva shop as well...

For those wondering what passes for a large egg in the UK I think the ones (my very spoilt) dds are used to getting from Marks and Spencer are around 10 oz of chocolate. and about 8 inches high. They do last for weeks though.

They had one or two when we lived in the us, hidden in the imported food section. Seemed more last year when we visited at that time but that area is full of ex pat workers so maybe the supermarket was catering to well heeled Brits and Australians

choli · 08/04/2019 21:45

Foodireland.com has them. Also Amazon. Com.

pallisers · 08/04/2019 22:21

chemenger, you really should go and have a look at Kiki's market anyway - I think you'd enjoy it.

I think easter eggs are going to be like christmas crackers and advent calendars - years ago you just didn't see them in US shops but now you do. I bet Marshalls of TJ Max will have some this year.

chemenger · 08/04/2019 22:39

Pallisers, you had me at back bacon! I get fantastic meat here from a company that does meat shares, a bit like a veg box, and milk in glass bottle from the Public Market but a proper bacon sandwich....that would be a thing of beauty. I bet now that I've ordered the most expensive egg in the universe from Hotel Chocolat I will see them everywhere. I'm not buying imported Cadbury's though because it's rank now in the UK, which is lucky in a way because it means I'm not missing creame eggs.

OP posts:
dreichuplands · 08/04/2019 22:41

My local supermarket is full of creme eggs, they are sadly still rank though!
