Also I can't seem to find alot of online shops - is this right, if so how depressing! I used to buy most things online in the UK and hate going to the shops with dc (16 months and 3yrs).

Have just spotted this thread.

Online shopping here is pants compared to the UK (and that's the whole spectrum from food to just about anything else). Think its because there are so many malls here and most people have maids so never a problem to get out to shop.

I like Carrefour for groceries but you'd need to take your DCs out to shop (they deliver)!

Do a google for The Butcher Singapore - I can't find the website (am sure I saw an advert in the latest copy of The Finder) - you can order your meat / sausages etc online and they deliver - supposed to be quite good.

Quokka - think it's very brave of you to buy your property without having seen it!

You're probably all in bed by now but yep, I am in the UK. Have english father and eurasian singaporean mother. My family have a house in singapore (sixth avenue area) and all my mothers side are living there. I've never lived in singapore for more than 3 months at a time but miss the food as haven't been back for a while. Agree about the online shopping, its weird as singapore is so high tech in other ways. Am planning to bring the baby out in jan/feb next year so will be eating my way across the island then

quokka · 11/06/2007 07:11

rojak found the butcher and he looks fab - cheers!

Quokka - if you want to get out for coffee some morning with your DCs, let me know. I live on the east coast and quite often hang out at the park or beach there with DD.

I met Oldnewmummy through this board when I first arrived about 8 months ago and we did a meet up in March or April with Eygpt and Slim22.

quokka · 12/06/2007 02:16

that sounds great Rojak, let me get through this week, have sleep to catch up on, boys are very unsettled. I did post on the singapore mums meetup thread but no one replied. Have spoken to slim and egypt on a thread somewhere as well.

!

Used to live in Bangkok and Vietnam and from Vietnam esp used to go to Singapore for shopping/civilisation weekends. Used to spend hours at a time in Borders. Miss the food, miss the shopping!

quokka - good luck! I think on-line shopping is not as developed as here as most people have maids either to shop or to mind children while they shop. You should be able to find a maid very easily. It is hard at first as we are just not used to it but is so worth it - esp with your little ones. You will probably be able to find someone part-time if you don't want to go the full-time route.

quokka · 12/06/2007 11:11

hi budababe (love the name)! Yes I've moved into a very dirty dusty apartment and was looking in the yellow pages for maid services, as I can't face cleaning and making sure the kids don't throw themselves out the 18th floor! I really don't think I want a live in but a part time one would be fab. I had a cleaner at home so don't have any probs with getting help

Singapore I don't know how you manage without one and you have 3 little ones - you must be crazier than me!

or much more organised!

Hi Quokka it is a bit mental at times, but like you we are not sure we want a live in, part time is something we will explore in Sep, its not as easy as it sounds by all accounts. What we really need is a babysitter, I did have a lady come in twice a week, in fact today was her last day, she was lovely but spoke very little english. We are off to the uk for the summer so will sort something out when i get back. I can recommend Amahs on Wheels for a springclean, very reasonable and they did a fantastic job here a couple of weeks ago.

quokka · 12/06/2007 15:04

yeah I saw them in the yellow pages today, might give them a call. What would they charge for a 3 bed condo? Very jealous of you spending the summer in the UK ! We tried to hold off moving till sept and it didn't work.

rojak, is carrefour on the east coast? Just went to Fairprice extra in KMK Hub and it was a nightmare. Took me 2 and a bit hours to find everything (not quite) I needed, also it was rammed

OP posts:
Rojak · 12/06/2007 15:45

Carrefour is in Plaza Singapura (quieter end of Orchard Road) or Suntec City (which is closer to the east). They open at 10am and best time to go is in the mornings (well the Suntec one anyway) - it is much quieter.

Also you arrived right smack in the middle of the Singapore school holidays so shopping in AMK hub would be a nightmare with parents and kids all on a day out.

I generally find mornings are best for grocery shopping as the shops aren't as rammed. Avoid the shops at weekends!

I have a part-time cleaner who is fab and who's babysat for me several times but she lives in the east though. Oldnewmummy has a childminder who will also babysit evenings (and I think she drives so location not a problem).

I'm currently exploring the live-in option (for September) as DH travels a lot and I'm really tired of the whole single parenting thing when he's gone. It really would be nice to have someone tidy up while I do the kids bedtime.

quokka · 12/06/2007 15:57

right will keep all that in mind! I'm having my meat delivered tomorrow from the singapore butcher .

OP posts:
Singapore · 13/06/2007 04:33

Hi Quokka, not sure what they would charge, but they may well be able to give you an estimate over the phone. I agree with the others avoid all shops at the weekend it the national pastime at the weekend and they are choc-a-block.

quokka · 13/06/2007 05:20

have to get my mobile unblocked - bloody vodafone, and still waiting for a home number! Might venture to Orchard Rd this arvo, boys need some toys and need to get bath mats, the boys are slipping all over the marble bathroom!

Budababe · 13/06/2007 07:00

All sounds like fun and games quokka!

Have a good shop on Orchard Road!

(I am in Budapest and whilst in someways the shopping is OK - it's not Orchard Road!!)

quokka · 13/06/2007 14:39
