While the rest of the world is sleeping, can we deal with our own pressing issues..... like....
did they ever tell that girl in the BB house her dad had died?

and are bonds knickers any good?

I am in Melbourne, Aus ... so a couple of hours ahead of you ... 4.50pm here now. My brother lives in KL - he spends much of his time in the aircon too

eidsvold · 10/06/2007 11:30

can relate quokka - 3 years ago on 4th June - we left UK to live in Australia. Had a stopover in Singapore and it was warm!!

Yesterday was our three year anniversary. Dh has been here for 3 years - as has dd1 - lived here longer than she did in the UK now.

robinpud · 10/06/2007 11:40

Sympathies to all of you feeling homesick. I do admire your courage upping sticks and starting afresh somewhere new. I am not sure if I am brave enough to do it, even if I really wanted to. I do adore a lot of aspects of life here and have an awful feeling that when I get home I am going to HATE lots of things about the UK that I haven't thought about or missed whilst I am here.. like litter vandalism declining society standards etc.
One thing I wonder about is how long does an expat feel an expat? If I did emigrate here, how long would it be before I felt able to sing the aussie anthem ( not Eidsvold's version obv!) Do you feel like you belong? The UK is a pile of crap at times BUT I feel like I belong..

eidsvold have been in London for 8yrs so really am not used to the heat!

Robinpud I was born in Oz but have lived in London (see above) and I don't feel like a aussie or a pom! Now I'm in another country (s'pore), so will get even more confused .

ghosty · 10/06/2007 13:48

Like quokka I am confused.
Born in south africa with British father, SA mum, grew up mainly in Holland - with a bit in Spain and a bit in England. Uni in England, married a kiwi, lived in NZ for 5 years, got kiwi citizenship, now living in Australia ...

And all the members of DS's soccer team are Greek ...

Who am I? Where am I? Is the war over?

robinpud · 10/06/2007 14:09

Ghosty- got a lovely huntsman in the courtyard tonight as big as my hand!

Ds's soccer team are not all greek but from a huge range of backgrounds and very few borna dn bred Aussies.

Just not sure if I moved here if I would ever feel that I belonged or whether I was a transplant coming for the better weather and better q of life

OP posts:
quokka · 11/06/2007 07:15

ghosty do you live in Melbourne by any chance? I think thats where most of the greek population are

Robinpud - try not to think about it too much. If I did I would never have moved here and I wouldn't have the choice of 4 swimming pools to swim in!

ghosty · 13/06/2007 04:17

I am in Melbourne quokka ... the biggest population of Greeks in one city outside of Athens I was told
A couple of weeks ago the Greek prime minister and his wife visited Melbourne and apparently 5000 greeks turned out to greet him ...
I wonder how many people would turn up if Tony and Cherie visited?

We watched 'The Castle' last night on DVD. DH brought it home and said that apparently we had to watch it. Very funny film ...

"What's this we're havin love?"
"Ice cream darl"
"I know that but it's what you do to it that makes it so good. What did you do to it?"
"Scooped it out of the box darl"

PMSL

suzywong · 13/06/2007 04:23

"That's going straight in the Pool Room"

it is vair funny isn't it. My DH made me watch it too, I believe it is The Law for Forrin wives to watch it.

ghosty · 13/06/2007 04:43

"Ah, give us a kiss you great big hunk of man"

quokka · 13/06/2007 05:28

pmsl - you both sound like natives now! I haven't seen it for ages, might make dh watch it (hes a pom)

vizbizz · 13/06/2007 08:34

ha with all the Greeks around, you will have to watch Wogboy if you haven't already seen it! I grew up with a lot of friends (and some family) like these guys!

There is a film called Wogboy?

eidsvold · 13/06/2007 11:47

oh yeh - very dunny... used to be a TV show called Acropolis Now which was a satire on greek families living in Aus.

background here

hilarious - created a character called Effie - god my teen years are before me now!!

effie

the castle - FAB!!! tell him he's dreamin.....

Wanna see RAW - 'once were warriors' blew me away. Have not seen Chopper but was amazed at how much eric bana looked like Chopper!!

Hard to believe Eric Bana was a comedian on fast forward along with the likes of Kath and Kim and now a hollywood star!!

Dh is watching State of Origin whilst I am on here - will be heading to bed soon - had a rough rough day

eidsvold · 13/06/2007 11:47

oops that first line should be very funny - but what an aussie slip DUNNY

potoroo · 13/06/2007 12:08

Righto Aussie Mums, what should I do about this?
DS (2) has started referring to Vegemite as Marmite. The Naughty Step is just not going to cut it...

quokka · 13/06/2007 15:20

I'd lock em in the backyard dunny until they say vegemite - what a crime! Not sure people still have backyard dunny's but I did growing up

eidsvold · 13/06/2007 22:38

threaten to transport him like they did with petty convicts - wait - that might sound too good.... just keep saying vegemite and when he says it - big treat!! refuse to give it to him until he says vegemite - that would get dd1 saying it pretty darn quick.

Hello - is this site used anymore for Aussie mums in UK or is there a new thread?

ninedragons · 28/05/2008 07:56

The roll call thread seems to take tangents and morph into chat, but this looks like it could be due for a revival.

I have been crashing the Kiwi thread for a bit of conversation in my timezone.

eidsvold · 28/05/2008 08:23

no we can use this thread for general chat.

I just want to say - winter has hit today - finally cold weather - jeans, jumper etc today.

Had a good day - got some bargains from spotlight for the girls' bedrooms, got some fabric to finish making the dolls bed my father made for the dds. He made a wooden cradle for them and then flatpacked it for me to paint and put together. Dd2 helped me pick the fabric for the bedding to sew. I think it will look good when finished.

Then went to get dh's birthday present from Anaconda - sold out - supplier had none Not looking like getting anymore. ON sale at a good price that we could afford. But they called just a moment ago to say they managed to source more - there is one waiting in the shop with my name on!!! yah dh gets a birthday present!!!!

Otherwise - big school meeting coming up about dd1's education plan and how they intend to continue meeting her needs at the mainstream school. I want her to do a 4/1 day split with 4 days mainstream and one day at the special ed unit. Not sure whether that will happen or not!!!

ninedragons · 28/05/2008 08:54

What's Anaconda?

Is the special ed unit attached to the mainstream school or will she have to go to another campus?

eidsvold · 28/05/2008 11:31

no special ed unit is attached to the nearby special school - so she does attend two campuses. Thankfully in the early childhood unit of the special ed school - they do not need to wear a uniform - so only one uniform.

At the moment she is doing a 3/2 split - with three days at mainstream.

Anaconda - huge sports store:
