Silly things we miss

Feeling homesick at the moment, and started to think about what I missed from UK. Started laughing, realizing that the stuff I missed was really odd - I really miss the shops, not exciting ones, but plain old sainsburys and tescos, people's accents, the train stations, and hot cross buns 😅

Any one else miss the silly things that don't really matter, apart from the fact that they do?

Seasons. The first time you leave work and it's light and you know spring is on its way....

And on a sunny day opening all the windows and letting the breeze in.

I miss a breeze.

And cheese.

I came from Germany to the UK and I miss
-Special cookies around Christmas time (Lebkuchen, Spekulatius...)
-My favourite Muesli
-Chocolate (Milka, Knoppers, Ritter Sport)
-proper tampons (sorry but yours are just weird with those huge applicators and just not being as...compressed, sorry if this is weird but the difference is huge)
-BREAD. Like actual dark bread.
-My favourite trash TV shows

When I go back in summer I will miss
-Shops being open seven days a week and also shops being open until late
-crumpets
-scones
-Sandwiches and Fingerfood from the supermarket
-Cards for very specific occasions ("Stepdaughter Sweet 16? Right over there")
-The language and local accent
-TV

I miss pubs and saturday night tv! I really fancy watching something that is actually ON on a Saturday night rather than on demand - no idea what is on nowadays but I fancy watching something like The Generation Game that we can all watch together. Blush

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 07/03/2018 17:36

My Trader joes only has the cinnamon crumpets. Bleuuuuurgh. And the shepherd’s pie has corn in it. Corn.

I think I may now officially truly be American, as both of these things seem perfectly reasonable to me Grin

oppsthereshegoes · 07/03/2018 19:02

I really miss knowing that most of the country is watching the same thing. Like a bank holiday film or special when you were a kid.

DownAtFraggleRock · 07/03/2018 19:20

Proper pubs, the radio and my Mum Grin

QueenCity · 07/03/2018 21:12

@CatherineTheTiny You can buy Milka and Ritter Sport chocolate in the UK. Lebkuchen are also quite easy to find at Christmas although can appreciate it might not be like the genuine stuff!

For tampons just look for non applicator ones like Lillets!

Ski40 I'm British and lived for several years in Spain. The only thing I missed while I lived there was cooler weather in summer (lived near Almería Grin ) and my family/British friends.

Since I've come back 'home' there are so many Spanish things I miss!
Coffee that tastes 'right' and eating tostata con tomate for late breakfast in the bar (with that perfect coffee) probably the top two.

Not an expat but this is a fascinating read.

I laughed at ‘the concept of Argos’ - it sounds like a cheap perfume.

I can’t believe that there are no Easter Eggs in America.

lakeshoreliving · 07/03/2018 21:32

To be fair simon they do have chicks made out of marshmallows in various pastel shades and chocolate bunnies.

oppsthereshegoes · 07/03/2018 22:26

Peeps. Nobody actually eats that shit though.

mathanxiety · 07/03/2018 22:37

I used to buy Easter eggs in an Italian deli that was owned by an old Italian couple. The eggs were imported from Italy, and they were works of art. It was almost a shame to see them being ripped into by the DCs.

mathanxiety · 07/03/2018 22:37

The DCs loved Peeps too - hence why I thought the eggs were wasted on them.

The pub

Lookforthestars · 30/03/2018 12:23

Good Friday and Easter Monday. I've had my yearly argument about dh going to work today. Angry

MisguidedAngel · 30/03/2018 12:46

My favourite newspaper - only Murdoch crap available here
Charity shops - not just for buying, but for donating too
The supermarkets - so much choice and cheaper
Decent beef, familiar cuts of meat
Branston pickle
Aldi - they are here but nowhere near as good as in UK

I like the cheap wine here though

allchangenochange · 30/03/2018 14:45

DH at work also, dc off school but have routine health appointments.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/03/2018 16:24

Being off work for the Easter weekend. Not having to trudge off to a fancy, overpriced food market to get my paws on an Easter Egg and some hot cross buns Angry.

Lookforthestars · 30/03/2018 20:31

Going miles for hot cross buns and them having cunting icing on instead of the white cross baked in. AngryAngryAngryAngry

Lookforthestars · 30/03/2018 20:32

I don't miss that. That's not what used to happen. That's what happens now.

allchangenochange · 30/03/2018 20:46

I've had two sets of hot cross buns from the same shop, one had a pastry cross but it wasn't baked in so a gooey mess, the second batched were iced in.
