Silly things we miss

Feeling homesick at the moment, and started to think about what I missed from UK. Started laughing, realizing that the stuff I missed was really odd - I really miss the shops, not exciting ones, but plain old sainsburys and tescos, people's accents, the train stations, and hot cross buns 😅

Any one else miss the silly things that don't really matter, apart from the fact that they do?

Ready to eat snacky stuff for a picnic. You know, little pies, cheese thingy's, cocktail whatsits.

Here in Aus/Nz you have to make stuff for a picnic you can't just nip to M&S or Waitrose and have aisles of delightful finger food you can chuck on a blanket in a park for everyone to share

If no one has time to make anything you end up with just chips and dips and a net of babybel. I WANT DELICIOUS TINY SAMOSAS AND A READY TO EAT TANDOORI CHICKEN KEBAB!!

Cavender · 27/02/2018 05:26

Actually I don’t miss very much at all, but we do ask all our visitors to bring British chocolate.

American chocolate is not to our taste.

isthistoonosy · 27/02/2018 05:32

Snow days and the general excitement of snow that you get in the uk.

We häve snow for months on end, prob about 1.5m in the garden at the moment. Its just boring now.

Todamhottoday · 27/02/2018 05:33

Oh really dont know where to start....

Pubs and being able to consume alcohol outside (Lolita im with you on that one) and buy it in the supermarket

More than one kind of mushroom/potato/tomato in fact most veg thats safe to eat.

Cheese, proper cheese.

Shopping for clothes without being followed everywhere (insert most shops really)

Having a walk out be it in the snow/rain/wind, just being able to walk anywhere really

Being able to go to a gym thats fit for purpose same with a swimming-pool thats clean/safe enough to swim in.

Country fresh air and the wind from the sea on my face

and of course the usual M&S/Waitrose (but joy of joy found a Waitrose tropical diluting juice covered in dust and out of date in a local supermarket, for £1.50, bought it and its like liquid gold!)

I could really go on, but will stop

oliviapopeswineglass · 27/02/2018 05:38

I miss the sense of humour, I also miss terribly the understanding of queuing, it's such a fair and organised system you stand in a queue and your turn will come before the person who just walked in ten minutes later. No pushing in, no shoving.
Supermarkets too and crumpets!

OlennasWimple · 27/02/2018 21:05

KevinK - do you have a Wegmans or a Trader Joe's near you? A couple of years ago they had proper Easter eggs.

I miss crisps in a variety of flavours. I like ready salted best, but being confined to ready salted only makes me want prawn cocktail or beef and mustard flavours

kevinkeeganlovesme · 27/02/2018 23:27

We have a trader joes about four hours away. It'll be worth it though!!

AdoraBell · 27/02/2018 23:49

Radio, British telly, walnut whips from M&S.

Now that we’ve moved back I miss loads from Chile. Abundant and cheap fruit and veg, super cheap fillet and sirloin steak steak on the BBQ with Chilean chorizo, raspberry juice in coffee shops, tea- yes I know we have tea here in the UK, but not the ones I had in Chile. Fantastic wines at considerably lower prices than they are here. The mountains, the wildlife, the sun, the forests, rivers, trees, horses grazing on peoples gardens, restaurants, the glaciers and most of all, friends.

Desperatelyseekingsun · 28/02/2018 00:35

Olennas DH won't be thrilled if he spots Easter eggs in Trader Joe's having dragged them back from UK! At least one was a Percy pig one and thus not to be found here!

DramaAlpaca · 28/02/2018 00:48

I'm not too far away from home but when I go back I love nothing more than a potter around Asda & Morrison's. I really miss the local accent, I find it so comforting. And the sense of humour. I'm just back from a trip home & wish I could've stayed longer.

FiveShelties · 28/02/2018 01:33

Yes Drama me too, I really miss the humour.

Frakka · 28/02/2018 01:44

@DamnCommandments I meant me. Everyone else has purpose but I am filling the days until we go home and I can get on with my life.

Not quite the point of the thread though Blush

DamnCommandments · 28/02/2018 07:00

Frakka I thought it was poetic. Thank you for saying it.

Bebespain · 28/02/2018 12:17

Arh these threads kill me. 11 years out of the UK and still miss so many silly and not so silly things. It certainly hasn´t got any easier over the years.

At the moment I miss silly Walkers cheese and onion crisps on silly Warburtons white bread.

Somebody mentioned up thread the ease of just being able to turn on the TV and sit down, relax and watch what you want. There are days when I would kill to do that Grin

kevinkeeganlovesme · 28/02/2018 14:11

Actually one of the very few things I've still not gotten here is crumpets. Fucking hell we go through dozens when we go back.

dantdmistedious · 28/02/2018 14:20

Decent bacon, sausages, marmite.

I was an expat in the ME a loooong time ago - I'm sure you can get marmite there now. At the time you used to have to go to a special pork room in the supermarkets to buy pork products and the bacon was vile, it tasted of fish. You could get imported frazzles though 😃

calzone · 28/02/2018 14:33

I missed Indian food and Ant & Dec!!!!!!

Suburbanfocks · 28/02/2018 14:57

I missed super noodles, baked beans and flake chocolate bars as a teenager, and random adverts/things that felt familiar.
10 years back in the UK and I miss things from the other country so bad I dream about them, usually to do with food!

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 28/02/2018 22:02

Crumpets in Trader Joe's! Buy lots and freeze them.

Sunshineandgin · 01/03/2018 04:22

I miss going for a wander up the high street. Drifting around malls is just not the same.

And pubs, especially missing them now the Six Nations rugby is on. Used to love meeting friends and settling in for the afternoon in a busy pub where everyone is chatting and laughing and sharing in the enjoyment of the match. Not the same when the options are overpriced bars or an “Irish Pub” full of drunk people.

Also finding I’m missing things from other places I’ve lived - really missing the Hawker centres from Singapore and the amazing wet season storms. And missing how easy it was to get around both in Singapore and New York and London! Good public transport infrastructure is essential.

coffeeandrainbows · 01/03/2018 04:41

I miss the anonymity - being unremarkable/normal until I speak and my non-local accent comes out and then everyone notices and will remember me.

LolitaLempicka · 01/03/2018 04:58

My Trader joes only has the cinnamon crumpets. Bleuuuuurgh. And the shepherd’s pie has corn in it. Corn. 🙄😫

Historicallyinaccurate · 01/03/2018 05:02

Mini cheddars and proper Wensleydale Sad

Ski40 · 01/03/2018 06:17

I am in the same boat but reverse, I come from Spain but have lived in the UK for 16 years and as I am married to an English guy I probably won' ever go back home.
Apart from the obvious, like missing family and friends, I really miss the food. Not only the actual food, as I can easily recreate it here, but the social aspect of it, the going from bar to bar eating tapas with friends o spending a lazy Sunday cooking a giant paella together.
I miss certain drinks I can't find here.
I miss the mid-range eau de toilettes that they don't sell here (actual perfumes are the same everywhere). They were gorgeous and so fresh.
I miss the Mayos, romantic songs performed in the street by Tunos, which are male university students in a traditional costume. Sometimes they serenade ladies under their balconies 😍
I miss the seafood.
I miss El Corte Ingles, a department store chain.
I miss the voice announcements in the underground, the lady has a gorgeous voice.
Verbenas (live music and dancing into the early hours in the street in summer). Kids too!
Using a pretty lace hand fan in the hot months. I have tried here but as nobody else does I feel kinda silly..😂
I miss the mountains. My area of the UK is completely flat with nothing to look at.
I could go on. I'm mostly happy here but of course there is nostalgia for the little things back home. I'm feeling guilty I am now enjoying all the things you guys list in your posts!
If I were to go back home tomorrow, I would miss:
Cadbury chocolate, shops open all day, the rain, the concept of Argos, the sweets and cakes (Spain not that big on that), living in a house with garden (mainly flats in Spain), and the chocolate box villages and beautiful old buildings. X

Ski40 · 01/03/2018 06:19

I just put together in my head Tunos and Mayo and it made me laugh and wake the toddler up oooops...😁
