agunter · 11/10/2007 19:33

Hi there, I'm a south african living in the uk - for 8 years already. I have a little boy who is 18months old. would like to chat to other safricans out there

Migrationdiary · 09/12/2007 16:27

Hi there, we left Durban in July 2006 for the UK. I have 3 kids - youngest is 8months old.

SleepIsForTheWeak · 22/01/2008 10:04

Seen this a bit late, are you still out there?!?!?

mommywillwin · 22/01/2008 11:22

Hi, I'm from SA, DS is 9 months old. We're moving back in a few months. Really excited but also a bit worried by crime, poverty, job prospects for me (DH is sorted, TG)and the future political stability (Zuma, 2009 elections et al.)

Just posted a thread about movers, and saw this, thought it would be rude not to respond

tasjaSAmuminUK · 22/01/2008 17:09

Hi there

We are also moving back to SA. DD and I are going the 23rd of Feb and then DH will follow end of July. He had a job interview over the telephone last week and we are just waiting now for the offer.
we are going to live in Cape Town.
I'm so excited!

SleepIsForTheWeak · 22/01/2008 20:03

Hi,
We are thinking about moving back to SA too (have been here 12 years!)
We are going to go and stay in CT for 3 months in July or so, and see how we feel about it.
Have huge worries (obviously) but feel we cant know unless we try.
where are you based now?

tasjaSAmuminUK · 23/01/2008 09:53

HI

have seen you on the other thread I think. Im in Northampton now.

SleepIsForTheWeak · 23/01/2008 21:54

And you, mummywillwin? where are you moving to in SA?
Tasja, you must let us know hw you find it when you get there!

Sal22 · 23/01/2008 22:10

Hi everyone. I'm a South African too, living in London for last 5 years and prob will for another couple of years. Expecting our first mid April. A little worried being here alone, as all the family in SA, but at least mom coming to visit for 3 weeks over expected birth period.

mommywillwin · 24/01/2008 09:56

Hi Sal22, welcome to the thread. Congrats on your imminent arrival. Do you know the gender of your LO?

SleepIsForTheWeak, we are moving back to Cape Town. Can't imagine living anywhere else really, except maybe a small, quiet 'dorp' in the Freestate. London kind of killed off our desire to live in big cities. We really need some space now. I guess since having DS, I just want to get back to basics and grow some veggies...

Tasja, what's Northampton like?

tasjaSAmuminUK · 24/01/2008 15:27

Northampton is almost like "die platteland" for me.
I can't wait to "go back to normal". NORMAL SA!

Where I can drive around (I don't drive in UK, don't like narrow spaces), go to Century City or Tygervalley and walk around all day! Eat Wimpy breakfast. See my AFRIKAANS friend, speak AFRIKAANS, let my DD play with AFRIKAANS friends! It's going to be BLISS!

you can tell I'm happy hey?

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 15:30

, tas. i'm not s. african, but that sounds nice, except for that redbush tea, though

tasjaSAmuminUK · 24/01/2008 15:31

Sal22, congrats on you LO! I was in the same boat as you! My mum couldn't come to UK, her holiday works in a weird way, cant take holiday in firts 6 months of year. DD due date was 22/06/06.
She arrived 20/05/06. So MIL came up to visit for a month. When DD was 4 1/2 months old we went to SA to meet the rest of the oumas and oupas.

Mommywillwin, when are you going back?

tasjaSAmuminUK · 24/01/2008 15:32

expatinscotland, yeah, it is something you have to get use to, the redbush. must admit, I'm off the redbush for a while now, like the normal tea better for some reason.

ajandjjmum · 24/01/2008 15:39

Well we'll be visited SA for the first time in July - can't wait!!

tasjaSAmuminUK · 24/01/2008 15:46

Cool, where are you going?

Sal22 · 27/01/2008 11:40

hi - sorry i've been so quiet! cool thread btw. yes, we found out it's a boy, so can now start buying boy-specific things for him! I had to laugh when we had the scan (4d one) - he started off all shy, didn't want to show his face, but when it got to "that" region he was more than happy to flash it in our faces. Even the doctor started laughing! Boys, hey. I've now bought my mom's ticket, so getting all excited about her visit now that it's "final". I've been a bit rubbish with buying baby stuff - for some reason just can't stand the shops at the moment (at least good for the budget i guess...), but planned to at least go out today to the shops to decide on a cot, pram etc. But then garage didn't finish car in time (in for service) and i don't fancy the train today, so that's another weekend for you. If I continue this way poor LO's going to sleep on the ground! Plan now is for next saturday, and have full day antenatal class on Sunday. Take care and hope everyone has a good weekend/week ahead.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 28/01/2008 13:23

Congrats on a boy Sal22!

Sal22 · 28/01/2008 17:44

Thanks a lot tasja! I'm getting really excited now (can't ignore the bump anymore...), think it's going to be a long 3 months. I got a bit of a scare today when one of my colleages (hmm, spelling looks a bit suspicious but too lazy to look it up now) told me about her nephew who was born prematurely, drs missed something wrong with his retina (apparently quite common with premies) and now there's a chance that he'll be blind permanently. How horrible. They're now frantically trying to arrange the operation needed, but he's 4 months now and chances on recovery best before 6 weeks. I was am sad for them, but hopefully all will work out all right.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 28/01/2008 17:52

Sorry to hear about you colleage's nephew's baby! that must be so hard. Hope that everything will work out for them.
I'm getting excited now. 26 days left. I'm packing all our stuff we want to ship over. I don't know what to do with my clothes. I must pack for the summer and winter as my other clothes will only arrive end of July! and I can only take 20kg, flying with SAA.

Mitchell81 · 29/01/2008 11:36

I'm a South African living in Scotland, been here since 2000. Have 2 DC and another one on the way, due in May. Went back for Christmas for a holiday, but still wouldn't go back to live there. But I have my parents and sister living within a mile of us, so I am lucky.
Good luck to those who are moving back, I hope you enjoy the weather. (only thing I miss and the familiarity(sp?)

annwoo · 30/01/2008 13:49

tasjaSAmuminuk,
Also moving to Cape Town (but in December). Dh is S.A. Can I ask you who you are using to ship your stuff over? And how much it costs - if it is not too cheeky. At least you will hit some sun when you get there. Have you heard about all the electricity cuts over there though?
Good luck with the move.

Sal22 · 30/01/2008 14:11

My brother and SIL lives in Cape Town, and their electr. (as all of SA's) seems to be very, uhm, well, part-time lately. My poor SIL (6 months pregnant) had to take the stairs to her office on the 17th (!!! - sure it would have killed me, but then, maybe I'm just really really unfit lately) floor, as once the generators kick in it apparently takes some time before the lifts work again... Guess that's one way to stay fit!

Though, most people seems to be coping ok with it (ignoring the massive loss to the economy for a sec), so I guess once you're forced into a situation you kind of adapt, so just be prepared for it. I'm jealous of everyone having some proper sunshine soon! Enjoy.
