So we recently had a fantastic childfree few days in manhattan for his 40th, what a brilliant place we enthused... he gets chatting to a pal and before you know it we're into second interviews for a job over there. No decision from the company until next week but my head is spinning. What do I need to know before he starts negotiations?
We have 2 DD, age 4 & 10 (youngest due to start reception in September). What salary would he need to earn for us to rent in Brooklyn? What's even a good bit of Brooklyn to live in?
We've done a Big Move before, from London to Manchester, and couldn't have coped without help from the mumsnet hive mind, so am seeking whatever guidance or pointers you have!
Currently looking at my dishevelled house in despair, how on earth will I get it rent-able...
And I'll have to resign from work.
And I'll have to step down as President of my WI...
Excited! And scared! Help!

If Brooklyn rents put you off, try Jersey City. It is just as close as Brooklyn, just on the other side of Manhattan. 10 minute commute to some parts of Manhattan. It was a bit rough 20 years ago like Brooklyn but it's now filling up with fancy preschools and vegan donut shops just like Brooklyn.

Harriedharriet · 04/05/2017 05:06

We were in NYC. I was an "Alien Spouse" 😅😅
Research schools FIRST. NYC has amazing public (as in State) schools. However, they are centered in certain areas so proceed carefully. Like you and most others we trotted off to Brooklyn to have a look. After two hours we know we could not afford it at all! Ended up in Manhattan, Upper (very far Upper 😅) East Side. Spoilt for choice for schools, parks every where, children's school friends were all around the neighborhood and it was a very positive experience. Every so often we took a tourist jaunt over to Brooklyn to have a look at the trendies!
Hope it works out. PM me is you need any further info.

Teapot is tax higher in New Jersey?

Want2bSupermum · 04/05/2017 09:51

I live here, in Hoboken, with 3DC. You need to sort your visas first. Ideally he can start in the U.K. and transfer over on an L1/L2 visa.

It's not cheap living here. Just signed kids up for four swim classes and they cost $140 for each child. The classes are 30min each. This is the 'cheap' option.

Take one step at a time. Get the visa set up and your package agreed. You need about $200k a year to be ok and in a descent area. If you want Brooklyn with good schools you would need more. $200k is doable for upper most parts of Manhattan as well as downtown Jersey City and Hoboken.

Want2bSupermum · 04/05/2017 09:51

Tax is lower in New Jersey. Savings are minimal for me though.

Harriedharriet · 04/05/2017 13:50

Waving to supermum!
It is crazy expensive! I found that it appears cost effective but once you add on all the hidden costs including tips it is on a par with other places!

Want2bSupermum · 04/05/2017 15:40

harriet So very true. The first glance always looks cheaper and then you get the bill. Kids activities are extremely expensive as is food. For a family of four budget $1000 at the supermarket.

Good grief!

That is $1000 a month..... Bloody iphone didn't keep up with me!

topsmart · 05/05/2017 09:28

Mini no-news update: the company will be speaking to his agent on Monday. That's a hopeful sign that they're going to offer something but goodness knows what. We'll just have to forget about it for the weekend!

There is a summer slow down between memorial and Labor Day. Be careful of the momentum slowing to a standstill.

MovingtoUSmum · 08/05/2017 17:35

Hello,
Just spotted your post, thanks to one poster for linking my thread to yours.
We're still make our preparations to move to NY at the end of the year. The advice on here was great.
Hope it all goes well for you.

topsmart · 08/05/2017 22:32

Ah glad all going well.
No news here. New company based in Asia so tricky talking with his agent based in LA...

Will report back if and when we have news.
I am so impatient. I want it all sorted one way or the other right now!

Oh it's horrible having to wait isn't it. I hope everything works out for you - please do keep us posted. Oh and if you have any questions about living in the US, please let me know - though I am west coast

MovingtoUSmum · 09/05/2017 09:44

We booked our flights last night to go out to New York next month and starting looking at areas and schools in Westchester County so got a little bit of excitement creeping in now. Felt nothing but nerves so far but it's actually happening so got to embrace it, right?!

alteredimages · 09/05/2017 09:56

Good luck topsmart, and I hope things work out.

It was a very very long time ago, and so my advice is probably useless, but we moved to the US on an O1 visa back in the day when Congress had imposed a limit on H1 visas. Dad is definitely not a superstar and was not being recruited into a particularly senior role. I think it mostly depends on how good the immigration lawyer who deals with the application is and how they are able to present your DH's skills and abilities. If the company is large enough and committed enough they will hopefully invest in a good lawyer.

Want2bSupermum · 09/05/2017 23:13

movingtoUS It is absolutely terrifying to move so far away. Just know that the language is actually quite different, the culture is absolutely alien and overall everything is 'bigger'.

BritInUS1 · 11/05/2017 14:47

I've been thinking of you. Have you heard from them yet?

I agree with Want2b - the language in America is actually very different and everything takes some getting used to

topsmart · 14/05/2017 09:13

Hi Brit and everyone, thanks for thinking of me! Things have been delayed while they negotiate more senior positions - it'll apparently definitely be this Monday that they talk to his agent... sigh... seems a distant dream that it might all actually happen but still a possibility!

OP posts:
topsmart · 15/05/2017 15:59

Okay. So a formal offer is finally on the table. And it's good. So now to negotiate what it covers / moving costs yada yada yada. Cripes it might actually happen. Scared now!

Years ago we lived in Great Neck on Long Island for 3 years. There are some lovely towns along the North Shore (Great Gatsby was set there) & the Long Island Railroad is a pretty good service into Penn Station.

I know nothing about schools there but it's another suburban area to consider.

It all sounds very exciting - good luck! Smile

Want2bSupermum · 15/05/2017 16:26

Good news then. Feel free to ask questions about the offer. It's important it's right on the front end.

BrigitteTrogneux64 · 15/05/2017 17:46

What's the salary?
I can be of no help whatsoever but am very nosy - and envious 😀
