Oh, I was coming on to say the Netherlands. We spent 5 great years there. What do you not like about it?

goodiegoodieyumyum · 18/12/2014 18:45

Pinkhe we didn't choose to live here we moved fir my husbands work. Although there us much I like, I find the language difficult and find Dutch people mostly speak english to me or completely ignore me. The total lack if consideration for others is my biggest problem, I get this is a cultural thing, but it is something I dont want to live with for the rest if my life. I really dont want to bash the Netherlands one thing I do realuse is the grass in never greener somewhere else.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I think the answer to your question depends on your priorities be that kids' education, job opportunities, weather or how important it is to get back to the UK in a hurry.

I've only experienced Netherlands and Scotland and I am happy with both.

barnet · 18/12/2014 19:02

Considering what you think of the Netherlands, give Norway a miss! It is even worse in those terms. But great in other ways.

goodiegoodieyumyum · 18/12/2014 19:06

Pinkje I am originally from Australia, my DH is Danish, but I do have family in the UK as well. My dd 6 wants to live somewhere warm, I would prefer somewhere I could speak English, but am willing to try to learn another language, we are quite open to where we live, that is why I would like to hear other people's ideas and experiences.

We are in the UAE and love it!

oneflewoutofthecrazynest · 18/12/2014 20:12

Dh is in the oil and gas sector and we are looking to move in 2 year approx but trying to decide where to go to. We are in Scotland at the min but i struggle with the long dark winters and hate the cold. The market is not good at the min and i am hoping it will pick up by the time we look to move. We are not expats here both dh, ds and I are all UK nationals.

Laptopwieldingharpy · 18/12/2014 21:02

What industry?

goodiegoodieyumyum · 18/12/2014 21:28

He works in credit control, putting systems in place as well as controls I think he could work in any industry.

Great that opens up a lot of possibilies.
Am in Asia and although options are scarce at this time of year, it should pick up again after Chinese New Year around end February.
Would you consider going this far? Are you looking for something a bit "exotic"? Expat packages tend to be shrinking but still good and very low taxes.

Aebj · 19/12/2014 03:05

We are in Australia and I love it . 39 and sunny today . Pool and beach later ??

Threeplus1 · 19/12/2014 03:14

I'm in Canada - Toronto to be exact and, if you don't mind a longish, cold winter, you get beautifully hot summers, great outdoor life in all seasons, safe but cosmopolitan city, great schools, lots of affordable opportunities for kids, and low crime rates. And most people speak English (though french is the other official language).

Coyoacan · 19/12/2014 03:43

Threeplus I lived in Toronto many many years ago and I found people in general quite cold. You could go for months without saying a word to anyone, outside of friends and family. Though that is so long ago now that it has probably all changed now.

Kakaka · 19/12/2014 03:58

We like New Zealand. Doesn't have the extreme temperatures of Australia but you get a decent summer most years and the people are very considerate. If you open a map on the street people stop and offer to help.

goodiegoodieyumyum · 19/12/2014 07:47

I would live Canada, Asia, Australia, very open to many times laces in the world. We are lucky my DH has been at his company a ling time so financially we will be Ok and have time to think about and explore our options.

Learning another language can be fun if you are in a country where people are supportive and helpful.
But what are your priorities, OP? For example I live in Mexico and love it, but a Canadian friend of mine and even some Mexicans don't like the lack of order and control compared to other countries.

goodiegoodieyumyum · 19/12/2014 18:28

Coyoacan, One of my priorities is to be in a country where I feel safe and know my children will be able to access a good education.

sleepdodger · 19/12/2014 19:14

gas - perth??

goodiegoodieyumyum · 19/12/2014 19:29

It is a possibility, although I believe the market is not too good at the miment, I have experience in the energy industry.

Coyoacan · 19/12/2014 23:11

Well count Mexico out then, at the moment the educational system has gone to the dogs and though I feel safe in Mexico City, security in the rest of the country is a disaster.

Hope you find somewhere lovely!

fatowl · 20/12/2014 08:59

Another vote for the Far East (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand)
It's a long way from Europe, but it's a good standard of living and English is widely spoken. International schools are plentiful and of a good standard.
Lots of travel opportunities.

Gfplux · 20/12/2014 16:20

Why not look just down the road.... Luxembourg.

chloeb2002 · 20/12/2014 19:28

We are happy to in Aus. Brisbane. I wouldn't fancy Perth (sorry) a long way from anywhere. Increasing social issues and financial complexities from mining fluctuations.
