(Classic?) French films for 14 year olds

Hi posting here in the hope of more 'traffic'.

Could anyone please recommend some classic French films for 14 year old English children (boys and girls).

The teens concerned are native English speakers and French learners. Their level of French isn't high but they are generally intelligent and have a basic understanding of the language. (Presumably many films have sub-titles anyway.) Don't want anything too risqué as I am a godparent to one of the children concerned!

Any suggestions gratefully received! Thank you!

Oh, and la reine margot! Reminding me of films I watched 25 odd years ago!

Stewedcoot · 05/09/2014 19:56

Thank you both!

Hattymattie I thought of 'Les choristes' but doesn't it have a sub-theme of sexual abuse (could be confusing it with something else though given my addled brain)? Will definitely check out the other two though!

TheSteveMilliband Two more to go on the list - thank you!

Stew - can't remember anything about sexual abuse - I know everybody's kids watched it so there cannot have been any overt scenes - maybe watch it just in case my memory fails me but I'm pretty sure it's suitable.

Not exactly a classic, but surely something a 14 yr old would enjoy is A Town Called Panic...? Or would that be too childish, or too surreal?

pinkhousesarebest · 06/09/2014 13:03

Le Petit Nicholas and the recent sequel (can't remember). Etre et Avoir maybe, slow moving and easier to understand.

missmajestic · 06/09/2014 13:53

My favourite French film is Bienvenue Les Ch'tis with Dany Boon. It's hilarious, I still laugh out loud now when I think of certain bits of it (and I haven't seen it for ages).

Stewedcoot · 06/09/2014 13:56

I would like to have a copy of Les Choristes Hatty so will check it out in advance. (ONly need to have films sorted by mid Oct)

Oh yes, I remember Etre et Avoir - thanks Pink

Haven't heard of a Town called Panic but will investigate - thanks GlaceCherries

This thread is incredibly helpful - thank you!

petit nicolas

Branleuse · 06/09/2014 14:00

my 13year old ds watched amelie the other day.
i know its 15 but i didnt think it had anything particularly inappropriate in it

Bue · 06/09/2014 17:14

I saw Le gloire de mon pere and Le chateau de ma mere at that age and loved them both.

Les choristes definitely doesn't have any sexual abuse in it!

kitkatsfordinner · 06/09/2014 19:11

LEs Choristes is lovely one of my favourite films!

Stewedcoot · 07/09/2014 15:08

I agree that Amelie would be fine! The only thing I can remember that is mildly risque, is a couple of fried eggs jiggling on a hot plate suggestively ...!!

Thank you Bue excellent to have age appropriate ideas!!

I think I must be mistaking les Choristes for something else then! (Although reading the Wikipedia summary there does seem to be a bit of physical violence in it. Will have to view it to reassure myself)

Thank you everyone again for your suggestions - much, much appreciated!

Cereal0ffender · 07/09/2014 19:09

I thought Amelie would be fine to watch with dd but there is one sex scene

Stewedcoot · 07/09/2014 22:13

Oh thanks CerealOffender my memory is obviously seriously dodgy!

OP posts:
Cereal0ffender · 07/09/2014 22:23

Better i tell you than breaking your neck to get to the off button as Amelie's breasts and whimisical look bounce gently atop of some man

Stewedcoot · 07/09/2014 22:29

Definitely Grin

Branleuse · 09/09/2014 12:07

There is an implied sex scene in Amelie, but you dont see anything, and it didnt phaze ds

Cereal0ffender · 09/09/2014 16:49

Really? I remember her neck kid bouncing on top of someone

Cereal0ffender · 09/09/2014 16:50
I remembered it wrong but enough to raise an eyebrow
EmGee · 10/09/2014 14:27

No offence to you, harry, but your bottom two suggestions are most definitely NOT appropriate for OP's age group of kids!!!!

tb · 12/09/2014 17:55

While you're looking at Louis de Funès films, there is also L'aile ou la cuisse which is concerned with the Duchemin guide which bears more than a passing resemblance to the Michelin guide. It's very funny, especially when we can remember French restaurants from the 80s that were probably just like one on the film behind the scenes.

Also a recent film, but maybe for in a year or two is Vive la France. It's about a small country called Taboulistan who decide that their national dish, taboulé, should be attributed to the country where it was invented. They decide the best way to do this is via terrorism and train their crack troops for the job in hand. 2 of them set off with the intent of blowing up the Eiffel tower and have some very funny mishaps along the way, including landing in the middle of a demonstration in Marseilles.
