Hi Flum, I have lived in both Hilversum 4 years and Almere, Almere Buiten to be accurate, although I liked Hilversum, I love Almere Buiten. We have been here three months now yes it is an urban sprawl but with that you can have space yes space a unheard of thing in many parts of the Netherlands. Yes it may be a bit further out from Amsterdam but not much. The transport links are fantastic, bus lanes for buses no cars much of the time, trains very regular and to many places.
The Oostvaarders natures reserve ( five minutes from where I live) is fantastic for birds and wild animals including a herd of horses if you like that kind of thing. There is lovely park called Kemphaan there are monkeys and a garden center with small animals to visit not so much a garden centre as somewhere to go and see lizards birds and rabbits, a maze, a climbing centre with a little beach perfect for children, my dd loves it, an apiary, a cafe, a restaurant, play ground, this is all free. There are also many outdoor play areas some for older children and some for younger. There are several lovely beaches in Almere, Almere Stad has a huge shopping centre, plus the other suburbs of Almere all have there own shopping centres.
The International school is near Almere Poort I am not that sure what is is like but there does seem to be a lot of buliding going on. Obviously not all of Almere is the same it is at least 18 kilometere long, we saw lot's of houses before we found our perfect one. 4 bedrooms a large for the Netherlands front garden and decent sized back garden. This was nearly 400 euros cheaper a month than our 2 bedroom house in Hilversum which
Hilversum lots of nice architecture, Media park, Sportspark, companies to work for Like NIke, but if you want a swimming pool that is suitable for small children to splash about in you need to go to Bussum, soft play Bussum or Loosdrecht if you have no car then all by public transport which depending where you are in Hilversum the buses are not always easy sometime 2 - 3 changes to go a small distance and the one way system makes it much harder to get around by car.had a tiny front garden and tiny back garden.
Where we used to live was a great location walking distance to the town centre also a whole row of shops 5 minutes from our house. There is an International mums and Tots group plus a meet up group which I belong to. ( Almere also have an International playgroups and also an International group you can join to meet people.) Moving further out town in Hilversum does not mean you will get more for your money although house generally are bigger. It is also not that wasy to find rental property in Hilversum but you could be lucky. Unless you want to buy of course, then you will probably have a bit of choice.
There is a British shop in Hilversum callled Linda Little Britain, Linda is a lovely lady and if she doesn't have what you want you can ask her and often she will be able to get it for you.
My dd attends Dutch school she spoke no Netherlands 19 months ago now she fluent and was fairly quickly.
Yes it can be expensive to live here, I buy a lot from Amazon, using supersaver delivery, which is normally free over 25.00 pounds. Also Tesco. Marks and Spence and Next all deliver here so sometimes I but from them as well it can be worht the postage.
If you and your husband both work you get tax rebates for child care, you will get family allowance for children something I would not get if we lived in the UK.
Hope this helps I will try to think of anything I can tell you
