Wenn es im Winter stürmt und schneit, haben wir eine Flasche Glühwein allzeit bereit - life in Germany and Austria

As I couldn't find a suitable poem mentioning Glühwein, I composed my own. Please don't laugh. Grin

All welcome - anyone living in Germany, Austria or anywhere else who would like to chat.

Later, that's exactly how I felt when I stopped breastfeeding ds - I started to enjoy feeding time and felt as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

The decoration thing is confusing isn't it. I'll always remember having people round from a toddler group one advent and the mums weren't interested in showing their dc our tree (that had been up for ages) as it would upset their dc! We all sat in the kitchen!

That's next on my list I suppose - getting a tree. I usually get a small tree as I can't face the chore of dragging it to the collection point leaving a trail of needles falling off when Christmas is over. A nice small one that gets thrown off the balcony and fits in the car boot to be disposed of does me nicely!

LinzerTinsel · 06/12/2011 10:20

Yes, that's exactly what I want Canella. I being the operative word... so I don't really feel I can get one for DH as it's not him wanting to listen to Radio 2 or 4! And he hasn't got an iPod either... At least I know what to ask for for my birthday now (if I can hold out that long)!

Glad to hear you had such a good time with your visitors - I felt quite flat after our friends left a few weeks ago, but Glühwein always helps to cheer me up! Hope you can get the cups soon; how annoying that the buyer wouldn't send them to you after all.

Later I didn't even realise there was a difference between Advent and Christmas decorations. Basteling your own Adventkranz is quite popular here (I tried it once and the result was laughable, so it's back to Lidl ones for us), but otherwise most people don't have many Advent/Christmas decorations up yet. And I'm Blush to admit that your FIL sounds rather like me (and DH does the switching off). Your MIL OTOH sounds like the exact opposite to mine!

Re the Christkind/Weihnachtsmann - it's only really the Christkind here, although the Weihnachtmann is becoming more popular (but looked down on as an import from Germany who is driving away the religious aspect Hmm). He/She/It (am never quite sure exactly what the Christkind is meant to represent) brings the tree on Christmas Eve, decorates it and leaves all the presents underneat; the children aren't allowed to see it until it's all finished and a bell rings to let them know the Christkind has been. Us having a tree up several weeks before Christmas Shock would possibly shatter Austrian children's illusions (unless it is explained to them that the British Christkind plays by different rules).

I am a bit Hmm about the Christkind bringing all the presents, although this may be more to do with my attitude towards my ILs than anything else. We were never allowed to thank each other for presents within earshot of DH's niece and nephew and they would take the gift tags off presents from my parents to them as soon as they could read. DD1 was a little confused for a while about why she got presents from my family but never from DH's (as all the presents at my ILs' come from the Christkind), but the presents that they've got from us have always been from us and not from the Christkind.

LaterAlligator · 06/12/2011 10:31

Ah it all sounds far too complicated! The tree goes up when you are feeling suitably festive, presents are delivered by Father Christmas (he picks presents up from relatives etc & delivers them so you still know who they are from and can thank the giver) and mince pies and Christmas cake are acceptable breakfast foods during the month of December.

I think a lot of Germans see the Weihnachtsmann as an import from the US who is driving away the religious aspect! That's the impression I get anyway.
As far as I can tell there isn't a difference between Advent & Christmas decorations, they are just put up in Adventzeit and later become Christmas decorations or something. I obviously didn't follow DH's explanation at all Blush

Time to think of a festive name....

RudolphtherednosedGator · 06/12/2011 10:36

I've ordered an internet radio for DH for Christmas - he's been talking about one for ages. We don't always get each other a present (last year we bought a new sofa) but I've been talking very loudly about a Kindle lately.....

admysteltoe · 06/12/2011 10:48

I need a radio in my kitchen but haven't really got much room to put it anywhere so it has to be small. Who knows, I might get some money from Father Christmas (as I have been very well behaved) and then I can get myself one in the sale in January! I'd also like my own netbook, smart phone and need a new winter coat but have I to be realistic and don't think I was that well behaved or that the Weihnachtsman is so rich!

Canella, that's strange with the cup, I thought she'd agreed to send or has she maybe got the whole set and is selling them off one by one and yours is on the way to you?

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 06/12/2011 11:07

Thanks everyone for the suggestions of where to buy cellophane bags. Unfortunately we don't have any of those shops here (except Aldi), but I found them easily this morning in Müller.

I haven't been baking as much as stirring. I made some vanilla fudge on Friday and have just made a batch of chocolate. I'm not sure how successful this second batch has been, since I don't have a sugar thermometer and hadn't made any fudge since I was at primary school. The vanilla batch is slightly too soft, so I tried to leave this one a bit longer. I also couldn't beat it as long, which at least had the disadvantage advantage of there being less wastage left in the pan. At least the Germans I give it to won't know how it's supposed to be Wink.

admylin I seem to have befriended you on FB yesterday (wasn't sure who it was at the time, but knew the M&S jealousy had to be someone from this thread!) Just wanted to let you know it was me in case you hadn't worked it out yet.

Grin MIL just dropped by and handed me several packets of cellophane bags. I guess I've got enough for next Christmas too now.

admysteltoe · 06/12/2011 11:14

I thought it might be you! When I see that mutual friends are Linzer and Canella then I know atleast it's someone from our thread!

Looks like it's not just me - so the hockey kit is expensive. It's annoying just before Christmas too but I'm going to have to get her it this week as there are some other matches soon.

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 06/12/2011 11:52

Have just added someone else who appears to have a baby Smile. Later?

I really do have more urgent things to do than go through friend lists looking for people with 3 mutual friends...

RudolphtherednosedGator · 06/12/2011 11:54

Ooh Silken I shall check now.... (Pinned to the sofa by said baby so have all the time in te world to knock about on Facebook!)

LinzerTinsel · 06/12/2011 12:34

But it's great fun, silken. Grin Btw admylin and I have quite a lot of mutual friends from our Farmville days - are you still playing, admylin? - so anyone with only two mutual friends is likely to be a non-German-thread MNer. I think around three quarters of my friends on FB must be MNers, but it's also great for keeping in touch with friends back in the UK and other countries.

CindersHasAGrottyMansion · 06/12/2011 13:26

Flipping heck
is cold in this house,

ds is actually in a good mood,

till the battle with homework

admysteltoe · 06/12/2011 13:33

No Linzer, it's when I see the 29 mutual friends that I know they must be mners from the farmville days and just you and canella it must be a german-threader!

Cinders are you the one with the huge mansion?! I also feel cold in my place and fondly remember the cosy warm days in our 2 room flat a couple of winters ago.

admysteltoe · 06/12/2011 13:43

Lol, just read your name properly, you do live in a mansion!

CindersHasAGrottyMansion · 06/12/2011 13:56

lol

Smile

tis very grotty

but have found an old postcard of it online
when it was in its prime

all it has now is a prime location for some

platanos · 06/12/2011 14:01

cinders....where do you live? I am also seeking refuge from the Huasaufgaben struggles...dd1 doing her maths with fountain pen, dd2 has found a Tintenkiller in her bag and is trying to "killer es aus". "es" being dd1s homework. grrr

And they have both come back with Nikolosackelrn FULL of chocolate and..look away Linzer...lollipops. grrr...

back to the battlefield....

Canella · 06/12/2011 14:25

Our homework time was painless today - not sure why some days are worse than others. Sending positive homework vibes to cinders and platanos.Smile

I dont have any other MN/FB friends apart from people on this thread. I dont post regularly enough on other threads to know anyone. I am a chronic lurker tho!

But I had a FB disaster yesterday - a friend in the UK commented on my status, then one of the visitors who had been here made a double entendre joke about it and she took offense at me! I messaged her to explain the joke but she's so annoyed she's not replied. (altho she has previous for giving people the silent treatment - really am wondering tho why any adult acts like this rather than taking an apology/explanation and moving on!).feels like being back in the playground. But the rest of the time I love FB - love it for keeping in touch with people who I dont see regularly.
Better go and see what the boys are up to - there's banging coming from upstairs......

Canella · 06/12/2011 14:28

admylin - its the same cup she's selling again. She just didnt want to sell it to us so relisted it but the end of the bid was 6 days after it started. Dragging it out a bit! She knows we'll buy it so no idea why we have to wait so long.

hupa · 06/12/2011 14:42

I must admit I haven´t got a facebook account - I´m a bit of a luddite about social networks. I´ve never even got as far as putting a profile up on here. Maybe it could be my New Year´s resolution.

Well Nikolaus passed off fairly peacefully and the dc both have friends round this afternoon, so I´m encouraging them to share as much of the chocolate as possible.

I do find the whole Nikolaus/Christkind/Weihnachtsmann thing a bit confusing. We´ve only ever talked about the Weihnachtsman (and Father Christmas who brings a stocking on the 25th), but ds´s teacher has got the class to write a wish list to the Christkind. This completely confused ds, so I told him that the Christkind will pass his list on to the Weihnachtsmann and he seemed happy with that. Mind you he won´t tell me what´s on the list and says he doesn´t need to write a list at home because the Weihnachtsmann always brings something good. Let´s hope he won´t be disappointed.

Later your post has made me want to try making fudge. I used to make it a lot as a child, but haven´t tried again for years.

hupa · 06/12/2011 14:44

Sorry ladder not Later I´m getting confused with the Christmas names

5moreminutes · 06/12/2011 15:00

Sorry to hear about all the Nikalaus stress that's been going on!

I almost forgot to fill the boots as we had much vomiting going on here yesterday evening and last night, on the part of dd and ds2 - both got another bug, having barely shaken the last one :( I went downstairs in the middle of the night and put a DVD each for dd and ds1, and some Milka choc santas in thier boots (well my winter boots) and a new rustly, squeaky rattle in my smaller "dressy" ankle boot for ds2 (so the older 2 wouldn't question why he'd been left out). This seemed to do the trick and they were both very happy this morning, (the DVDs were 'Cars2' and Alice in Wonderland so no ambiguity about whose was whose and both things they've been asking and asking for). Nikalaus was at both school and KiGa but gave out only fruit, nuts and one Lebküchen per child (Bavaria, countryside) which they were also happy with - KiGa allows sweet items in Brotzeit (though they have guidelines saying every child should have bread and fruit every day and that they shouldn't have the same thing every day... but school doesn't officially, though I don't think it is policed at school.

DD went to school despite being sick yesterday eve - I walked her in and knocked on her classroom door and asked her teacher if she was allowed, as she was desperate to go as she'd been picked to sing a duet for the first verse of a song for Nikalaus's arrival. Her teacher said she could try, and it was fine - that would never be allowed in the UK where they always seem to have th 48 hour rule about sick! Funny that they ban kids who have nits but allow ones with germs... I hope she hasn't passed it on, but the way I see it she was already contagious yesterday as most things are most contagious just before you get symptoms, and she was at school yesterday.

Homework was OK here today as dd wasn't allowed to watch Alice until it was done!

Glad you're feeling better about feeding ds Later - nobody could say you didn't give bf your best shot, and you managed for quite a while, almost 3 months isn't it?

We had a tiny bit of snow but it is really wet out so hardly any is sticking, just a few bits on roofs etc. Kids are being quite annoying atm as it is too wet to play outside, I have banned any more tv as we have watched both nikalaus DVDs already (DS watched his before KiGa) and banned dd from calling for anyone as she says she is too ill for football so I said then she needs to stay home and rest not be out, but it means she and ds are bickering alternately with playing together...

Here the Christkind doesn't put the tree up, we decorate it with the kids on Christmas eve morning, then the Christkind comes while we are having a special mini English Christmas dinner - luckily we have a separate kitchen and dining room, don't know how all the open plan people (which seems to be most locally) manage it...

We have a few decorations up, I'm not into masses of decorations, but I like not having the tree up til Christmas eve. I thought we did it the "normal" way locally, but I am often clueless Xmas Grin next door have full chav style lights all over their house and inflatable santa etc. etc. (she says snobbishly ...) and have had since first Sunday of advent.

We cut our tree at a forest Christmas market the weekend before Christmas and store it in the garage to dry out for a few days - don't know what people who buy them early do with them, though businesses etc have them up earlier of course...Xmas Hmm

platanos · 06/12/2011 15:03

battle over here...thanks canella. Hope the banging was nothing too serious, and that the silent treatment ends soon. Btw I now want an internet radio...I miss Radio 4 SO much. I know I can get it on the computer, but still...

cinders - still struggling?

hupa glad to hear that Nikolaus can be peaceful, there is hope!

call from dd to help with cleaning her room...i was meant to just bring something to the room where the computer is and thought I could slip in some mnetting...

LinzerTinsel · 06/12/2011 15:25

Hi Cinders, good to see another Austrian returning to the fold. Smile We should try and have an Austrian meet-up if you're free in the first week of January. I probably owe you an e-mail, don't I? Sorry, am losing track of everything in my old age.

Noooo, not lollipops, platanos! DS's Nikolosackerl from KiGa wasn't actually too bad - a chocolate St Nicholas (already eaten), an apple (half eaten), and some tangerines and nuts.

Canella Your friend's reaction seems a bit OTT, esp. if you've apologised. It doesn't sound like you can do much more than wait for her to get over it. It's strange that the eBay seller has relisted the cup when she didn't get any bids last time; why wouldn't she sell it to you, I wonder? And didn't she agree to sell it to you initially - did she then change her mind?

hupa I only have a very basic profile on here but don't really want to put up too much more information as anyone could look at it. FB feels a bit more private (as long as you have security settings in place) and it's very handy for keeping in touch with people; I probably use it more than e-mails now.

Must pin down DD1 and get her to revise for her Sachunterrichtstest tomorrow. She got her German Schularbeit back yesterday - another 3. We haven't ruled out Gymnasium completely as DD1 still wants to go and look at it, but I'm glad she hasn't got her heart set on it as we'd really be feeling the pressure now that she's only got 3s and one 4 in this semester's Schularbeiten.

admysteltoe · 07/12/2011 07:56

Well, we didn't get the gingerbread house made yesterday! Both dc went and had an afternoon sleep, they're exhausted at the moment, then homework and far too much chocolate, marzipan and lebkuchen from their Nikolausstiefel, then dd went in a foul mood because her maths homework wasn't easy so we cancelled! We'll try again on Friday.

LinzerTinsel · 07/12/2011 09:01

Stressful afternoon yesterday here too. The first English lesson was fine, the second... well, it was OK once I'd persuaded the two boys that we should start, but I'm just Angry at how little respect they have for me.

One of them plus his older sister stayed until 7 pm, by which time I had the DC ready for bed - only for DD1 to suddenly remember she still had a page of maths homework to do (which she then did, but got every single one wrong). I'd also located some photocopied pages of her Sachunterrichtsheft in the meantime for her to revise from. DH then arrived home, was not at all happy about how little DD1 had done, and spent the next hour or so revising and explaining maths to her.

I attempted to cheer myself up by ordering my new iPhone - DH wasn't in a great mood, but it was the last day of the no-activation-fee offer. I still haven't told him that another of the bannisters has been pulled off the wall (he's just under strict instructions not to go up to the top floor until he's in a better mood!). He was so annoyed about the last one, which he's only just mended. DS's friends (and possibly DS himself, although I'm sure he doesn't any more) apparently try to swing on them - I've never seen it happen, but I can well believe it. Yesterday DD2's friend was leaning on one; it must have been slightly loose already as I can't imagine she would have swung on it. I think we need CCTV.

Canella · 07/12/2011 10:33

sounds like a stressful afternoon linzer. Why did they stay so long - I'd never leave my dc at someone's till 7 unless it was a party.
Am very jealous of you getting an iphone. I want one! My mobile is also on its last legs and I am getting a new mobile for Christmas but I really doubt it'll be an iphone since I dont want a contract phone and doubt dh would pay the full price for it. And I dont need it one since I have the ipod touch but thats not stopping my jealousy. Did you go and look round the gymnasium - it seems you've got a good idea to keep an open mind about it.

admylin - how did you persuade them to have a sleep - even when mine are nearly dropping they still wont lie down.

5more - hope the vomiting demons have gone.

The FB friend sent a big email to apologise for being so stroppy. Glad its all cleared up - I hate having any uneasiness with anyone. And dh won the bid (obviously) for the cup so it should be winging its way to us soon.

DS2 is going to my IL's for a few days - need to do the halfway drive again after kiga but its worth it for a few days peace - the fighting between the boys is getting me down at the moment. Have to make plans for one of them to be out the house most afternoons or for us all to go out which is getting more difficult when the weather is rubbish. And he'll have a great time with Oma and Opa - probably more fun than being here with me shouting at him for fighting. Sad.

The Nikolaus party was good but a bit stressful - they'd made a bonfire at a clearing next to a lake but in the dark it was quuite hard to see where the edge of the lake was so I spent the whole time paranoid they were going to fall in! And when we got home I realised how muddy they had both got - and they needed those jackes this morning - ds1 only has 1 warm jacket. Cue much washing and hanging over radiators. And ds2 needs his winter boots to go to my IL's today and they were caked in mud. That wasnt a fun job to do this morning.

Better go and finish packing his bag - I'm supposed to leave in an hour.
