Wenn es im Winter stürmt und schneit, haben wir eine Flasche Glühwein allzeit bereit - life in Germany and Austria

As I couldn't find a suitable poem mentioning Glühwein, I composed my own. Please don't laugh. Grin

All welcome - anyone living in Germany, Austria or anywhere else who would like to chat.

Ladder, when you take the ferry what's it like on the UK side with driving? Do you get used to being on the other side of the road? I don't think I have ever driven in UK so that worries me abit (I did my driving lessons in France and got my first car in Germany). I'd love to go in my car to be able to get more shopping!

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 10:52

admysteltoe The snow is settling nicely - it's a few inches deep already.

ladder The coat is so warm & snug, I'd definitely recommend it. I think Zara deliver.....

Canella I'll have to look into this 'new' airport - it sounds promising!

Canella · 20/12/2011 10:56

Just looked admylin - from Bremen to Manchester is dirty cheap(24€ return). Is that anywhere near you?

I drove last year in the UK and was a bit stressed the first hour but it was soon ok. On the motorway is easier than the little roads since all the traffic guides you. But I learned in England so maybe thats why its easier.

Canella · 20/12/2011 10:57

Its a tiny airport gator but I like that - you get thro quicker!

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 20/12/2011 10:58

I still hold a pen "wrongly" (sticking out between index and middle finger) about half of the time. I don't think it makes any difference to my writing - it's more comfortable to hold it wrongly - but I got endless grief in school about it. Interesting about the cutting with scissor practice being good - DD has just discovered scissors, so I might buy a pair for her stocking.

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 11:02

Ah - it would be a 4 hour drive from here according to Google. Maybe not then :)

Canella · 20/12/2011 11:07

Yeah you need to weigh it up against the price of petrol but since we live nowhere near any airport then I'm always looking for a cheap deal. Best plan is to travel as much as possible before ds is 2 gator then you dont have to pay for him.

ladderinmyxmasstocking · 20/12/2011 11:13

ad I also did my test in the UK. Tbh I much prefer driving a right-hand drive car over there, but I can cope in ours but DH does all the driving. It helps that I know all the roads where my parents live and so am automatically on the right (left) side of the road without thinking. The scariest thing for me about taking the ferry without DH would be driving onto and parking on the ferry itself - very narrow bridge onto the car deck and then men in fluorescent jackets waving at you to park approximately 20 cm behind the car in front.

gator even more tempted now. What's the sizing like at Zara? I would prefer it to be on the big side (Jade on Neighbours wears an oversized parka - anyone else a secret fan of Aussie soaps?), but I don't own anything from Zara to check sizing.

Canella · 20/12/2011 11:19

I agree ladder - that is the scariest part. I was nearly hyperventilating the one time I had to do it on my own. But I love taking the ferry - its like a little adventure. Hope I can persuade dh to drive back this year.

Not seen Neighbours in years ladder but always preferred that to home and away.

Still snowing here and lying but i'm not stressing since its supposed to get warmer again on thurs and rain. It was a nice excuse to stay in this morn.

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 11:37

Every time we have taken the ferry I've made DH drive as I'm a bit scared of driving onto the ferry & lining the wheels up on the ramp thing too. I thought it was just me!

ladder I don't have many things from Zara but the bits I have are on the big side. The parka came in S, M, L, XL I think (as opposed to 34, 36, 38 etc) and the S is quite big on me when in most shops it would fit nicely/be just a little tight.

I haven't watched Neighbours since my twice-a-day habit as a student Blush but it was always my favourite soap! My mum watches Corrie on Canadian tv & I'm quite jealous. Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten just isn't the same!

admysteltoe · 20/12/2011 11:42

Gator, there was a thread on here the other day where people were complaining about the sizes at Zara's (on the small side so they said) and the trousers are all too long! Never been in a zara shop though so no idea.

Canella, thanks for the tip - Bremen would be a possibility for us so I will check that out.

I think I'd manage the driving onto the ferry but that's about it! I'd definately end up stuck on a roundabout! 5more have you done the ferry route that you're taking in May before? What's the traffic like?

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 11:48

How strange, admysteltoe! Maybe I'm the weird one then Grin

AriesWithBellsOn · 20/12/2011 11:48

I live in Cornwall but just wanted to appreciate your German poem!

Sehr gut!

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 12:37

Hi Aries - are you German?

LinzerTinsel · 20/12/2011 13:03

I go away to teach an English lesson and come back to find you've chatted your way through a whole page. Xmas Shock At least I've managed to get rid of a few more mince pies; DD2 ate a whole one, most of the others managed half and the triplets took another three with them for their parents and grandfather.

Thank you Aries - it's the first ever poem I've written in German (and is likely to be my last). Xmas Grin I think I should have left the "eine Flasche" out as one bottle wouldn't be enough it would scan better, but too late now.

Canella Ah yes, I remember now that your DS is a 24th baby too.
You've found some real flight bargains - I think the least we've ever paid with Ryanair is about ?300, but priority boarding and luggage usually adds at least ?100 to the price.

ad Interesting to read about the scissors; I must get DS to cut out more. There's no way he'll be able to write properly the way he holds the pencil - it's hard to explain but imagine giving a pencil to a baby and the way they would curl all their fingers round it: well, that's how he holds it. DD2 was writing quite well (and neatly) when she started school but the teacher still decided that she wasn't holding the pencil the right way and she had to have one of those triangular things that you put on the pencil with indents for the fingers and thumb. DS refuses to use it, however.

Gator Yes, Germans/Austrians may like to think that swearing makes them sound cool but (unless they're native speaker level) it usually has the opposite effect!
Hope your brother's journey isn't affected by the snow; at least they're far more geared up for it here than in the UK.
Neighbours reminds me of my student days too; everyone used to gather in the TV lounge after lunch to watch it on the big screen!

ladder Neger came up in the novel I translated for my dissertation and I asked a German friend about it, as I didn't trust DH's opinion as an Austrian. Xmas Wink (Was quite Xmas Shock to discover that Negerküsse was an acceptable alternative to Schwedenbomben here when we first met, although I think they've been renamed now.) IIRC she said that yes, it was very derogatory - but it may still not be quite as bad as the English term, of course.

AriesWithBellsOn · 20/12/2011 13:10

No I'm Welsh. But I did German A level. Will that be ok?

You popped up in Most Active which is why I crashed your thread. Sorry!

Happy Christmas one and all!

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 13:27

Sorry Aries, I was just being nosey!

Come and join the German/Austrian Christmas fun :)

LinzerTinsel · 20/12/2011 13:28

No problem, Aries - everyone welcome here particularly those who appreciate my poem. Xmas Grin

Say hello to Wales from me; I'll be back there in three days. Xmas Smile Nadolig llawen i chi hefyd!

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 13:32

Linzer Are they called 'Schwedenbomben' in Austria? I like that!
MIL always says 'Farbige' and DH tells her off for it as he says it's offensive (I have no idea when it comes to things like this in German). She refuses to stop saying it as according to her it is what 'they' want to be called (her words, not mine) - they are going to have to agree to disagree one of these days.

I'm glad the mince pies went down well! I need to get on and make some ready for tomorrow - thanks for reminding me!

LinzerTinsel · 20/12/2011 13:52

Yes, the less offensive term for them here is Schwedenbomben - quite what they have to do with Sweden I'm not sure, unless the white bit in the middle is supposed to be like snow. Although I'm not sure Sweden has noticeably more snow than Austria... What are they called in Germany? Have just googled them and ended up even more confused than ever by all the different names. I particularly liked Bumskopf. Xmas Grin

RudolphtherednosedGator · 20/12/2011 13:59

I know them as 'Negerküsse', 'Schokoküsse' or 'Dickmanns' (the brand name).
I hadn't heard Bumskopf but I quite like that and think I will start using that!

Are you all ready for your trip?

I really should be taking advantage of DS' nap & tidying up/preparing for my brother's visit etc but I'm feeling ridiculously lazy & can't seem to tear myself away from my cup of tea and the laptop. It sounds like the hunger monster is stirring anyway....

AriesWithBellsOn · 20/12/2011 15:35

A Nadolig llawen i chi, a blwyddyn newydd dda!

LinzerTinsel · 20/12/2011 15:47

Diolch yn fawr, Aries! Although have just realised it might be a little difficult for you to say hello to Wales for me if you live in Cornwall. Xmas Blush

Ah, so it's not just an Austrian thing to call them Negerküsse then, Gator. I'm going to try using Bumskopf at the next available opportunity and see what DH says. Xmas Grin

I don't really feel very ready for our trip, but can devote tomorrow morning to packing now that I have all the English lessons out of the way. At least all the presents have been bought and packed and I don't have to pack much in the way of clothes as we keep lots of spares at my parents'. Still need to pack an overnight bag for Munich though, plus get all the documents ready and check in tomorrow so that we have a choice of seats. It will be such a luxury to have allocated seats for once!

5moreminutes · 20/12/2011 16:24

Wow the thread has been whizzing along today!

Canella Shortbread is the easiest thing in the world to make, dd can practically do it on her own, (though it was me making it today) there are only 4 ingredients :) I had to make more as I sent what I made this morning to dd's football training party this afternoon when I suddenly panicked that I didn't know whether I was meant to contribute food!

Nope Ds2's sleeping continues to be rubbish - last night was a "good" night by currant standards, I got one block of 3 hours and a couple of 1 hour sleeps, and was up about 5.30. More often he is waking hourly and impossible to re-settle after 4.30am at the moment, so I give up and come downstairs sometime around 5am a lot of days, trying hard not to let the older 2 realise and bounce down after me before the house rules earliest allowable time of 5.45am.

Your MIL sounds a right dragon, well done for standing up to her! In what way is it her place to act like that? GGGRRR on your and dd's behalf!

Canella and Linzer dd didn't turn 6 until she'd been at school for a week - her birthday is 19th Sept, and the cut off here is 30th Sept. Loads of parents chose to keep there kids back though, so there are children up to 18 months older than her in her class! It seems parents can make the decision to keep back pretty much, from the advice I was given, but KiGa said they couldn't tell me what to do but felt she would be incredibly bored at KiGa another year, and that was the advice from the Kinderartz and the tester who came to KiGa (whatever the proper name for that job is). However DS1 is also a late September birthday and I am less sure about him being so young for his year - he is physically big, almost as tall as dd and the same weight and shoe size, and he has just learnt to write his name pretty much all by himself, but he is not very mature and is a "typical boy" in terms of not liking to sit still and being prone to wildness! We will have to decide whether he goes into the Vorschule group next year or not, I am thinking not (there is an aspect of keeping him away from a friend I think is not good for him and with nicer friends to this thinking too, which may or may not be bad!).

Our English TV is via satalite and a freeview box, to the regular TV, kids watch mainly cbeebies rather than German kids TV - I say it's good for their English and dual cultural identity Xmas Grin

Admysteltoe we live in a tiny Bavarian village where at least 80% of people seem to have been born here and live in a 2 family house with, or next door to, one set of grandparents, but I am very open about the fact don't go to any kind of church (though I have not actually said I am a non believer), and I don't feel ostracised at all and the kids have no problem at all with friends to play with - we live right next to the playground and kids come out when they see my kids (or any kids, just somebody to play with) they certainly don't pack up and leave! DD is a social butterfly and gets more phone calls than DH and I put together and has a friend here or is at a friend's pretty much daily, and DS has friends too though not to the same ott extent! What a horrible village you must have lived in! One of my neighbours grew up in a town 20km away and appeals to my fellow feeling as a fellow outsider though, which does make me laugh - I think people are friendly to me because I am an oddity and they are nosey though, I am the only foreigner in the village and there is no racial diversity at all, in fact it is something I think I possibly need to make sure the kids are open minded about as they don't come across many non white people at all.#

ladder thanks for the warning about the drive to the ferry - dh is good on route planning and the ferry is 9.30pm and we will set off early morning, as with a 1, 4 and 6 ear old (as they will be then) we will need lots of breaks!

5moreminutes · 20/12/2011 16:27

sorry wrote there instead of their - blame 7 month old bouncing on my knee, having been removed from pulling out cables for the nth time... he is so fast and already such a monkey!
