DH who gets these things has had a tsunami alert for Japan. Does anyone have any more info? Itsjust breaking news about the massive earthquake at the moment.

8.8 off the coast. 6 M tsunami warning

febes · 11/03/2011 06:56

I'm in Christchurch and we are still getting lots of after shocks (25 in the past 24 hours). What is the world coming to???

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/03/2011 07:07

6M is high. I can imagine Tokyo bay will be suffering badly. The airport is closed I imagine.

Febes - are you ok? It is terrible. Scary big time.

In Tokyo they have earthquakes every day but just little ones. When We were there two years ago there was one, we were on the train in Tokyo station and didn't feel it but their pics fell off their wall!

A lot of that part of Japan is v low lying.

Is anyone in central Tokyo?

barleywood · 11/03/2011 07:12

6m is very high. Hope those in Japan are safe

Febes, the after shocks must be awful and prolong the anxiety

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/03/2011 07:12

My bro lives there in central Tokyo and conveniently isn't answering his phone!

OP posts:
audi4prez · 11/03/2011 07:22

@ratherBeOnThePiste
I live in Osaka and we only felt minor shaking, but the news is saying that cell service is down for much of northern Japan and people are lining up to use landlines that are available. So he probably can't answer:( I have friends in Tokyo I'm crazy with worry for...but the worst damage/flooding seems to be further north in Sendai/miyagi. Tsunami warnings have been issued for most of Japan.

sakura · 11/03/2011 07:25

OMG, really. I've been out and about all day. I'm going to turn the news on now. I'm in the south so okay. HOpe everyone is allright up there in Tokyo

sakura · 11/03/2011 07:29

OMFG I just watched that BBC link.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/03/2011 07:32

Just spoken to SIL they live in central Tokyo. She went to get their twins from nursery school and they had to wait for a bit to leave because of the shaking Sad they are home now and are fine but my bro is filling up buckets etc as they are sure all things will be cut off. Such a worry.

OP posts:
sakura · 11/03/2011 07:33

Rather it hasn't hit central TOkyo apparently, just the Northen coastal area AFAIK

sakura · 11/03/2011 07:34

I mean the Tsunami, not sure what's happening with the quake

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/03/2011 07:45

Sakura - whereabouts are you? My bro used to live in Kagoshima.

At the mo all we are getting is the same BBC link on the news.

OP posts:
sakura · 11/03/2011 07:47

In Kyushu, but I try to be a bit mysterious about where.
I asked DH if our friends in Tokyo are allright, but he seems certain that the people in central Tokyo are okay. It looks as though there will be a death toll in the North though.

sakura · 11/03/2011 07:48

OMFG how weird was it to hear about this first on MN!!

caramelwaffle · 11/03/2011 07:53

The pictures on Sky news are so graphic. I hope all MNetters in Japan are ok x

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/03/2011 07:56

It is mad Sakura! But I am so glad of it Smile

DH (who has these things) got the tsunami alert on his mobile, then we tried calling my bro and got nowhere, tried facebooking and got nothing, tried Mumsnet and got good responses from lovely people living in Japan. The power of mumsnet!

My SIL says where they are is fine but they are worried now about the water being cut off, powercuts etc. I wish they were here in London!

BBC are saying 8.9 magnitude Sad they are also saying that because Tokyo is in the bay it is quite sheltered from a tsunami but also not too badly affected earthquake wise. That of course does not help the poor families in the north.

Been watching it live on TV. The wave moving across the farmland engulfing the greenhouses was pretty terrifying. The farmland will be useless for years. Large fires burning in various places and people trapped under rubble. Electric system shut down.

This is very bad. Japanese stockmarket down a lot.

BalloonSlayer · 11/03/2011 08:20

Oh God how awful Sad

sakura · 11/03/2011 08:23

They're starting to report the death toll Sad. Only three but lots of people missing
It's pretty bad because an oil refinery has blown up near Tokyo, not in Tokyo, but near it.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 11/03/2011 08:26

How awful :(

That oil refinery fire looked terrifying!! On the plus side the Japanese are really well equipped in dealing with Earthquakes as they are in the most seismically active region in the world - but this is a biggy! Hopefully the death toll will be low.

Can't help feeling for the people of Christchurch, they must be thinking whatever next???

wrinklyraisin · 11/03/2011 08:33

My boss flew out of Tokyo the day before yesterday. Thank god. It looks awful.

sakura · 11/03/2011 08:34

I'm reeeeeally worried about what they're saying about the nuclear plants. They have "no information on leakage" and I am worried about this

BeenBeta · 11/03/2011 08:43

They are saying on TV here in the UK that the Japanee nuclear facilities had a special earthquake shutdown procedure put in place 12 years ago to make them safer.
