We are starting to look at pre-schools and schoold for dd and obviously want to go together to meet teachers etc.
Just wondered if anyone has any positive/negative or hopefully neutral experiences with teachers with regard to same sex parents?

I guess I am most concerned about dd being bullied and want to know how the school would handle it.

I am not gay but do know several sets of gay parents, and some single gay parents. IME little children are totally accepting of gay relationships so your LO won't be bullied at a young age, unless you are very unfortunate and have children with bigoted parents in the class.

Am sure the vast majority of teachers wouldn't bat an eyelid.

ggg-really made me smile!

I am convinced that the kids are not the problem at allbut their parents and their bigoted (or otherwise) opinions can make all the difference.......

Do schools still teach Christian ethics? If so, there could be problems when they are taught that God meant for a man and woman to be together.

My mum is gay (came out when I was about 5, however I lived with my gran so it never was an issue whilst at school for me). However, my brother was born and raised with my mum and her then partner. They were always very open with the school about being gay, and in talking to mum and brother they never had any negative response from the teachers or other school staff (and this is a very small town school in the early 90s, in remote Devon!).

However, there were some mutterings amongst the parents, which naturally dripped down to the children, so my brother had to put up with some name calling and mickey taking whilst at junior school. To their credit the school jumped right on it in a really empathetic and tactful way. And my brother shrugged it off - to him there was nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

In senior school my brother never encountered any problems, and he has grown up to be proud and happy with his two mums!

I think just visit the schools and ensure they have an open and happy ethos, I am sure that in this day and age you should get a lot of support. If not, the school is not good enough for your dc!

theresmoretolifethanmotherhood, I was raised in Catholic schools all through my education and the question of the rights or wrongs of homosexuality never came up at all. The nuns didn't talk about that kind of thing. Sex inside or outside of marriage didn't come up till secondary school when we were all told we should save ourselves for marriage. And we all ignored that!

theresmoretolifethanmotherhood · 12/10/2007 17:53

I was taught at school that homosexuality was wrong.

I would be up in arms if anyone tried to teach my child that.

It was a long time ago!
I wouldn't be up in arms if my child was taught that, but I'd be surprised.

Im a teacher and Im gay. My partner and i would love a family. I have concerns about so many things but where do you draw the line and just think we'll deal with that when it happens?!?

busymum1 · 21/08/2008 09:16

in dd1's school have been brilliant sallyanna a teacher at dd1's school is gay and recently a parent found out and tried to make a big problem she told me in very loud opinionated voice it was unnatural etc spoke to headteacher as felt she needed to be aware of this parent as she was very rude etc and was trying to cause problems headteacher asked if i was upset etc by this womans views but this parent had spoken to me for 18mths at school gates but did not realise I was gay we don't tend to wear badges luminous slogans etc although most parents at school are aware as dd1 aged 6 is very open about it. The support from teaching staff, classroom assistants and nearly every other parent in the school was overwhelming

Busymum1-

Thanks for your reply. It's good to know most people are supportive.
