So gutted. Just noticed a diamond missing from my engagement ring. Does anyone know about rights in relation to jewellery.

I got engaged 7 years ago. I love my engagement ring. It cost about £500. This is the second time a stone has fallen out. I got it replaced last time at a different jewellers as we have moved- it cost a lot to get it fixed and the jeweller was surprised it had happened within such a short space of time.

This time would it be worth taking it back to the original shop and complaining?

We can't afford to have it repaired again.

Is it not covered under your household insurance?

FabIsGettingFit · 27/06/2010 19:12

Insurance?

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:13

We are renting - don't have household insurance. Our landlords have it.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 27/06/2010 19:15

No, your landlords have buildings incurance, you are supposto get contents insurance for your things. Have you not got this?

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 19:17

you shouldn't have to claim on household insurance for faulty goods though
i would complain, yes

ivykaty44 · 27/06/2010 19:21

I would think 7 years is a bit long to take it back to the original jewlery shop - but in any case you have had it repaired once and therefore I think this menas that it is invalid for a replacment.

I think they would also say that general wear and tear and washing up bathing etc would have made the stone loose

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:21

Would you consider it to be defective - surely a diamond ring should last longer than 7 years?

I do wear it every day though.

OP posts:
suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:23

Meant to add it is not just the stone has come loose - a part of the setting has broken away, same as last time.

OP posts:
trilliAnasTra · 27/06/2010 19:31

If you considered it defective you should have complained to the manufacturer the first time it fell out.

This time the falling-out is presumably the fault of the person who repaired it.

And you really should get contents insurance...

ivykaty44 · 27/06/2010 19:36

But you had the ring repaired so you are now not able to go back to the original shop and say anything - as they will say you agreed to have it repaired - regardless that they didn't do it or not..

Do you have the receit for the work you had doen last time? As that would be my move to go back to that shop armed with the receit and say that the work they did has gone wrong. You did keep the receit for the work they did didn't you?

lal123 · 27/06/2010 19:36

I lost a stone from my engagement ring a few years ago - it was probably about 10 years old? With wearing every day the setting wears and the stones can become loose - normal I'm afraid.

Agree that you should get contents insurance (though I didn't claim on mine)

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:36

Well the first time I thought maybe I could have damaged it without knowing it. We have moved to a different town so I just dropped it into a local jewellers to have it repaired.

This time it is definitely a different part of the ring so it is not the part replaced the first time which is making me think there is something not right.

Has anyone else had an expensive ring start to fall apart after this length of time?

Maybe it is normal but none of my friends who have been married around the smae length or longer have ever mentioned this happening.

I will look into the contents insurance, thanks.

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:37

I have the original receipt and the one for the work done ivykaty

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 27/06/2010 19:41

Then take the ring back to the shop and show then with the receit detailsing the work - that the work hasn't lasted and ask them whay metals they have used in the clasp? I wonder if they used gold?

Perhaps take it somewhere else first for an opinion...

ivykaty44 · 27/06/2010 19:42

sorry -diddn't read it wasn't the same part.
Telephone trading standards and see what they say - tell them you have had it repaired once but now a different part has fallen in and let go of the diamond

NeatFreak · 27/06/2010 19:44

I dont know if all jewellers are the same but when dh bought me a diamond eternity ring afew years ago we got a ten year guarantee- if any stones fall out or it breaks they will repair or replace it. They also offer to clean it every year. I thought this was standard so it might be worth asking...

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:44

Thanks everyone.

I am just so disappointed.

We really can't afford to have it done again if it costs as much as the first time.

My wedding ring was made to fit around the engagement one so I can't wear it on it's own (it look like there's a bit missing)

I don't own any other proper jeweller at all so just didn't realise this could happen so so soon.

My mother still has her ring after 40 years and never had it repaired.

OP posts:
traceybath · 27/06/2010 19:45

Do you get it cleaned regularly?

Dust/dirt can get underneath the diamonds and cause them to come loose.

LittleWhiteWolf · 27/06/2010 19:48

My engagement ring was my great-grandmothers who got married in 1930. No, I think there's something not quite right with your ring--it shouldn't be so easily breakable!
I would speak to the jewellers who repaired it last to get some advice, you said they were surprised last time?

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 19:48

I had it cleaned last year when it was repaired.

I had it done twice before that - so 3 times in 7 years - probably not enough

OP posts:
Olihan · 27/06/2010 19:51

I have my engagement ring which I've had for 12 years and my eternity ring which is vintage, c.1940's and have never had either cleaned but the stones are all firmly in place despite being worn every day. My engagement ring cost considerably less than yours too.

The setting of yours is clearly faulty though, for it to happen twice in 7 years - what sort of setting is it?

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 20:02

I am hopeless with jewellery so find it hard to describe.

Firstly it is quite small - not a big sparkler. It is 6 little stones set around a middle one of the same size so sort of in the shape of a flower IYKWIM

It was the flower shape that attracted me to it cos I always doodle a little flower.

Things have been a bit tough between me and DH lately but I look at my 2 little rings and remember the wedding day and our vows and it sort of lifts me a bit - if it keeps going like this I'll have none of the original ring left in a few years

OP posts:
iMum · 27/06/2010 20:08

This has happened to me-again my wedding ring is made to fit around my engagement ring-Ive lost 2 stones from my wedding and the big diamond from my engagement on 4 occasions-both bought from the same place, the clasp has crumbled each time-I took them back to the shop, had them repaired each time but have now given up, I dont wear them anymore and will oneday save enought to have them re moddled or just buy new ones.
Again, these were expensive rngs...

suiledonne · 27/06/2010 20:12

iMum Sorry to hear about your rings.

Did you have to pay for the repairs each time?

Did the shop admit there was a problem or just normal wear and tear?

I am annoyed with myself now for going to a different jeweller for the repair but I had a 6 month old baby and a 3 year old at the time and couldn't face a couple of hours in the car each way to go back to the original shop.

I have probably messed up my chances of getting something done now.

I wouldn't want it replaced anyway for sentimental reasons but it would be nice not to have to pay full price for the repair.

OP posts:
iMum · 27/06/2010 20:15

Well they repaired fro free until the last time when they said I had to pay-they said it was just wear and tear but I disagree-the mount and clasp bits around the stones are so flimsy a simply knock looks enough to break them.

I did buy an emergency"stand in" ring from the same jewllers but had issues with that too!

I know its not me tho as I have some of my mums rings that are very old and they are fine!

I am deffo saving up for just a simple band ring to wear....
