So gutted. Just noticed a diamond missing from my engagement ring. Does anyone know about rights in relation to jewellery.

I got engaged 7 years ago. I love my engagement ring. It cost about £500. This is the second time a stone has fallen out. I got it replaced last time at a different jewellers as we have moved- it cost a lot to get it fixed and the jeweller was surprised it had happened within such a short space of time.

This time would it be worth taking it back to the original shop and complaining?

We can't afford to have it repaired again.

I don't think you have a chance on this. If there was a guarantee, it must have been rendered invalid by having someone else work on the ring. It is, unfortunately, not a expensive ring (having said that, I'm convinced mine was cheaper than that!). So I doubt you stand a good chance to get something out of the complaint after all this time.

Do you still have the diamond? if it has got lost, perhaps my only suggestion would be get it replaced with a von graff or a cheaper stone. Nobody will notice, and you already know that diamond is not the one anyway.

Some designs of ring are stronger, and better for everyday wear than others. For example, a ring with claw-set stones (little prongs of metal that hold onto the stones) are not particularly strong unless there are a lot of claws. Other ways to set a stone, where it is "sunk" into a thick band of metal for example and does not stick up above the metal, are stronger and not as subject to knocks from washing up and so on.

My Mother wears a a ring with a very large stone every day. This is ring is insured as a seperate item on my parents home contents policy.

The insurance company insist on it being checked by a jeweller every single year and a certificate issued by the jeweller that nothing is loose or broken. If this is not done then the insurance is not valid.

In other words, jewellery wears out when worn. I think you need to have your ring reset into a design (can still be a pretty flower shape) that is suitable for heavy wear.

Maybe you can pay for it by selling old broken gold/silver items to the jewller to pay for it.
