Cowboy builder threatening to sue me for being honest about his shoddy work

JessLou80 · 17/11/2025 15:01

Hi, I wonder if anyone could help or advise - The builder that did work on our bathroom and kitchen wrecked our house!!! He broke our bath, broke our shower tray, cut the shower doors too high and didn’t seal the shower causing the shower to leak everywhere. He levelled the bathroom floor completely wrong and uneven and cut the bath panel wrongly. The tiles we bought were very expensive and he wrecked about 60% of them by cutting them with the wrong equipment. The electric work he did for us was so shoddy and dangerous - The list is endless. Breaking the bath was the last straw (goodness knows how he did it!) but we said we wasn’t happy with his work and he picked up his tools and just left with the job unfinished. He then emailed us an invoice and we said we would only pay for the actual work he did minus breakages. We agreed upon a figure and paid him upon advice from citizens advice.
We have had numerous huge leaks from the bathroom since he did the work and these leaks have been because of the work he did - the latest leak was a few weeks ago and because of this latest leak we now have to have our bathroom and kitchen and also the kitchen ceiling completely re-done (again!) and will cost us thousands of pounds.
A few days ago on social media on a local group there was somebody asking for recommendations for a bathroom fitter. His family member recommended his company and gave a glowing reference (??!!) I commented saying that I absolutely could not recommend this company because they wrecked my house and cost us thousands in repairs. A few hours later the builder guy messaged in a very threatening manner saying that what I said was slander and if I didn’t remove my comments he would speak to a solicitor to sue me. I probably shouldn’t have done but I messaged back saying that what I commented was not slander as it was all completely true and I asked him not to threaten me. He said it was slander as the company that did my work no longer exists as he closed it down and the new company (that his sister recommended on social media) was a different company with a different name and company house - (the new company has a very, very slightly different name) It is basically the same company with him as the sole worker but he closed down the first company I think because of the many bad reviews left on the website (none of which was me)
Anyway….if you are still reading (and thank you for your patience!) My question is - Is this true what he said? Is this slander? And can I get into trouble because of it? I wouldn’t have said anything negative (although true!) if I knew he was now under a different company name but the change in company name was so slight I didn’t notice - it was still him that did our work regardless of the change of name of the company and he was still responsible for thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Firstly its not slander but libel. Slander is he spoken word and libel is the written word. Your review was written.

Taking someone to court for libel is extremely expensive. You have to be able to prove😣
#1 that the claims are untrue
#2 that they were done for malicious reasons
#3 that you have lost business or reputation as a result.

Assuming you have photos, invoices and other documents to prove the shoddy workmanship and the costs you have incurred to call in another company to remedy the faults then you can prove your claim.

You can argue that you posted your review in the public interest to warn others and not out of malice. Especially as there was some deciet involved in the man being recommended by a family member posing as though she was a satisfied customer.

It would be very difficult for the tradesman to prove that he had lost business or reputation, particularly as he has now closed down that company.

I would go ahead and repost the review on every revue website, including the fact that he had threatened and bullied you. Then block off all communication.

You probably have grounds to go to the small claims court to sue him as an individual for the cost of the damage but his craftily changing the company name might make that difficult. But then I am a vengeful bitch.

Edited

Thank you for the great advice it is very helpful - I have loads of photos and emails to prove his shoddy work. And yes my comments were in a place of concern for anybody else who may encounter him and not malice

I would amend my message to say
" Mr Pipes has been in contact to let me know that this is a brand new company. QMy review refers to Better Bathrooms (in which Mr Pipes was the only plumber) not the brand new company Best Bathrooms (in which Mr Pipes is also the only plumber). Hopefully the new name has improved his skills."

Perfect!! Thank you

As others have said, it's expensive to sue for libel and given that two of the main defences are 1- being able to prove it's true and 2- public interest he hasn't got a leg to stand on.

I would update to ensure it's clear about the two business names and not even reply to him.

He won't sue.

Thank you - I did think this would be the case initially but then I got myself into a panic over it. I agree about it being expensive to sue and I don’t think he could afford to

Honestly? I’d walk away and remove my review. The time for taking him on was when you were unhappy with his work. Do you really need the aggro?

No.

why would you just suck this sort of expensive shit up? He did a really bad job and cost the OP money.

This dickhead isn’t going to sue you. I agree with previous posters who have said about amending the review to explain about the phoenix company.

Yeah I agree - this guy cost us thousands to replace the horrendous work he did on our house - and it is still costing us now. I’m so angry and I really don’t think people like this should get away with it - it really isn’t fair

You have 3 years from the date of completion in which to issue proceedings. I'd sue him - small claims track, it's Immensely satisfying 😎

AnneElliott · 17/11/2025 22:37

I would consider going down the small claims route - albeit if it’s the Ltd company you contracted with, it doesn’t have any assets most likely. However, it might help with getting him to back off.

I have to say I hate bullies so I’d be posting the review in even more places and helpfully adding that he’s threatened you after you posted it.

To be honest I’m absolutely the same and really hate bullies - the thought had crossed my mind once he started threatening me that I should just let the whole world know starting with more reviews but I’m also very worried about getting myself into trouble

He won’t sue. It’s utter blustery bollocks. Only the super rich or corporates sue for that. And even in the remote chance he did it’s true anyway so he can sod off. .

I think that is my new favourite phrase - “utter blustery bollocks”!! Love it! And thank you that does make sense 🙂

Trading Standards?

he could end up with a criminal record

Lostuser · 18/11/2025 17:24

You might want to check if he is registered with The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors

And ……..

IBorAlevels · 18/11/2025 17:36

Good luck OP. I had a similar instance with a carpenter who I found on CheckATrade. I told them how he had turned up drunk, ruined the room he was meant to be upgrading - cut wood inches off, ruined doors, took 2 months longer than expected and had actually left all of his tools at my house in the room for the entire time he went off on a bender because someone in his family wasn't well, (for 2 months) then turned up drunk demanding it all back at 10pm one random night when I asked when he was coming to finish the job. They apologised and closed his account and then I had about 1 month of daily harassing messages sending me pictures of his sick family member, telling me what a bitch I was, how he was going to top himself because I had "ruined his business"...it was an absolute nightmare. I really should have gone to the police and regret not doing that now, but at the time feared being held accountable if he did hurt himself. People forget how much you open your homes and lives up to strangers when you let them do work for you.

Shadesofscarlett · 18/11/2025 17:51

As an aside can you not pursue him for money cos you not only paid him for rubbish work, he has also cost you a fortune to make good.

WeNeedToTalkAboutIT · 18/11/2025 18:51

Notoriously difficult to sue for libel.

Stick to your guns. Name him personally. Leave the post(s) up as people do search.

Renaming his company is one of the oldest tricks in the book, as is threatening people who are truthful. What a right seasoned wanker.

But we have paid him thousands of pounds for a job that has not been up to scratch - surely that in a way is stealing? Taking money off people and conning them? He is an absolute cowboy -people get criminal records for a lot less
