Can a teacher date a parent?

Can a teacher or TA be dismissed for dating a parent of a student (student not in the teachers classes)?

I think in some circumstances (e.g. if the parent is really attractive) it is allowed.

HA

BigSilly · 28/02/2025 15:30

They are both consenting adults. Why would they not be allowed to date?

pinkyredrose · 28/02/2025 15:32

Of course! They're not in a position of authority over the parent.

Fuuuuuckit · 28/02/2025 15:32

Of course

There would need to be openness with the SLT and ensure that kids not taught by that teacher. It would be in the teacher's best interest not to be involved with any discipline or awards of child.

(Pre-existing relationship with a parent when I started working at a school, all SLT aware)

InigoJollifant · 28/02/2025 15:34

I was surprised when Bridget Jones got together with her son’s teacher after a Christmas concert, then had him in the house by New Years Eve.

sumsitupreally · 28/02/2025 15:34

Two consenting adults are allowed to date eachother

Moonlightfrog · 28/02/2025 15:39

Thank you. Really don’t want to out myself…I am the parent, teacher is refusing to disclose our relationship as apparently they will lose their job.

Said person does not teach my child but does have some involvement (very rarely).

There might be a code of conduct within their contract, likewise relationships between teachers/staff may need to be declared . Be careful of becoming a topic of gossip though,

theboffinsarecoming · 28/02/2025 15:42

How old is your dc?

Moonlightfrog · 28/02/2025 15:44

I really don’t want to say in fear of outing myself and protecting my DC.

I don’t see how your child’s age is remotely outing.
I hope he’s not a teenage boy.

Ionacat · 28/02/2025 15:47

It depends on how you got together. If the only way you knew each other is through teacher/parent relationship, then I could see it you may have broken their staff code of conduct. If you’ve met outside of school e.g. both go to the same gym etc. then it shouldn’t be a problem, but it will depend on their code of conduct to what might they may need to declare.

I think I know who this person is based on the clues given....

  1. They have a child
  2. The child goes to school
  3. They are in a secret relationship with a teacher.

Well if it's all right for Bridget Jones it's all right for you

Ohapal · 28/02/2025 15:50

The school may have its own regulations/procedures for this, regardless of the law - which doesn't mind.

I have no contact with them at school, my child travels to school without me…..so it’s not like I’m stood in the playground. We knew each other before my child started there.

I think that was a year later not a few days later

Chunkilumptious · 28/02/2025 15:54

They'd be better off disclosing it to the SLT just for transparency. This doesn't have to involve banners or the school orchestra. A word with line manager should do it. There shouldn't be an issue at all but it's best to be open about such things.

They are refusing to disclose…so I have ended things 😬. He is saying if he discloses he will lose his job and be struck off. I just wanted someone to conform that this wouldn’t be the case, not as though it’s likely to make a difference now.

He wouldn't be "struck off" ,unless there was vulnerability, grooming or criminal activity involved, but could lose his job. Having said that he crossed that line by starting the relationship.

This. He should have looked into it before starting something. There’s no criminal activity or grooming.
