Bread in open bags?

DijonMustard · 14/12/2024 09:31

Is there a health & safety issue about the sticky tape around the necks of bread bags coming unstuck, so that the loaves are unsealed on the shelf in the shop?

OP posts:
LittleBearPad · 14/12/2024 09:33

No

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 14/12/2024 09:34

I doubt it as lots of bread is sold unwrapped on open shelves. Why do you think there is?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/12/2024 09:42

I've never experienced this - I sometimes have trouble getting the stuff off!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 14/12/2024 09:45

Why?
If you buy bread from a bakery it's sitting on a shelf unwrapped.

TheGriffle · 14/12/2024 09:47

No, surely you just don’t buy an open one if it bothers you? How do you feel about baguettes that are in plastic bags with an open top? Or god forbid the bread that is sold with no packaging on the shelf?!

TotallyTwisted · 14/12/2024 09:47

I love that this has been posted in legal matters. 😂 It's bread.

Cardboardeaux · 14/12/2024 09:50

Well the Food Packaging (Safety Standards) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1997 do state that all bread needs to be soaked in bleach before packaging, and then encased in lead before being put on display for sale, but the rules are never enforced.

TianasBayou · 14/12/2024 09:58

Never experienced this. What brand is it? Contact the manufacturer or retailer.

calamariqueen · 14/12/2024 10:06

There is no safety issue OP. The bread will be fine, most store bought bagged bread is so full of chemicals and additives that anything from the natural environment should be far less concerning for you.

Soontobe60 · 14/12/2024 10:11

Someone’s looking to sue for stale bread 😂

This! They're an absolute pain. And then when you finally manage to get it undone half the bloody wrapping rips with it!

BraveBlueDuck · 14/12/2024 10:49

No it's not an issue

RosieLeaf · 14/12/2024 10:51

No. Why do you ask? Is this posted in legal by mistake?

Ilovemyshed · 14/12/2024 11:01

Hold on, let's ask the local bakery WHO SELLS UNWRAPPED BREAD ON OPEN SHELVING.

DijonMustard · 14/12/2024 11:31

Thanks, all.

It's posted in Legal because I couldn't fine a H&S place, and breaches of H&S regulations have legal consequences.

Good to hear that you all feel it's fine, though.

I don’t think we just feel it’s fine - I think it is fine.

As others point out, bread is merchandised in a number of different ways. Some with no packaging, some with open packaging and some with sealed packaging.

Don’t walk down the bakery aisle - you’ll be horrified!

You were going to report it Confused

MN really doesn’t need a H&S board

Sunshineandrainbow · 14/12/2024 11:37

M and s has unwrapped bread at the bakery. Can't see an issue

Sncl · 14/12/2024 11:39

Loads of bread is sold open no wrappers in bakeries up and down the country. If there’s a one that’s come unstuck from their tape, just buy a different bread if it bothers you that much.

ginasevern · 14/12/2024 12:10

OP, you cannot be serious?

Why on earth has this bothered you so much? Do you never go into the bread section of Lidl and see the bread sitting out unwrapped?

ChickenNuggetFromSpencies · 14/12/2024 14:36

Ut wouldn't ve H&S even if it was a problem, but Food hygiene.

No Daily mail sad face for you unfortunately

This, or hand it to a member of staff to take off the shelf if you feel it'll have gone stale.

AlphabetBird · 14/12/2024 14:40

Are you trying to get compo from Lidl for letting some air reach the bread?

I’ve just woken up after a night shift. Had to pinch myself that this thread wasn’t a bizarre dream!
