DS (17) arrested last night for stupidly recording videos in an abandoned building!

DS (17) and a few of his friends were arrested for burglary last night due to stupidly being where they shouldn’t, an abandoned building, recording stuff for Tik Tok!

I thought he was staying at his friends house, he’s stayed over before without any incident, so I went to bed around 11pm. I woke at 5am with two missed calls at 3am! It was the police stating he’d been arrested. I couldn’t call the number back and having never been in this situation before I didn’t know how to get in touch with the police at that station. Luckily I managed to get hold of DS who said he was been driven home in a police car.

Officer who dropped him off explained that DS had been de-arrested with no charge. Said DS was extremely co-operative, nothing else found on the lads, just a really stupid thing to do!

Obviously I’m livid and extremely upset/embarrassed with DS, not only for wasting police valuable resources but by being somewhere he shouldn’t be, plus it could have been really dangerous!

As he’s been arrested will he now have a police record? Could someone please tell me how to check.

Your best bet is to call 101 if you want to check anything, but if he’d been arrested he would have been given paperwork when he left.

I might do that. We do have a neighbour who is a police Sergeant, but in another area. Wonder if she could advise 🤔 I’ll be mortified at bringing it up though! 🥴

Dd the officer who brought him home give you a business card type thing - if so contact them with that

No, we get given anything, just DS.

He can contact his local police station and ask what information they hold on him.

But you really need to calm down. Don’t know how many times you need to be told that he has been de-arrested so it’s like it never happened. Nothing is ever going to show up on any police check. It’s a non-event.

I hope you’re not fretting about this in front of him. Let him put it behind him now.

Craftycorvid · 09/06/2024 13:29

Try not to be too hard on him. Sounds like he is so honest, it never even occurred to him it might look suspicious.

OriginalUsername2 · 09/06/2024 13:29

I think a bit of fretting in front of him is deserved. Being called by the police re:your child is bloody scary I imagine. He should have a bit of negativity to prevent him thinking it was all fun and games that he got away with.

Of course I’m not fretting in front of him and although there have been responses stating that it won’t show up on a police check, there are others stating it might! It might seem like a non-event to you but it’s been a shitty weekend for us!

Just to be clear it won’t show up on a dbs check. However if he wants to be able to answer the question honestly about having ever been arrested for visa applications this is the only thing I’d be trying to clarify. As stated even if he had a record of arrest many people don’t admit these things and it’s not picked up.

Arrests without charge that have been processed and gone into the system can show up on an enhanced DBS check, but only if it is relevant to whatever the DBS check is for, which seems highly unlikely in this case. The UK do not share police records with other Countries’ authorities as a matter of course so things like the US visa waiver won’t catch him out unless he’s somehow become a matter of international police or security interest (and then an arrest without charge for something that he probably shouldn’t have been arrested for is not going to be the issue!).

I would talk to your sergeant friend. Don’t be embarrassed. She will have seen lots of nice kids in that sort of situation. If she can’t find out for you, she can explain how your force arranges things and who to talk to to find out what you need to know. Don’t expect her to search databases for you because doing that for friends and family could get her in trouble. But she will know who to talk to and may ask them for you.

He’s over 16, they won’t tell a parent anything

I love urbex websites. I only wish I was brave and fit enough to do some exploring. I hope he got some good footage to make it worthwhile!

Bjorkdidit · 09/06/2024 18:48

Hopefully the police have frightened him off. These buildings can be in poor condition - rotten floors, missing staircases etc, so really dangerous especially if they have an accident and no-one knows they're there.

A boy died doing this in one of these buildings near me.

Hope you and your son are OK OP. My niece was arrested and de arrested as a young teen. Nothing has ever shown up when she has applied for jobs (DBS checks) or travelled. She is a successful young woman now with her own home and a good career. I didn’t realise that most of my childhood had been spent ‘urbexing’. It was mainly bombed out buildings so that’s showing my age😂.

I’ve no doubt there will be footage somewhere but he hasn’t brought this up yet! 🤭

Thank you! Glad your niece is doing well! 😃 good to know nothing has shown up on DBS checks!

Who would have thought there was a fancy name for checking out derelict buildings! 🤣

I broke into a disused/closed garden centre as a teenager, just to walk around (drunk!)
Neighbouring house residents caught us and we ran!
I never repeated anything like that!
Teens do stupid things. Hopefully he will have learnt his lesson.

From a different perspective I can see the attraction in old abandoned buildings I think they're interesting & always want to go in myself to have a nose!

ageratum1 · 11/06/2024 08:44

Unless he broke his way in,he hasn't really done anything wrong, except trespass which is not a crime usually

DS has always had a fascination for abandoned buildings, just never thought he’d be arrested for it! Steer clear 🤣
