DS (17) arrested last night for stupidly recording videos in an abandoned building!

DS (17) and a few of his friends were arrested for burglary last night due to stupidly being where they shouldn’t, an abandoned building, recording stuff for Tik Tok!

I thought he was staying at his friends house, he’s stayed over before without any incident, so I went to bed around 11pm. I woke at 5am with two missed calls at 3am! It was the police stating he’d been arrested. I couldn’t call the number back and having never been in this situation before I didn’t know how to get in touch with the police at that station. Luckily I managed to get hold of DS who said he was been driven home in a police car.

Officer who dropped him off explained that DS had been de-arrested with no charge. Said DS was extremely co-operative, nothing else found on the lads, just a really stupid thing to do!

Obviously I’m livid and extremely upset/embarrassed with DS, not only for wasting police valuable resources but by being somewhere he shouldn’t be, plus it could have been really dangerous!

As he’s been arrested will he now have a police record? Could someone please tell me how to check.

It’s fine. My DS was arrested for the same, and a couple of other acts of stupidity. Never charged though. He has some additional needs and the police know that and gave him a bollocking.
I realise that doesn’t look good on me, but it’s hard to predict what lunacy our late teens will get into their heads.
He’s grown up a bit now and had an enhanced DBS recently for a job. It came back clean.
I imagine the experience will have scared your DS a bit and hopefully taught him a lesson. Back it up with your own consequences/bollocking or whatever you feel necessary but don’t worry about long term consequences.

Badassnameforadojo · 08/06/2024 17:33

It literally doesn’t matter what the arrest was for if he was de-arrested. It’s done. Wiped clean. No record and he never needs to disclose it anywhere. No one will ever find out either.

SongbirdSienna · 08/06/2024 17:35

I don’t think I’ll ever forget listening to that message from the police, stating that DS had been arrested on suspicion of burglary! What a gut punch!

I actually think it’s a good thing, OP. And you maybe will come to that too. Not every teen needs a big kick up the ass, but the ones who do stuff like this might. Not saying your son would have kept doing dangerous things (coz we all did stupid shit and then grew up fine) but if he was considering it, this might be enough to knock those ideas out of this head. Frightening but with no lasting consequences - that’s the best kind of lesson he could get to sort himself out.

Thank you, I really hope this has put the fear of god into him, enough for him to not want to do this again, just have to try and trust that he won’t.

Respect to the police though 🙌

We also live in a small close, so he had to do the walk of shame from the police car to the house with a copper!
I’m hoping none of my neighbours were up 🥴🫣

Oh no! But he’s a teen, and you’ll see the funny side soon if he doesn’t get up to anything else. Don’t worry about the neighbours! Behind closed doors, every family has something. They’ll all have something.

Of all the things to be arrested for it’s probably one of the best.

Now I’ve calmed down a bit and the worry has subsided a little, I think you’re right!

Although it was such a shock first thing this morning (great way to make sure you're suddenly ALERT at 5am) I’m hoping DS has well and truly learned a valuable lesson!

But ultimately I do still want to make sure that there will no repercussions for DS. I really wish I’d asked the police officer!

I think you need to clarify if he was actually ‘de arrested’ or just released without being charged with anything. It sounds by the times you gave like he might have got as far as being booked in at a station?

There won’t be. He was de-arrested. It’s like it didn’t happen. He is absolutely fine and away scot-free! Don’t worry. He did a stupid thing, but it really isn’t even that bad. Don’t worry. Move on from it.

MissingMoominMamma · 08/06/2024 18:39

There won’t be any repercussions.

I’d rather my teens were doing something like that, than getting drunk, taking drugs, or annoying people with their noisy cars!

The police officer told me he’d been de-arrested.

"urbexing". Well, who knew! Latest name for something that teenage boys have been doing for years, don't worry about it op.

Apparently DS and his friends were all in a police van (😵‍💫) and taken one by one inside to give their details. We’re around 30 mins away from the area he was in and they couldn’t just let him go because of his age so he was driven home in a police taxi 🫣

Couldn’t just let him go with him being 17!

Taken inside where?

The reason I’m labouring it is my understanding is you normally only be de arrested before you reach a police station

https://www.libertyhumanrights.org.uk/advice_information/police-powers-of-arrest-2/

I hope it is the case that he was de arrested but it’s hard to fully trust the police - think I’d feel compelled to follow up.

i wouldn’t be hugely annoyed with DS or concerned it was a sign he was embarking on a criminal path so my primary concern would be making sure there was no possibility of any blight on his future.

Police powers of arrest - Liberty

What can you be arrested for? What makes an arrest "necessary"? Do the police always have to use handcuffs?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/06/2024 19:10

He won't have any record - clearly they haven't damaged anything or set the place on fire or attempted to squat, which is the real concern.

It is a common teenage hobby. Even when I was young we went into old buildings and scared ourselves silly, but now they film it for posterity 🙄

Inside the station to give their details individually (I think) so I presume us parents could be contacted.

SongbirdSienna · 08/06/2024 19:18

I will ask DS where he was taken to, I had presumed a police station but need to clarify this!

OP posts:
SongbirdSienna · 08/06/2024 22:52

Yes DS was taken into the station but not put in a cell. They were all taken in individually and then back into the police van.

OP posts:
SongbirdSienna · 08/06/2024 22:52

Will this make a difference?

Sounds like possibly the officers took them to the police station, spoke with the custody sergeant and were told to de-arrest and get them home sharpish as they shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place.

Sounds like they were individually taken inside to give details and in DS’s case with him being 17 I presume they had to be given a parent’s telephone number. They were then taken back to the police van and not held in a cell.

I would still like to be able to check, how I do this I’m not sure, to see if there is anything on record against his name.
