Why is your husband giving you a hard time? What you did isn't OK but it's hardly the end of the world. And if he drives then I would stake my house on the fact he will have exceeded the speed limit at some point.

He just needs any reason to make me feel like crap sometimes ! Urgh!

Hi ladies xx

it didn’t give me a
option it’s jus asking if it was me I have gone online and told them that it was me today I can just hope for the best now and see what happens also it didn’t give me an option to put any extra information down

theres no option at the moment it jus says I need to say wetha it was me or not and then they’ll take it from there

I am so scared I’m literally crying 😢

Don't panic!

My husband has just had all this happen. The initial contact is them just wanting you to confirm that you were driving at the time (or tell them otherwise, if it wasn't you), there's nothing else you need to do at this point. You confirm you were driving, then you'll get a further letter setting out your options - it took about a week to ten days for the letter to arrive offering my husband the speed awareness course. It cost him £90, the whole matter was done and dusted within less than a month of the actual offence.

They make it sound terrifying - "notice of intended prosecution" and all the legal jargon - but it is nothing to worry about; as long as you've let them know it was you driving, you've done all that you need to right now.

I know how you feel. Happened to me

Main thing you can do is learn from it so you aren't in the same position again

Listen on the course, look at what settings you may have on your car to warn you of speeding or minimise it, use phone speed trackers, maybe buy a gadget

Overall, you shouldn't rely heavily on these things, they aren't infallible and it's still your responsibility, but they help

Use the course to up your overall awareness too

See it as a good thing that's taught you a lesson

AnnaMagnani · 02/06/2024 11:02

Almost every driver gets caught eventually.

I felt dreadful the first time, now I just see it as a hazard of driving. The 'be a better driver' courses are actually quite good.

I find it tends to teach me a lesson for a couple of years and then I get the next one...

If you mention it at work, you'll find everyone has done a course at least once.

Why are you scared and crying? The absolute worst case is 3 points and £100 fine. Seriously, don’t give it another thought until the next letter arrives and you’ll 99% likely be offered a course. There is nothing to be stressed about.

No they don't. Some drivers don't speed because they know from personal experience the devastation that it can cause.

DrFroggy · 02/06/2024 12:42

I very recently had this - 24 in a 20 zone on a main road. Until
they confirm it is you they won’t tell you the options. Once you write back and confirm it’s you then they will give you the options- in my case I was offered the online speed awareness course for £91 which I completed and as others have said, it was actually really interesting and good for thought. Because I did the course I didn’t get any points. Now I have to make sure I don’t get another one for the next three years because it will definitely be points then, but as others have said it’s likely to be 3 points so might affect your insurance but you won’t lose your license. Try not to worry too much, just send it back confirming it’s you and wait for the next step.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 02/06/2024 12:44

As a nee driver if you get 6 points for it they will revoke your license I'm afraid for 12 months New drivers are subject to different laws

LuckysDadsHat · 02/06/2024 12:47

foodtoorder · 02/06/2024 09:57

You will prob get three points and have to do speed awareness course.
Do not ignore the letter, just send back say it it was you. You'll then get the action that will be taken.
You won't be the first or last, just learn from it and move on.

You don't get points and the course. The course is to stop you getting 3 points.

If you get done again within 3 years you then have to take the points and won't have the option of a course.

It’s the first 2 years actually, but why are you trying to scare the poor woman? She won’t be getting 6 points for it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2024 12:53

My DH got caught doing 53 on a motorway in a bit that was down to 50 and got the speed awareness course

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2024 12:54

By the way- no judgement here but you know all motorways are maximum 70. Nowhere is 80

gamerchick · 02/06/2024 12:56

I 'think" you're allowed up to 6 points when you're still in your first 2 years after passing your test so you'll probably be alright. I'd probably pay more attention though, especially when you're still in your 2 years.

Your husband doesn't sound very nice.

Stop tying yourself in knots. You fucked up, own it and don't do it again. Stop crying about it and tell your husband to shut his cake hole.

mitogoshi · 02/06/2024 13:02

You just say yes or no at this point. You will then get a letter offering you to do a speed awareness course or get points - I highly recommend the course because it was genuinely helpful, i learned plenty despite being an experienced driver plus it was a bit of a laugh, really friendly people there and a non judgemental instructor

mitogoshi · 02/06/2024 13:03

Your husband is a separate issue but I would seriously consider your situation as regarding him if your flippant comment is real, I put up with that sort of thing and I realise I should not have

MonsteraMama · 02/06/2024 13:04

Stop panicking and crying, and tell your husband to stop being a twat. I'm sure he's not a perfect human who's never made a mistake.

I got caught doing 83 on a motorway very recently. I was driving my husband's car which is 10x more powerful than my little tin can so I just didn't notice how fast I was going, lost in my music and the nice weather etc. It happens. It's not good but it happens.

I got offered the course, you'll pay about £70-£90 for it, but it's better than points on your licence. Didn't impact my insurance either (I'm not 100% sure but I think only points do).

Please take some deep breaths, the absolute worst case scenario here is 3 points on your licence, which really truly isn't the end of the world.

This is the ratio the police will use to assess your eligibility for a course, if you've no other driving offences you're almost guaranteed to get one:

Any advice would be appreciated .. speeding ticket

  • theres no option at the moment it jus says I need to say wetha it was me or not and then they’ll take it from there

I am so scared I’m literally crying *

You'll be sent a letter which gives you the option of a speed awareness course or a £100 fine and 3 points.

You just book the speed awareness course, sit through the 3 hours (mine was over Zoom) and then that's it. Job done, drama over.

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/06/2024 13:21

Almost every driver gets caught eventually.

Indeed they do. Twice in a week for me and I'm allegedly an advanced driver and tutor.

Shit happens.

barbismyfriend · 02/06/2024 13:34

Why is no one saying 'hang on, new driver, little experience, speeding on a motorway, admits to being into the music, so basically not concentrating - be fucking grateful you got caught speeding and didn't actually kill anyone'

Was it a smart motorway? Would you have had time to change lanes without causing a pile up? Would you have even noticed a broken down car before ploughing into it?

I'm with your DH here. And I certainly wouldn't let you drive me anywhere other than round town.

Thejackrussellsrule · 02/06/2024 14:22

I've done this, like you say, you're listening to your music, foot down....

I now use my limiter a lot when I'm driving, especially in motorways, it also helps with fuel consumption unlike cruise control which is staying at a constant speed.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2024 14:49

@MonsteraMama at least own it. No one speeds that much by accident because they’re driving someone else’s car

If you're getting caught speeding every couple of years your observation skills really need some work.

blankittyblank · 02/06/2024 14:54

I did a speed awareness course a year ago, and it was great! I genuinely really enjoyed it, an learned a lot from it. So don't fear that either if you get one, they're really good!

MonsteraMama · 02/06/2024 15:23

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/06/2024 14:49

I did own it and that's literally exactly the reason I was speeding, I'm not sure what your expecting me to say "yes you're quite right, I was actually racing the BMW in the next lane"? Would you like to see my dash cam footage your honour?

My car is a 15 year old one litre and I'd have to have my foot on the floor and it would be rattling like it was about to explode at 83mph. I definitely couldn't get there accidentally.

My husband's is brand new and much more powerful, I'd never driven it before so was unfamiliar with it, and it's frighteningly easy to get up to very high speeds without noticing on a 46 mile stretch of nearly empty motorway. It felt like I was doing far less.
